Kingdom Hearts (Playstation 2) Rating: 6.5/10 Swipe right for full review! I remember back when I was still in middle school, someone painted a big mural of this game on the wall of the school as part of an art project. Ever since then I wished I could play it. It's such a bizarre concept, and even 20 years later it still feels pretty goofy. But I can't deny it's a really fun game. Presentation and action scenes are definitely a highlight, and I won't deny that I felt a great rush of nostalgia for all these Disney properties that I was so familiar with when the game actually released. Basically everyone knows the story is nonsense and maybe it gets better from here, but regardless it hardly weighs the game down to the point where it becomes boring, outside of a few key instances. Rating Revisions, April 2024 Like most people, my opinions change over time or when I'm exposed to something new. So after a while, I thought it might be a good idea to revisit some of my previously played games that I might have grown more or less fond of over time. So here we are! Pilotwings 64: 3/10 -> 3.5/10 I can't deny that this game is frustrating to play but I can't help but like it regardless. It's really unique and a product of its time, and I respect it for that. Diddy Kong Racing: 8/10 -> 8.5/10 The more racing games I play the more I appreciate this one, particularly its single player mode. Really fun and I think we need more like it. Stardew Valley: 8/10 -> 9/10 I played one single non-Stardew farming sim and that was enough to convince me this game is in a league of its own. We truly are blessed. Croc: Legend of the Gobbos: 5.5/10 -> 5/10 Probably too much nostalgia for me. I love it but I can't deny its flaws. Yugioh: The Duelist of the Roses: 5.5/10 -> 5/10 Basically same as above. New games for the month! (April 2024) March was a bit of a hectic month, but I was able to finish up all the games I bought a few months ago, so of course that means it's time for some new ones! This set will represent my foray into a couple of iconic RPG series with Suikoden and Trails. Dead Space will hopefully give me some of that enjoyable fear that Silent Hill did, SOCOM I just picked up because I remember my brother had it has a kid, and System Shock is the basis for the Bioshock series which I've enjoyed in the past. As far as indies go, Chants of Sennaar was one of my friend's favorite game of 2023, and I've heard great things about it! And as I was at PAX East last week, I was able to pick up Tunic from @fangamercom . Mario Party Superstars (Nintendo Switch) Rating: 5/10 Swipe right for full review! A lot of people call Superstars a return to form for the Mario Party series, and I think that just kind of shows how bad it was for a while. I was unfortunate enough to not have the experience to play this game as truly intended, as the user-created levels have all been wiped with the servers going offline a few years ago. Vagrant Story (Playstation) Rating: 5/10 Swipe right for full review! One of the more disappointing aspects of playing new games that we have to get used to is that not every cult classic hidden gem is going to become one of your favorites. Vagrant Story certainly fits the bill for me. I think the combat system of this game is, as frequently pointed out, quite ingenious, and it's a really interesting and novel take on the RPG. But there's only so much page turning and menuing I can stand! I'd even argue the main gameplay here is actually taking place in the menus; the actual combat (i.e. timed button presses) is pretty elementary once you have the right setup. And the story is kinda all over the place and not really that easy to follow, either. Celeste 64: Fragments of the Mountain (PC) No Rating Swipe right for full review! Probably one of the only games I'll willingly omit a rating on, as it was made in about a week and there's no reason to believe that any of it's potential flaws wouldn't be addressed with more time. That being said, I found this to be a charming little title and made for a fun evening. Celeste is obviously a game that is very near and dear to my heart so this was a no brainer to check out, and I have to say I enjoyed it even beyond it's function as an random side project. Heck, there are many games that I've enjoyed less than this, which is certainly a testament to the EXOK team. Inscryption (Nintendo Switch) Rating: 6.5/10 If this game was 3 hours long, it would be one of the best I've ever played. As it stands, it's pretty good. It's good to know when to quit when you're ahead, and Inscryption certainly doesn't. It's such a hard game to recommend because, sure, the beginning is incredible and basically everyone who's played it loves it. I think it's something everyone should play if they even have the slight bit of interest. One of the most creative games I've ever played, in every positive and negative meaning of the word. Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Nintendo 3DS) Rating: 8.5/10 Swipe right for full review! New Leaf was my introduction to the series and is, I think, the peak of modern Animal Crossing. Even with the NH update, this game probably still has the most content and the most bang for your buck of the entire series, and I think it's relatively limited town customization aspects give it a lot of character in a way. Least Favorites Of 2023 The 5 games I enjoyed the least this year, for one reason or another. #1: Crusi'n Exotica - The only reason I own this was because it came with the N64 that my friend traded me. Not good nor would I have ever expected it to be. #2: Tomb Raider - The biggest disappointment of the year by far. I didn't like the controls, the story, puzzles; it was either frustrating or boring for the majority of my time sadly. #3: Kirby: Canvas Curse - Probably not the best intro to the Kirby series. The stylus only controls are a product of their time, but haven't aged too well. #4: Pac-Man World 2 - This pains me to say, as I loved this game as a kid. Music is exceptional. Some levels are good. Everything else is sadly mediocre. #5: Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon - The mission system and the constant interruptions made its difficult to enjoy exploring in this one as much as its sequel. Favorite Games Played In 2023 These are my top 5 games that I've played this year! It's been a really good year for discovering classics and (relatively) new games alike! #1: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - The only 2023 game I played this year and suffice it to say, it lived up to expectations and then some. A masterpiece. #2: The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening - It's a Zelda sweep with one of the best remakes I've ever played. Link's Awakening is a brilliant title with perhaps the best story in the series. #3: Chrono Trigger - Consistently hailed as one of the best games ever made, and it's not hard to see why. Extremely memorable characters and music, a great multilayered story, and those endings... incredible! #4: Night In The Woods - I'll admit I was enthralled by its art from the first minute. What I didn't know was that there was a profound and moving story to go along with it. A wonderfully empathetic experience. #5: The Last Of Us: Beat out quite a few contenders, but it held on to that number 5 spot with one of the finest examples of cinematic storytelling in a video gam If you've played any of these games, let me know what you think! 2023 Year In Review! Here's all the games I was able to finish this year. As I've mentioned several times before, by finishing all these games, I managed to defeat my physical backlog! It was my hope I could do so this year and I'm glad I was able to reach it! It will make going into 2024 feel really fresh and new as a result. This is by far the most games I've ever played in one year and I doubt I'll ever be able to reach numbers like this again! I played and beat 29 games and wrote 32 reviews (3 coming from old PC games I hadn't considered last year.) Persona 5 (Playstation 3) Rating: 10/10 Swipe right for full review! As a celebration for me clearing my backlog recently, I've decided to post another of my favorite games. I played this one in December 2019 and to this day I don't think any game before or since has had me so thoroughly absorbed. If there was a word to describe P5, it would be captivating; I didn't know games could be this addicting and fulfilling. At the time of playing I was absolutely not the target audience; I heavily leaned towards platformers and the like, so for this game to blow me away as much as it did is a surefire certification of its quality. I beat it in about a month and it felt like a blur and a lifetime all at once. There's simply too much to like about this game for it to be called anything less than a 10 in my book, and it's always going to be one of those games I think about in the holiday season. This is another one from the childhood game collection, I remember when I got it I was sad that it wasn't SSX Tricky, which a friend of mine had. Professor Layton & The Miracle Mask (Nintendo 3DS) Rating: 6/10 Swipe right for full review! This was probably a weird place for me to start off with the Layton series, being the 2nd game in the 2nd trilogy, but for all that it's worth, I still enjoyed it. I was really impressed by the puzzle variety here, and there weren't too many that were not interesting and well-communicated. The story is pretty mediocre, even if the characters are fun, but it's the latter half of the game where it really starts to drag, ironically, when it abandons its typical gameplay loop. The Witness (PC) Rating: 4.5/10 I decided it would be doing an injustice to my experience as a gaming enthusiast if I only stuck to games I could get physical copies of. So while I will obviously go for them if they exist, I don't want to exclude all the great PC or digital only games out there. The Witness is sadly not one of those games, but it will be my first PC only review. This game is actually surprisingly fun for its limited gameplay, and feels like it could have been great if it just committed strictly to good, streamlined puzzle design instead of presenting itself as (what I feel like was) overly pretentious and intentionally obscure. Red Dead was a fine game for me and I'd heard great things about it but it didn't feel like anything too special. I suspect this is a bit of a "you had to be there" kind of thing, when this was the pinnacle of video game technology. Or it's just not my thing! As Halloween is fast approaching, I thought it would be appropriate to finish the games I played a few years back with this one. I'm currently playing the Luigi's Mansion series in reverse order it seems, as this was my first, and I found it pretty fun! I think a game like this could have benefited from being a little shorter so it could really jam pack its ideas, but I still enjoyed this one, and I like the unique settings of the hotel's different floors. Some were great and some were not so great but the variety was very much appreciated and kept the entertainment factor up for most of the game. This was a lot of people's introduction to the series (myself included of course) and I see a lot of positives for the future! The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time (Nintendo 64 & Nintendo 3DS) Rating: 9.5/10 Swipe right for full review! Ocarina of Time is one of the most influential and impressive games ever made, of this there shouldn't be much debate. Just as ALTTP did on the SNES, this game set the precedent for 3D Zelda titles for decades following its release. All this context I was sort of aware of when I first played it, but it many ways I was just playing it as another game. It was my second Zelda game after picking up Breath of the Wild, and while that game inspired me to try the series out, Ocarina was the one that sold me on the classic Zelda formula. So many games don't get made if this one didn't come out first. When a game is this well crafted and feels this alive, and has as much content for single player as it does multiplayer, you know you're in for a good time. I actually remember playing this at a friend's house YEARS ago thinking it was Mario Kart, then later not realizing why I couldn't find the Icicle Pyramid in the MK64 battle mode. The single player kart racer is something that has become a bit rare with the increasing presence of online play, and I think that's a shame, because innovative titles like this offered so much for all types of play styles. Pokèmon Moon (Nintendo 3DS) Rating; 3/10 Swipe right for full review! Well, I didn't like this game. I think this might be the biggest waste of potential in all the mainline games (that is, up to gen 7, I haven't played any of the Switch titles yet.) It's such a unique concept! The Pokèmon designs are actually incredible! Totem Pokèmon are a cool idea! But I find it hard to be excited about all these things while in game because of its linearity and extremely sluggish pace. I mean, get rid of Rotom-Dex and this is already a significantly better game. Are these issues fixed in USUM? I certainly hope so.
