In the 1950s, Rolex and Pan American Airways partnered to create a watch that would make it possible to tell the time in two time zones at once.
With long-haul travel becoming more common, this was something pilots actually needed. And so the first GMT-Master was born in 1955 and featured a red and blue bicolor bezel to help aid in differentiating between day (red) and night (blue).
