Currently reading THE CRUEL DARK, the debut novel by Bea Northwick with my reading partner @planitchristina 🖤 The story follows Millicent, who is trying to forget her difficult past, seeking employment as the assistant to a broody professor who lives in a dilapidated estate in Boston in 1928. The household can not retain employees due to ghost stories and rumors swirling around the family, but Millicent's somewhat desperate situation leaves her little choice. Gothic romance with Jane Eyre and Northanger Abbey with spice. Great writing in old-fashioned language that feels authentic and carries the reader to another place in time. Historical and haunted.
"Anger at my foolishness made my voice viperous. "If it's your goal to make me so desperate I come begging for you, I swear I'll never do it!" My accusation hit a nerve, and he turned toward me, eyes dark with his own quickening fury.
"Do tell me again how you swear you never will," he growled."
