Today we recognized Investigator Josh Bowman for an outstanding law enforcement career. Bowman will “hang up the belt” and sign off for the last time. He has successfully completed a 23 year law enforcement career, spending his last 18+ years here in the Town of Gates. Inv. Bowman started his career in the Southern Tier where he grew up working for the Addison Police Department and Chemung County Sheriffs Office. While serving with Addison PD, Inv. Bowman was called to help in New York City after the tragic events of 9/11. Bowman did not waiver and spent multiple days in Manhattan doing search and recovery. When life brought Josh to Monroe County he was hired by the Gates Police Department. Once at Gates PD he spent a short amount of time as member of the Road Patrol Division before being promoted to Investigator. During his tenure as an investigator Bowman worked on and solved many major incidents here in Gates. Although not from the area Bowman was not a stranger to community events, fundraisers and even participated in (12) Law Enforcement Unity Tours, riding a bike 350+ miles from New Jersey to Washington D.C. to raise money for fallen police officer families. At last nights town board meeting surrounded by family, co-workers and an almost packed house full of residents we celebrated the promotion of Sergeant Chris Grimm to the Rank of Lieutenant. Lieutenant Grimm will begin training and take over the responsibilities of the Road Patrol Commander later this month. Lt. Grimm will be in charge of the day to day road patrol operations to include overall supervision of all 3 road patrol shifts, special details / assignments and many other road patrol related functions. Lt. Grimm started with the Gates Police Department as an Officer in 2009 after graduating from Roberts Wesleyan College. During his tenure at Roberts, LT. Grimm was a Gates Police intern and member of our volunteer Special Police Unit. Lt Grimm was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2014 and was the supervisor in charge of the overnight shift for 5 years before coming to the day shift the last 4 years. On Thursday members of the Police Department celebrated the career of K9 Sonny who will be retiring at the end of his shift today. Officer Miller was assigned as K9 Sonny’s handler and partner. Officer Miller was presented with a plaque from his Monroe County K9 training partners, Crime Stoppers K9 Group and from the Town of Gates. K9 Sonny was named by Officer Miller after the late Officer Sonny Chung of the Gates Police Department who passed away after an accident on Ridge Road. K9 Sonny has been with Officer Miller over the last 5 1/2 years through thick and thin. Most recently the pair were assigned to the day patrol shift and made many appearances at school events, Campaign D events, town events and many more. We would like to thank Wegmans, Crime Stoppers K9 Fund, Country Max and Chili Animal Care for all their help and support with K9 Sonny! American Legion Doud Post chapter 98 held its annual Christmas luncheon today. Last night at the Gates Town Board meeting Officer Nicholas Ventrella was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Sergeant Ventrella is a life long Gates resident, graduate of Spencerport High School and 7 year Gates Police employee. Recently Sergeant Ventrella spent a year as an acting Sergeant when one of our overnight Sergeants was out injured. We also swore in a new Special Police candidate, Nicholas Taroni. Today the Gates Fire District held their annual medal day were they recognize the efforts of their staff and others in the public safety community. Gates Police Officers Burke and Ventrella received recognition for their response to a medical call where they were able to render aid and assistance. The officers worked hand and hand with Fire and EMS in extricating a patient out of a confined space. We appreciate the efforts of all of our first responders. Today we remembered Officer Sonny Chung with a memorial softball game. Gates Fire, Gates EMS, Gates PD and the spouses team all competed in a charity game to benefit the Concerns of Police Survivors. After some horrible umpiring by none other than Retired Officer Lance Duffy the fire department pulled out a victory in the championship game verse the PD. On Monday night, at the Gates Town Board meeting, Supervisor Giunta and the members of the Town Board confirmed 3 promotions for the Gates Police Department. Lieutenant Robert Long was sworn into the position of Chief due to the retirement of Chief VanBrederode. Chief Long is a 17 year member of the Gates Police Department. Sergeant Matthew Pascarella was sworn into the position of Lieutenant assigned to the Road Patrol Division. Lt. Pascarella is a 17 year member of the Gates Police Department. Lt. Pascarella most recently served on the day shift in his Sergeants capacity. Officer Arnold Frost was sworn into the position of Sergeant and was assigned to the afternoon shift. Sgt. Frost is a 9 year member of the Gates Police Department. Officer Frost recently spent 1 month on the day shift but has been a career long afternoon shift member. Gates Police and the Gates Police Keystone club helped Gates resident Van Stanley this morning give out a few gifts and salon treatments to victims of domestic violence. Van and friends organized this event to give back! Members of the Monroe County Sheriffs office and Rochester Police Department also stopped by to spread some love. After 37 years in Law Enforcement (34 with Gates Police and 3 years with RPD), Chief VanBrederode will be retiring by the end of the week as the Gates Police Chief. The Chief was appointed to his position in June 2013. Lt. Robert Long, a 17 year veteran, lifelong resident of Gates – Chili, will be the Acting Chief until February 7th at which time he will be appointed as the next Gates Police Chief at the Town Board meeting. Lt. Long has worked under Chief VanBrederode; he understands Community Policing and the concerns of the Gates Community. He presently serves as a School Board Member for the Gates Chili School District. He has a young family and is a former volunteer fire fighter. He will serve the Gates Police Department well. Gates Police this past week joined our partners in crime with a Project Exile Tips cook out on Pennsylvania Ave...scene of the unsolved double murder Mass shooting back in September 2020. We surveyed local residents on the street to get their input on the safety of their neighborhood! Councilman Cordero joined us today.
