THE PEASANTS Although I didn’t consider it to be a perfect film by any means, I still enjoyed watching Loving Vincent way back in 2019, and so I’ve been curious to see what the same team was working on with their next project. Like their previous movie, The Peasants was visually stunning thanks to how it was entirely painted by hand, as the vibrant colors and oil textures made every frame of the movie absolutely jaw-dropping to look at. While the artstyle alone were the highlight of the film for me and made it worth checking out, the score of The Peasants also ended up surprising me in how good it ended up being, with the often minimalist, repetitious compositions complimenting the more diegetic moments of folk music in the movie’s turn-of-the-century Poland setting. The Peasants also featured some consistently solid performances across the board, with everyone’s performances being equal parts expressive and subtle in how the actors convey the emotions of their characters. One of my main issues with Loving Vincent was that its storytelling didn’t quite live up to the film’s groundbreaking approach to animation, and that gripe unfortunately ended up being even more prevalent in my experience with The Peasants. On top of being incredibly by-the-numbers in its storytelling, The Peasants also features a cast of characters that really aren’t likable or interesting enough to be compelling, with Jagna barely even having an actual arc aside from getting abused and assaulted multiple times until the film just decides to end. Unlike Loving Vincent, the actual filmmaking occasionally felt like it was working against the handpainted approach of The Peasants rather than alongside it, with the frequent uses of handheld cameras and generic shot-reverse-shot editing turning the otherwise gorgeous visuals into a mushy gel most of the time. The technical achievement of even bringing The Peasants to life kept me from outright disliking it, but that didn’t make me a fan of the film, either, and I really hope that this team makes a movie that actually takes full advantage of their painstaking animation style.
