The Crazy Gang was de meest passende bijnaam die een voetbalteam misschien ooit wel kreeg. Het team van Wimbledon FC stond bekend als kneiterhard en helemaal losgeslagen. Dat was ook niet zo vreemd met spelers als Vinnie Jones (foto), Dennis Wise, Dave Beasant en John Fashanu. Nieuw in ons assortiment is dit prachtige retro voetbalshirt van The Dons uit de jaren '90, de tijd waarin de club helaas bijna ophield met bestaan. De eigenaren bedachten dat het een goed plan was om de club te verhuizen naar Milton Keynes, het Lelystad van Engeland. Maar inmiddels heeft het een doorstart gemaakt als AFC Wimbledon en is het terug in Zuid-Londen. Waar het hoort! Sport is just so stupid. Honestly; why do the fortunes of a group of people dressed in synchronised colour patterns (usually on the other side of the world) have such a huge impact on my happiness. I’m reminded of a section of Nick Hornby’s Fever Pitch where he scoffs at people who think supporting a team is enjoyable. It is not enjoyable, it is a curse, it’s torture. Price we pay for foolish tribalism. I took a keen interest in football in Wimbledon long before I moved to the UK. I loved how they made overturning the conventional logic of British Football a trademark, a tradition. They should not have existed in the first place; much less rise to the top league, win the FA Cup, become a founding member of the Premiership, and most importantly, revive and re-establish themselves after literally having everything taken away from them. Overnight AFC Wimbledon were relegated; just as they were in 1980, 1982 and 2000. I hate football. Stupid, quirky, low scoring European sport full of divers, egomaniacs and human rights violators. I’m so very down right now, as all Wombles are. Undoubtedly the worst team in the division this year, if not all of football; 27 games without a win and counting, winless this year and it’s May. Only 6 wins all season. We have to work very hard to not be another Southend, Oldham or Notts County. Things are quite bad, worst I’ve ever known. But this has to be viewed in it’s full context, from a high level. This is a blip, a speedbump. This is one in 132 years of proud history. Overturning conventional football logic is what we do, and it will take hard work, but we will do it again. We have a home now everyone told us we could never have. The Crazy Gang. La favola del Wimbledon che trionfò nell'FA Cup 1988, sconfiggendo a Wembley i ben più quotati rivali del Liverpool. Un trionfo in cui nessuno credeva, quello dei Dons, la squadra di calcio più cattiva degli anni 80, composta da elementi sprovvisti del ben che minimo timore reverenziale. Il merito di questo gruppo di pazzi, come li definivano in Inghilterra, non era dettato da rivoluzionarie invenzioni tattiche, ne da doti tecniche eccelse, tutt'altro. Quel Wimbledon era privo di grandi giocatori. Aveva tuttavia una caratteristica che lo rendeva unico: faceva paura. Nessuno voleva affrontare quegli undici pazzi. Dave Beasant, Eric Young, John Fashanu, Dennis Wise e Vinnie Jones erano gli uomini simbolo. Beasant era capitano e portiere, soprannominato Lerch per la stazza che ricordava il maggiordomo della famiglia Addams, Young era leader difensivo, soprannominato Ninja per le sue entrate kamikaze e la fascia che portava sempre sulla fronte, poi c'era Fashanu, attaccante granitico temuto da tutte le difese protagonista di entrate al limite del codice penale pur di recuperare palla e cercare il gol. A completare il pacchetto la coppia di centrocampo composta da Wise e Jones, sul primo Sir Alex Ferguson fu molto riassuntivo: "Wise potrebbe scatenare una rissa in una stanza vuota", sul secondo invece gli aneddoti si sprecano. Per Vinnie Jones giocare a calcio era come andare in guerra, la palla era come il Santo Graal e per cercare di conquistarla ogni mezzo era lecito. E quella finale col Liverpool fu proprio una guerra, nella quale i Dons trovarono il vantaggio nel primo tempo, difeso strenuamente fino al 90°, con Beasant che divenne eroe parando un rigore ad Aldridge. Il resto è storia, scolpita nella memoria dalla voce di John Motson, storico telecronista della BBC. «The Crazy Gang have beaten the Culture Club!». Da quel giorno, quegli undici pazzi, saranno ricordati per un trofeo, il più ambito d'Inghilterra, e non più solo per i lividi lasciati sugli avversari.
