At 6’0, 242 lbs, Thunderbolt Patterson had grown up in Iowa and worked for John Deere in Waterloo, Iowa when he broke into professional wrestling in the Kansas City area. Promoter Gus Karras put Patterson in matches against Don Soto in 1964. In 1965, Patterson moved to Texas and worked with promoter Dory Funk Sr. The following year, he traveled to California, where he held the WWA Tag Team Championship with Alberto Torres. He also continued to work in Texas, where he worked as a villainous character in Dallas until he was turned on by his partner Boris Malenko. Fritz Von Erich had a Russian chain match with Malenko for Patterson’s contract which Malenko owned. In 1969, he worked for Big Time Wrestling in Michigan and Ohio. In 1970, he feuded with Jose Lothario and held the Florida version of the NWA Brass Knuckles Championship. He spoke out against poor working conditions for wrestlers in the 1970s and participated in a racial discrimination lawsuit. He has claimed that as a result, he was blacklisted from wrestling in the mid-1970s. ✨Claude “Thunderbolt” Patterson✨ This week’s news that the WWE announced that they were inducting Thunderbolt Patterson into their Hall of Fame took many by surprise. The surprise was not due to any lack of qualifications for Mr. Patterson but instead it was , in fact, because Thunderbolt had fought for many things the WWE have historically shunned. Patterson broke into the pro wrestling business in Kansas City while working for John Deere in his native Iowa. He was trained for the squared circle by former NWA World Heavyweight Champion Pat O’Connor & Steve Kovacs. His in ring style relied heavily on brawling, his charisma and signature promo style won him legions of fans. Thunderbolt was a frequent main eventer in multiple territories throughout his career but is probably remembered best for his runs in Georgia and Florida. When it comes to championships he won a ton of them in the Memphis territory (CWA) including being recognized as their first World Heavyweight Champion in 1979. Thunderbolt’s promo style was unique for its time and inspired many future pro wrestling personalities. Dusty Rhodes’ American Dream persona was taken from a mix of Thunderbolt’s promos & in ring movements as well as their contemporary Rufus R. Jones. The more important thing about Patterson’s legacy is that he spoke out for the working conditions of all pro wrestlers and was apart of a lawsuit over widespread racial discrimination in the business. Patterson tried to start a union for pro wrestlers which was unsuccessful but led to him working for the SEIU (Service Employees International Union) after his in ring retirement. He was inducted into the George Tragos/ Lou Thesz Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2019 in his hometown of Waterloo, Iowa. Congratulations Mr. Patterson this recognition from pro wrestling’s mainstream is long overdue.

Quoted by @TripleH “He was a Champion in the ring, and championed the health and well-being of his peers outside of it. #ThunderboltPatterson’s influence is still felt today, and will receive the recognition it deserves when he joins the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2024.” Growing up in Iowa, Patterson moved to Texas and worked with legendary promoter Dory Funk Sr. (father of WWE Hall of Famers Dory Funk Jr. and Terry Funk) where he began performing incredible interviews using a delivery inspired by Black Southern pastors. Patterson backed up his talents on the microphone in the ring as he captured titles across North America while defeating iconic opponents like Bruiser Brody and WWE Hall of Famer The Sheik. Thunderbolt was also a decorated tag team competitor, most famously teaming with Ole Anderson before their partnership erupted into a brutal rivalry, which helped launch the legendary Four Horsemen. Patterson was also a contemporary of WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes, and was often credited with inspiring The American Dream’s charismatic persona. His legacy as a showman with his signature quick punches, his incredible blend of power and speed, and his compassion for his fellow man live on as his influence can still be seen in the ring today.
