A couple of nice snook on fly for Bryan and his buddy. Both of them got their 1st Snook ever plus Jacks and Moonfish. We even fed a couple Tarpon but couldn’t get one to stick. The highlight of night 2 with Jake was this nice Jack Crevalle on fly. It definitely gave him a run for his money and took over 20 min. to bring in. Jacks fight super hard for their size and never give up usually heading for the current. Super fun fish that aggressively attack the fly. Conditions are changing to springtime but there are still plenty of Jacks around. Plus, fishing is only getting better and better. Jake got his 1st Tarpon on fly! He made it happen with only one eat the whole night. The hook stuck in the right spot and he maintained even and consistent pressure despite the fish going absolutely bonkers right next to the boat. 36” Snook on the 5wt!! Hands down the best Snook on fly I’ve ever caught topping my #personalbest . This fish was sight fished with an epic eat and light tension pulling her away from the groves. In the process of taking pictures, I went overboard, falling into the push pole snapping it. Somehow, I still managed to come up with the fish and an intact fly rod. With some Jerry rigging and ingenuity we managed to repair the push pole enough to make it work for the remaining 4 days. This Snook was the first fish caught on our 4-day camping trip deep in the Everglades backcountry. We did an amazing devotional right before (Luke ch. 5) about when Jesus first met his disciples. One of the greatest fishing stories of all time, he filled their nets with soo many fish it almost sank the boat! This miracle turned them into fishers of men. It’s just amazing how God works and how He gave us our own fishing story to bring us closer to Him. It was a pleasure taking @mattbourie out for a fly fishing adventure in the Everglades. We got off to a great start catching Snook, Redfish and Tripletail plus Jacks, Ladyfish and even a Moonfish. He also jumped a Tarpon. The second part of the day was spent pursuing the elusive Florida Bay Bonefish. Dave caught the big fish of the trip with this ~30lb Goliath Grouper. Pretty crazy fight as we were in tight quarters and the fish got into the mangroves but somehow worked it’s way back out. This was a very special Snook for me. Absolutely beautiful with a rare golden hue and a personal best for me in the park on fly at 30”. Tucked up in a hole in the mangroves where a perfect presentation yielded an incredible eat. This fish made several hard runs trying to take me into the groves but I was able to turn its head at the last second each time. The most important part was we decided to release this fish even though legally we could’ve kept it. It just didn’t feel right harvesting a fish after the red tide fish kills in the gulf. An epic night with an epic bite. Gio came out again, this time for a birthday docklight trip and ended up catching double slams. Tarpon, Snook and big Jacks all on fly. There were also several Tarpon fed and jumped, plus several Snook missed as he got dialed in. It honestly doesn’t get any better than this and will be a difficult trip for Gio to top next time.
