Exactly a year since his Sydney Opera House forecourt show, last night I saw Tim Minchin live at Sydney's State Theatre. Through luck in possibly one of the best seats in the house, I witnessed Tim's phenomal, dramatic and beautiful piano-playing up close, and could see each expression, emotion and posture of his performance. A truly special experience, and surreal, even though I've seen Tim live a few times. There was a photo ban, so despite every fibre of my stupid smartphone-owning being wanting to sneak a photo, I didn't, not even one. As Trent Dalton reminded me to, I took in as many details of the moment as possible. But in case I forget, and in case anyone out there cares, for this post I stole one of Tim's insta pics, and a much older one from the interweb, similar to my view last night. There was something different about last night's show - it took me a while to work it out - it was the first time I've seen Tim wearing shoes on stage! ❤️ LET’S FALL APART TOGETHER! ❤️ Absolutely buzzing this evening, @basil_croutons and I were extraordinarily lucky to see the mighty @timminchin in a small-ish room, local to us. It was a rare non-comedy gig, just him and a piano, with heartfelt ramblings and songs. And the first gig I’ve been to in years where everyone respected the ‘no phones, no photos’ rule. So no photos, sorry. Not even the usual ‘empty piano under a moody blue light’ thang. One thing that really struck a chord was his observation that when people get married, they’re really saying “We commit to watching each other decay.” …and, as a humanist, that was one of the most beautifully real and romantic things I have ever heard. 🥰 Remember, inspo for your wedding vows and readings can come from ANYWHERE!
