It was silent.
There was a transcendent serenity throughout the church until the words of the “Our Father…” pierced the air.
And as the words echoed off the cavernous ceilings of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral.
A cacophony of shrieks and screams erupted beyond the threshold of its towering wooden doors as protesters began their tirade.
They couldn’t have known.
But the timing was telling.
The two things eerily happened at precisely the same time.
It’s as if the protesters were reacting to something beyond their sight but not beyond the sense of their tortured souls.
It was truly as if there was a disturbance within their very being as the prayers of the many rose to the heavens, and Grace from on high rained over the concrete canyons of Lower Manhattan.
It was a moment that revealed a grave reality.
To mistake the problems plaguing the US as anything other than a full-on spiritual war for the soul of the Nation is to be blind to the truth
When the death of an unborn person is lauded and shouted as a great good, it becomes clear that the enemy has passed through the gates and is among us.
But Grace will prevail.
David defeated Goliath.
The walls of Jericho fell.
And death was defeated on the Cross.
What battles remain are fought knowing the war has already been won
And in the end
Love overcomes all hate.
Love triumphs over the death.
And Love will save us all.
