Credit to @theoaklandside Art & Soul, the weekend music and art festival that has drawn tens of thousands of attendees and become a yearly staple since 2001, is canceled this year, and its future is uncertain, organizers announced Friday. Last December, the City Council awarded $1.3 million to Oakland-based arts and culture organizations for events and programming. $947,000 came from the city’s general fund and $380,000 from the hotel tax. Art & Soul was among the grantees set to receive funding in March. However, according to Samee Roberts, the festival’s executive director, the city is late issuing funds. “I was told that it could be several months before we get our funding,” Roberts said. That delay makes paying for the festival impossible. Art & Soul started as a multi-day cultural affair and for years was supported by a $150,000 city grant, but organizers were forced to put the festival on hiatus in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. In 2022, it returned as a one-day festival, but the city cut its support back to $20,000. Over the past two years, festival organizers have planned to use the city’s $20,000 contribution to pay bills for the previous year’s festival. The current funding delay makes it impossible for Art & Soul to square away all of its debt for the 2023 event, which had a total budget of $110,000. The 1.2 acres of city property on Foothill Boulevard and 73rd Avenue is the current site of Liberation Park, a community hub created by the Black Cultural Zone Collaborative. @blackculturalzone, a community development corporation focused on furthering economic opportunities and preserving Black culture in East Oakland, is also leading the proposed development project, along with Eden Housing and the Community Arts Stabilization Trust. A committee of the Oakland City Council gave an initial stamp of approval to the land deal Tuesday afternoon, voting to send it up to the full council for a final decision Feb. 20. Councilmember Carroll Fife called the transfer of the property—part lease, part sale—“reparations” for historic disinvestment in areas like East Oakland. The proposal includes a six-story affordable-housing building with 119 apartments for up to 400 residents. The apartments—a range of studios up to three-bedroom units—would be rented to tenants making between 20-60% of the area median income. City staff said the goal is to reserve some of the apartments for formerly homeless residents. A “Liberation Park Market Hall” is the second piece of the project—a three-story building with a food hall like Swan’s Market, a performance space, service provider offices, and an outdoor skating rink, like the rink built at the park." On the morning of Sept. 15, I was sort of expecting the call. I was here the night before and as I was closing up, I heard a noise, which prompted me to look out the window. I saw someone casing the business across the street — flashlight, backpack, ski mask — and anytime that happens I know somebody’s business is going to get broken into. So, unfortunately, it wasn’t a surprise. When I got that call in the morning from my alarm company, I knew I was one of them. I had to get up and get dressed and come in, and all I did was pray on the way here that the damage wasn’t great. I was grateful that no one was here at the time, and I knew that no one had gotten hurt. Reposted @theoaklandside ♻️ "Unable to reach an agreement on a new lease with landlord Phil Leong, the co-owners of @theportbar, Sean Sullivan and Richard Fuentes, have decided to shutter the LGBTQ+ venue in late February. “Our last day of service will be the same day as the Black Joy Parade,” Sean Sullivan told the Oaklandside via phone call on Monday afternoon. “We hope to go out with the same amount of joy that there is on the streets.” Leong, who owns the building at 2023 Broadway, Sullivan, and Fuentes have been in negotiations on a new lease for more than a year, with Port Bar operating under a month-to-month agreement in the interim. After months of back-and-forth, including some details of the disagreements between the parties making it into the news, Sullivan and Fuentes decided to close Port Bar after service on Feb. 25. Port Bar will host one last Drag Brunch on its final Sunday. The Drag Brunch Series will make its debut at Colombian restaurant Parche (2295 Broadway) on Sunday, Feb. 4. Karaoke and the RuPaul’s Drag Race viewing party will move to Sullivan and Fuente’s other bar, Fluid 510 (1544 Broadway), which opened in May of last year. Port Bar’s lease expired in 2022, and Sullivan and Fuentes were seeking a renewal of the five-year agreement. The negotiations grew contentious, and, according to email exchanges shared with Oaklandside, interviews with Sullivan and Fuentes, and an emailed statement from Luong, the disagreements are mainly over what types of live events and activities are allowed under the bar’s lease."
