Anastasiia Kunytska, call sign “Ingrid,” was a senior soldier with the Azov Special Purpose Brigade. Born in 1998 in the village of Urzuf near Mariupol, she found herself serving at home when she signed her contract - Urzuf was Azov’s main base.

Nastia had a boyfriend - fellow Azov fighter Vladyslav Oksenchuk, call sign “Desmond,” originally from Kovel in Volyn Oblast. A tall, handsome athlete once a master in track and field. Their paths crossed in 2019 when Nastia had already been serving for some time and Vlad was a fresh recruit. Their relationship spanned just over two years.

The full-scale Russian invasion caught the young couple in Mariupol. At Azovstal, Nastia and Vlad found themselves in separate bunkers, trying but failing to see each other. For that final month, those around them subsisted on almost no food - a plate of porridge and a small sausage piece had to last two days. Nastia wrote home, asking her family to send photos of food. “It makes me feel better,” she said.

When women were offered a chance to leave Azovstal, Nastia refused as long as Vlad remained. “I won’t go anywhere,” she stated.

Shortly before her death, Anastasiia sent a message to her lover’s sister: “They started shelling my position. If I’m gone, tell Vlad that I love him very much! And that he should help my mum in any way he can.”

Anastasiia Kunytska perished on the night of 2-3 May 2022 when an air raid struck Azovstal.

Vlad took his beloved’s death exceptionally hard. “I really want to go to Nastia. To be with her there forever. I’m not afraid to die, because she’ll be there...” he wrote to his sister.

Later, Vlad was captured by Russian forces and remains a prisoner of war.
