Robert Nugent @robertnugentartist with his work 'One of One' and 'Cerberus' in Luan Gallery Robert Nugent is an emerging multidisciplinary Irish artist working out of Westmeath. Studying in MTU, UCC and ATU in Fine Art and Education, he has particularly honed his skills in Drawing and Printing. Robert’s work is mainly concerned with contemporary iconography and graphic depictions of figures and objects. Working with drawing and painting, Robert depicts figures and objects that are somewhat autobiographical, drawing from his diverse interests and experiences. Mimi Seery @mimiseery with her work 'In Praise of Shadows,' 'I See You' and 'This Is Temporary' in Luan Gallery. Seery’s arts practice investigates social isolation caused by contemporary expectations on the individual and society. Recent public artworks address social issues such as anxieties about one's future, climate change and departure from trauma. Created with the intention of audience participation completing the work, her works are interactive, sensory, and site specific often using environmental elements at its chosen location as a material within the artworks. Ciara Tuite @cictuite with her work 'A Paradise Lost' in Luan Gallery Tuite is a visual artist and writer, originally from the Midlands, Ireland with a background in Journalism, Performing Arts and Fine Art. She has also travelled extensively and spent time amongst Aboriginal artists in Australia, Butoh dancers in Scandinavia and researching Refugee Camps in Palestine. This has resulted in a multidisciplinary approach to her practice. A month-long study of movement in Rishikesh, India deepened her interest in "body memory". The physical and emotional experience informs the current body of work; continuing to process human behaviour through colour, light and abstraction. The work is primarily in medium to large scale painting and is defined by bright tones and gestural brushstrokes. It focuses on the physicality of drawing and painting, coupled with the innate human instinct to mark-make. What a wonderful night of music and a great start to Christmas with the new Multi-Cultural choir formed in Moate. The members practiced tirelessly and in only 8 weeks, achieved their first concert which was a huge hit in the town. 🥳 The choir worked with our musician educator and Refugee and Asylum support group volunteers from 'New Horizon' to help weave a tapestry of culture within the local Irish Community. The choir consists of members from Ireland, Spain, Georgia, Ukraine, Somalia, Zimbabwe, Nigeria and Algeria. 🇮🇪🇪🇸🇬🇪🇺🇦🇸🇴🇿🇼🇳🇬🇩🇿 Our hosts, #tuarardartscentre were wonderful and provided ample rehearsal space and times and of course an intimate and inviting concert venue. Director Paul Hensey and members from Athlone Youth Orchestra provided accompaniment for the night and played some well know Christmas tunes after the show. 🎶 We also had the wonderful Carmel Whelan as our soloist, Niall Mannion on violin, tricia O'Meara on flute and Ailbhe Enraght-Mooney on piano. Westmeath Artists Support Award, is a collaboration between Luan Gallery and Westmeath Arts Office aiming to celebrate, showcase and support the development of Westmeath visual artists’ practices and careers and is supported by the Arts Council of Ireland. Luan Gallery invites submissions from artists living in or from Westmeath to submit 2D and 3D works for consideration of this Award and inclusion in a group exhibition which will take place in December 2023 and January 2024. The exhibition will present works from the county’s practicing visual artists selected by guest curator, Emer McGarry, Director of the Model Niland, Sligo. Each exhibiting artist will receive a stipend of €500. Additionally, each exhibiting artist will be considered for a professional development award which will be announced at the opening of the group exhibition in early December. Richard Clarke (@irishwoodcarving) is a carpenter from Mullingar, Co. Westmeath. He has been woodcarving for almost 20 years. "A carpenter/cabinet maker by trade, wood carving seemed a totally natural progression for me. I am mostly self-taught but have been lucky enough to have had tuition from Chris Pye the master woodcarver. My influences are mainly Celtic mythology and Irish folklore and fantasy literature such as Tolkien, Robert Jordan, Patrick Rothfuss and George R R Martin. Characters from Irish mythology and folklore offer me a wealth of amazing material to work with. The beauty of carving a mythological figure is that it comes with an enchanting story and a cultural aspect that people can connect with. “I’m a French self-taught multi-disciplinary artist living 11 years in Ireland. I’ve always loved making things and exploring new media ; I thought for a long time I would never feel legitimate in my art if I didn’t pick one medium and stick to it, but I’ve discovered variety makes me much happier and more creative. So far, I've mostly worked with paint, plaster, clay, photos, textile and found objects, with a deep interest in texture and colours. My work is pretty eclectic in terms of style and subjects: it can be playful or nostalgic, silly or profound. Using items from my familial home of 5 generations, these items have been inherited, gifted, or acquired. The cut-outs are sourced from books from my collection together with discarded magazines and periodicals. I cut out and arrange the pieces to my satisfaction creating commentary and narrative; other pieces are just arranged aesthetically. “My inspiration and creativity come from walking and exploring the landscape. Sketchbook in hand, I am taken by the natural world around me, observing and absorbing the colours and textures through Inks, pastels, and graphite pencil. This process is essential to capturing something both spontaneous and yet intentional through expressions of mark making to catch the mood of the landscape in the moment. […] I aim to create slightly abstract landscapes using oils and mixed media, evoking the raw energy and spirit of a landscape. This dynamic, ever changing, keeps me inspired to grow as an artist. I would best describe my painting style as impressionistic and gestural. I enjoy the process of making through building layers with paint, palette knives, brushes, fingers, to scratch into the surface, working back and forth between layers, adding, subtracting, until the desired result is achieved. I am currently exploring the process of Japanese Ink painting known as Sumi-e. I’m interested in creating polarities within my work; the contrast between light and dark, the heaviness of the ink and the subtle tones that are created when it’s diluted and mastering its unpredictability. Thanks to the Luan Gallery for having me on board! Aishling Muller (@lifeschanginglandscape) and her video “100 Seconds To Midnight”, January 2023. Aishling creates expanded narratives documenting times of transition and transformation both in her inner and outer world. She is inspired by nature's rhythm, death, rebirth, and the organic flow she finds in her constantly changing world, and creative process. Drawn to working within the purity of the natural environment, she documents those lands in the process of change by the hand of man, nature and in more recent times climate. "My creativity is generally a reflection of experience in much the same way as dreams are a reflection of the unconscious. My early work drew from sources of mysticism, symbolism, and psychology, at a time of self-discovery and introspection. My later work is an exploration of culture, identity, and the human spirit. While the technical revolution of recent years and the emergence of conceptual art have given us new approaches to creative expression and art forms, I am inclined to think that painting is essentially outside and independent of these developments and remains on a trajectory that is as ancient as humanity. "My work reflects the love I have of local scenery, I walk a lot and find the local river and lake scenes provide infinite inspiration. I collect mental images from walking around the rivers and lakes of Westmeath. I paint mostly in Acrylic which allows me to make numerous changes and build up body in a painting. I use a pen and scrape into the surface to convey the texture I want to show. I take few photos, preferring to work from mental images which convey the emotion I get from a scene. I love using colour and used it to emphasize what someone who is outside the loop feels when looking in. My paintings are an emotional response to what I have seen. I am always interested in how I can use nature to tell stories as well as process and express my emotional response to life events. Taking inspiration from nature and most specifically trees, I have developed this series of paintings following a recent Haiku writing course. Teresa graduated with a degree in Fine Art from Limerick School of Art & Design in the 1980's. After a decade of living in New York in the 1990s, Teresa returned to Ireland and has since lived in North Westmeath with her family. Peter is a contemporary figurative painter. He recently graduated from Atlantic Technological University, Sligo in with a BA in Fine Art. Martina Coyle (@martina_coyle_artist) is a Westmeath-based multi-disciplinary artist whose practice is made up of three inter-related strands; studio-based artwork/ installation, public artwork and art education. Martina has exhibited extensively in Ireland and France, where she lived for many years. Her work utilises diverse mediums and modes of fabrication including photography, drawing, video, sculpture, installation, sound and light. Congratulations to the overall winner of the Westmeath Artist’s Awards, Olena Karpenko. Olena is an artist from Ukraine, living in Athlone. “Karpenko’s work is abstract, playing with layers, colour and forms, with over-layers of colour washes, made with acrylic and mixed media on paper. Her interests are in abstraction, and strongly references her passion for abstract expressionism. The works selected are from a series titled Terra Patera which is a reflection on the war in her home country of Ukraine.
