I'm William 😁 and this is how I became the Dyslexic Coach! Started back in the 1st grade when they shuffled me into a room to read a piece of paper. They then called me dyslexic! I struggled in all areas but mostly in speaking and reading. Taking extra time to take tests, friends thinking I was contagious, being separated from my friends in English and writing classes, and being picked on thinking I was stupider than the average person. All in the life of a kid dyslexic. Through elementary, middle, high school, and into college, I felt this challenge was an eternal hardship I would have to face. Then I simple desired my life to be better. I told myself to do stuff I loved, and I did. I told myself to push past what I could do before, and I did. Then I told myself I could read more!! And I didn't! It took me several years before I could get the courage to try something different. For someone who read maybe 1 boon a year, I knew 12 was "ish" duable. But over that year. I READ 12, that lead to 40, that finished on 50 books. A life changing moment as I now love to read. I spoke quietly for many years. People called me shy, introverted, and a little average. But as I began to share cool insights I was learning with people, I built more confidence and loved to teach. After 15 years of speaking difficulty, I practice daily to become a international speaker. Knowing now that dyslexia hasn't brought me a bad life but a unique one, I embrace it. I graduated college, became a best selling author, a husband and father to a wonderful wife and 3 girls, AND as I want to help other dyslexics not feel the same pain I had to go through, I chose to share my strategies with them. It honestly doesn’t feel real still, but I’m thrilled it is 😭 I don’t think I could survive another semester 💀 I’m so so grateful for all the support from friends and family. Officially a Bachelor! I graduated as a first generation student with no student debt and received a Bachelors Degree in University Studies and a minor in Computer Science and a Programmer Certificate of Completion! Y'all my heart is so full. I feel so lucky to be loved and supported by so many amazing people! I got to stand in line with these awesome people from my history thesis writing class, which made it way more fun. I hand painted some simple graduation announcements and mailed some out. I peyote stitched my eagle feather and hand beaded my cap and they were perfect. I got so many compliments on it. I got phone calls and texts all the best people. I know I mentioned in another post I got teary eyed yesterday seeing my mentor Hopi uncle Ken, he also came to my ceremony today and saw me cross the stage. And gifted me this incredibly beautiful @eighthgeneration blanket. 😭😭😭 When I say I wouldn't be here without him, Even though he retired 5ish years ago, I mean it. This man did everything he could for me to help me graduate short of doing my homework. He encouraged me, he let me vent, he let me cry. He celebrated every win and good grade and helped me plan when I didn't pass a class (which was a LOT). He helped find me scholarship money when my GPA was probably not high enough to qualify. He let me guest lecture in his Into to American Indian Studies class on Southern Plains & Oklahoma native tribes and get a taste of what I didn't realize I wanted to do when I grew up. I knew him tangentially when he worked at BYU when I was there, but he became my friend when I transferred to UVU. He's not on social media so I can brag about him. I would not have completed nearly as many classes before I came back without his guidance and support. And it meant so much to have him here today and even better to catch up after over a really long lunch lol Overcoming this hurdle, getting this degree some 27 years after I started, 2 universities, 1 associates degree and many changes in majors later and I can say I don't think I would have changed anything about my journey. Every trial and triumph have made me who I am. And I can't wait to see where it takes me. Thank you all for all your support over the years, too. I don’t believe in non-believers 💚🎓💥 - this track brings me back to a very specific moment in time. I remember hearing it for the first time ever; leaning against the outside of a public library window, sitting in a flower bed on my broken android phone; I didn’t have data, or a home to go to - There have been a few bouts of homelessness along this journey; I know that I flex my Supreme all the time but I have lived in my 89’ Honda civic before, and definitely slept under it too!! - ANYWAY, my life changed when I decided to move to Utah in 2019, as well as cut alcohol out of my life!!! I decided to go back & get this degree about 2 years ago, and now I am approaching 1000 days alcohol free in a few days - I also earned this Bachelor’s Degree with Honors Cum Laude - 3.63gpa - it has been a lifelong struggle for me to be successful with my grades, but we finished strong, and that meant the world to me. So many thoughts I want to share. 🎓 CLASS OF 2024 🎓 My educational journey has been anything but conventional but i wouldn’t have it any other way. The last seven and a half years have been some of the most difficult, exhausting, broadening and humbling years of my life. When i promised myself at 16 that i would graduate from college debt free, i didn’t understand fully what and how much work i would have to put in to achieve it. Being a full time student while working full time while juggling every other aspect of my life was anything but easy but it was worth every minute that got me to this point. I put my blood, sweat and tears into this and even through all the sleepless and tear filled semesters or breaks to save money i never forgot that promise to myself. It is with immense pride, gratitude, relief and joy that i walked across that stage today. Thank you to all those that made this journey with me, supported me, encouraged me, cried with me and celebrated every win. I wouldn’t have made it across this finish line without you. I have officially completed my associates degree in art and design and have graduated from UVU! I may only have an associates degree, but it represents a lot more struggle than a typical 2 year degree. The last 4 years have been life changing as I have learned and grown as an artist, battled nearly life-ending illnesses, and lost my niece. I’m very excited to continue on to my bachelors degree. . . Speaking of which, I will be moving to Chicago in 2 months to continue my education at School of the Art Institute of Chicago after receiving a generous scholarship. SUMMARY: whether you believe you can or you can’t, you’re right, so i went ahead and got a bs in public health and a certification in health and wellness coaching ;) my senior year of high school my english teacher made it a point to try to get it through my thick skull that i will never graduate college without student debt. even after postponing my graduation for a year and a half (i should’ve earned my 4 year degree in 2.5 yrs, but i got free school so i took my time and tried many many majors, minors, and certifications) i actually ended up with more scholarship money than i needed for school, which is part of why i have my fabulous fabiola (my car) so basically, suck it mrs. ******🥰turns out merit based scholarships do pay well🤷🏻♀️ i also ended up with a 3.9 gpa after this semester’s grades, so although my medal is that of a magna cum laude graduate, i actually graduated summa cum laude!! college was HARD!!!!! just about all of the worst things to happen in my personal life happened in my first 3 years at college, but nevertheless, i persisted and i cannot believe the amount of pride i feel in myself for the first time in my life!!!! i feel like this is the first thing i’ve truly accomplished purely for myself and i could not be more stoked. i had a lot of support and love and help along the way from near and far and i couldn’t have done it without so many people helping me through it all, so thank you all🫶 PROUD TO BE A UVU ALUMNI💚🖤🤍 #UVUGRAD 📸: @annierandallphoto

I'M A COLLEGE GRADUATE!!! I now have a Bachelors of Science in Art and Design with a (not official) emphasis in printmaking. I've thought about what I wanted to say for this post for years. I remember walking on campus looking at the buildings towering over me thinking when will the end come. Now I'm here and I have all the feels 🥴. I never thought I was going to attend college. But with a helpful scholarship, I was able to go to SLCC for a year. I was not a fan (though I learned some very valuable life lessons) and thought school wasn't for me and took a two year break to decide what I wanted to do with my life. At the end of those two years, randomly, UVU came to mind and I couldn't shake the feeling. Like I needed to be there. It had been a dream of mine to be a student at the university. So in the fall of 2018, I started my long 6 year journey through many late nights, ridiculous required classes, and many times wanting to quit. But I am not a quitter. So, I got back on the saddle and kept marching on until today. 127 credits, an internship, and a whole lot of knowledge later, I made it. The place where I found my love for linocuts and made so many friends along the way. I'm SO excited to see where life takes me and what I will achieve. I will of course keep posting my art and keep creating. It's what I love to do. As for right now, I'm taking a well needed break and having some me time to recharge before my next adventure begins. . . #uvugrad #graduate #missionaccomplished✔️

I am so crazy proud & thankful for Douglas! Graduating college is impressive alone, but he not only did school full time, he also was working full time throughout college. There were lots of delays along the way, but I finally finished my degree! I loved being a student at UVU. Thanks for all the support from friends, faculty, and family! (PS grateful the convocation was live streamed for my family who were sick at home! I got to say hi to my 6 year old nephew as I walked past the camera.
