One of our favorite artists in the past years! Mariam Rezaei is a multi-award winning composer, turntablist and performer. She previously led experimental arts project TOPH, TUSK FRINGE and TUSK NORTH, and in November 2022, received the Paul Hamlyn Foundation #AwardsForArtists in recognition of her contribution to music composition. Her music has recently been described as ‘genuinely ground-breaking’ (London Jazz News 2022) and ‘high-velocity sonic surrealism’ (4* The Guardian 2022). Recent releases include ‘BOWN’ on Heat Crimes, 'SADTITZZ' and ‘SKEEN'. Recent performances include Turntable Trio with Evicshen and Maria Chávez at Counterflows/ REWIRE 2023, and as soloist and co-composer of ‘6 Scenes for Turntables and Orchestra’ with Matt Shlomowitz for ICTUS/Frankfurt Radio Orchestra, for the final concert at IM Darmstadt 2023. Tehran Contemporary Sounds (TCS) is proud to announce the fourth edition of the @tehran.contemporary.sounds festival on the 10th-15th of October. This year will once again bring together some of the most important talents of the Iranian electronic, experimental, avant-garde artists. In the three days of the festival one will witness 15 AV live performances including two special showcases of the artists representing @30m_records and @connect.ifca. It will also be an occasion to hear two artists who were a part of the TCS_002 Various Artists compilation - @avarasti and @temp_illusion The music part is accompanied this year by the @experimentalfilmsociety selection of short films by @yassip @nazgoltk @johnnyclydeart @wasim_ghrioui @anahitasafarnejad @atoosapourhosseini preceded by Q&A with the artists, hosted by @rouzbehrashidicinema in @kinocentral Active since 2018, TCS is a Berlin-based hub for musicians, artists, and collectives with the goal to bring together the different voices and forces of the big spectrum of the Iranian contemporary experimental art and music scene widely spread across the globe and creating a cross-border collaboration hub facilitating an artistic and interdisciplinary dialogue. Two internationally renowned improvisers use the energy of the moment and bring us on a journey between the different styles of music they both represent. In their musical approach they use elements of Folk music from their countries of origin (Iran and Greece) as well as Contemporary and Experimental music. Sofia Labropoulou is a kanun player, composer and improviser who has developed a distinct sound by merging the worlds of Greek and Mediterranean folk, classical Ottoman, western Medieval, experimental and contemporary music. Shabnam Parvaresh is a clarinetist, visual artist and curator from Tehran, Iran. In her musical work, she takes an exploratory approach that combines elements from Persian music with electronic sounds, improvised music, and jazz to create a new musical aesthetic on the clarinet. As it becomes more and more difficult inside of Iran to create sustainable platforms of exchange, this becomes more important for us to fill the gaps and for this exchange to happen here in Berlin! This year we're honored to have the chance to collaborate with @experimentalfilmsociety for a series of film screenings by Iranian and international filmmakers on 10th and 11th of October at @kinocentral supported kindly by @goethe_institut_im_exil ! The Experimental Film Society (EFS) is a company specializing in creating and showcasing experimental cinema. Founded and directed by @rouzbehrashidicinema, the company emerged from the former Experimental Film Society collective. EFS focuses on cultivating film projects that embody its unique cinematic perspective, which has been honed over many years as a non-profit collective. EFS has played a significant role in the creation and support of numerous no-budget or low-budget feature-length films, as well as a large number of short films. In addition, EFS is known for curating experimental film screenings, showcasing the work of filmmakers and artists closely connected to the organization both nationally and internationally. As part of their efforts, EFS has started organizing The Luminous Void Experimental Film Festival, along with performances and talks, which has led to a multitude of events taking place worldwide. Founded in 2000 by Rouzbeh Rashidi, EFS initially operated in Tehran, Iran, before relocating to Europe in 2004. In order to accommodate its growing portfolio of ambitious and professionally funded projects, as well as its EFS Film School, EFS transitioned into a company limited by guarantee (Ireland) in 2017. It is an international full service label dedicated to a new generation of artists in Iran that is opening up a new path by including traditional/classical Persian composition elements, instruments or styles in their music works. 30M Records releases music from a vibrant scene of a country many only know from the news. The name 30M Records refers to the history of the Conference of Birds, which was written in the 12th century by the Islamic mystic Fariduddin Attar. 30M Records has released albums by renowned artists such as Saba Alizadeh, Aftab Darvishi, Bamdad Afshar and Hooshyar Khayam and a compilation album by various artists. This year we're proud to present @connect.ifca to our audience by showcasing three performances by the members of this unique community of female composers on the three days of the festival! Co-founded by @ana.hita_abbasi, @niloufar.nourbakhsh, and @aida.shirazi.composer, IFCA is a group of artists who have combined their experiences and creativity to create a platform for otherwise-unheard musical voices from the Iranian diaspora, and build and support a growing community of female and non-binary identifying composers. When Niloufar Nourbakhsh decided to fully dedicate herself to a lifetime of composition, she found few mentors to look up to in Iran. After moving to the US, she discovered many other Iranian female composers working throughout the world and eventually connected with Anahita Abbasi and Aida Shirazi, forming IFCA in 2017. IFCA has formed connections with dozens of female and non-binary identifying composers from the Iranian diaspora. The association was established in an entirely virtual space, which has resulted in a welcoming network, a site of connection and community. IFCA acts as a platform to support, promote, and celebrate Iranian women in music through concerts, public performances, installations, interdisciplinary collaborations, and workshops. To conclude this wonderful lineup of TCS 2023, and as the last performance of the @connect.ifca special showcase, we're delighted to announce @aida.shirazi.composer 's performance on Saturday 14th of October. Born and raised in Tehran, Iran, Aida Shirazi is a composer of acoustic and electroacoustic music. Shirazi’s music is described as ”unfolding with deliberation” by The New York Times , “well-made” and “affecting” by The New Yorker , and “unusually creative” by San Francisco Classical Voice. In her works for solo instruments, voice, ensemble, orchestra, and electronics, Shirazi mainly focuses on timbre for organizing structures inspired by language and literature. Shirazi’s music has been featured at festivals and concert series, including Manifeste, Wien Modern, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Mostly Mozart, ACHT BRÜCKEN, OutHear New Music Week, MATA, among many others and in venues such as Maison de la Radio France, WDR Funkhaus, Radialsystem Berlin, WDR Funkhaus, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, and Carnegie Hall. Her works are performed by Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Miranda Cuckson, International Contemporary Ensemble, Ensemble Dal Niente, Oerknal, Quince Ensemble, Sarah Cahill, to name a few. Shirazi holds a Ph.D. in composition and music theory from the University of California, Davis. She has studied with Mika Pelo, Pablo Ortiz, Kurt Rohde, Yiğit Aydın, Tolga Yayalar, Onur Türkmen, and Hooshyar Khayam and participated in workshops and masterclasses by Kaija Saariaho, Mark Andre, Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf, Riccardo Piacentini, and Füsun Köksal. Shirazi is a 2022 graduate of IRCAM’s “Cursus Program in Composition and Computer Music.” She holds a B.M. in music composition and theory from Bilkent University (Ankara, Turkey) and a B.A. in classical piano from Tehran University of Art (Iran.) She has studied santoor (traditional Iranian hammered dulcimer) with Parissa Khosravi Samani. Shirazi is a co-founder and co-artistic director of the Iranian Female Composers Association. We're proud to announce that Elshan Ghasimi will perform as part of the @connect.ifca showcase on Sunday 15th of October on our upcoming TCS festival! Elshan Ghasimi (*1981 in Isfahan, Iran) is a master of the tar and setar, a long-necked Iranian instrument, and of Persian classical music, composer, performance artist and teacher. She works in meeting spaces of tradition and modernity, West and East, music, and other art forms. Her approach is greatly influenced by the tradition and practice of the radif, the repertoire of Persian classical music, which she is the first female musician to reinterpret over the course of a large-scale project. She has been living in Germany since 2016, where she composes for and performs with ensemble such as Concerto Köln while also performing as a soloist. Furthermore, she passes on her knowledge in the context of teaching assignments, as most recently at the University of Marburg. For more info and tickets check the link in bio! Each day one artist of the network will perform at this year's TCS! We're proud to present @arefeh_hekmatpanah 's performance on Friday the 13th of October! Arefeh Hekmatpanah (1997 Esfahan, Iran) is a pianist, composer, performer and poet, focused on bringing potentials of her cultural heritage into pieces of music and performance. She works with multiple disciplines, such as dance, theater and electronic music and has improvisation alongside detailed composition as a main element present in her works. Arefeh studied classical piano performance at University of Tehran and then continued her education majoring in composition for her Masters degree at the same university. Arefeh has worked with ensembles and orchestras such as Riot ensemble, Slagwerk Den Haag and Residentie Orkest. She is now a student at Royal Conservatory of the Hague, Netherlands. As part of our special showcase with @30m_records we're proud to announce that @sabaalizadeh will perform on Friday 13th of October! Those of you who missed Saba's performance on 5th of September in Berlin, this is your chance to catch up! Born in Tehran in 1983, Saba Alizadeh is an unparalleled figure at the forefront of contemporary Iranian music, Alizadeh subsequently studied experimental sound practices at Calarts in Los Angeles. Saba began expanding his musical cosmos utilizing different instruments and methods of composing. Apart from Kamancheh, no-input mixer, modular synthesizer, laptop have been the main instruments that Alizadeh has created his sonic cosmos with. Alizadeh also uses a lot of manipulated historic audio recordings and field recordings in a neo-musique concrete fashion. Treating sound as an object has always been Alizadeh’s fascination. “Scattered Memories” on Karl records (Berlin) and "I May Never See You Again" on 30M records (Hamburg) has been Saba's two major releases. “Alizadeh’s level of control of both the traditional and technological aspects of his music is clear from the outset. What results is a beautifully fragmented exploration of internal space, which often wanders between the contemplative and the neurotic” written by Charlie Cawood in Songlines magazine on Alizadeh’s debut album. We'll be presenting two artists from 30M records on the first day of the festival! @aftab.darvishi , @mahyar_tahmasbi & BSA Quartet Aftab Darvishi is a composer whose focud is creating versatile combinations of vocals and mixing different musical cultures. She has presented her music at various festivals in Europe, Asia, and the United States and has worked with world-class orchestras and ensembles worldwide. She is currently pursuing her PhD at the University of Birmingham, studying the cultural connections between the Middle East and the West. Mahyar Tahmasbi is a multi-instrumentalist and composer, skilled in Setar and cello, working to bridge Iranian and Western Classical music. A founding member of Pallett band, with 4 albums and global tours, he's currently pursuing a master's in world music at Codarts Conservatory, Rotterdam. BSA Quartet Kristina Georgieva, Katia Abdel Kader (Violins), Sara Umanskaya (Viola), and Izak Nuri (Cello) formed at the Barenboim Said Academy in Berlin. The quartet gained rapid success, captivating audiences with their warm sound and sincere expression. One of our all time favorites! We're proud and honored to announce that @sarahdavachi will perform at this year's TCS on Sunday 15th! Sarah Davachi (b. 1987, Canada) is a composer and performer whose work is concerned with the close intricacies of timbral and temporal space, utilizing extended durations and considered harmonic structures that emphasize gradual variations in texture, overtone complexity, psychoacoustic phenomena, and tuning and intonation. Her compositions span solo, chamber ensemble, and acousmatic formats, incorporating a wide range of acoustic and electronic instrumentation. Similarly informed by minimalist and longform tenets, early music concepts of form, affect, and intervallic modal harmony, as well as experimental production practices of the studio environment, in her sound is an intimate and patient experience that lessens perceptions of the familiar and the distant. In addition to her acclaimed recorded output, Davachi has toured extensively alongside artists such as Ellen Arkbro, Oren Ambarchi, Grouper, William Basinski, Catherine Lamb, Aaron Dilloway, among many others. Commissioned projects include large-scale works for Quatuor Bozzini, London Contemporary Orchestra, Yarn/Wire, Apartment House, Wild Up, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Radio France, Contemporaneous Ensemble, Cello Octet Amsterdam, to name a few. One of the absolute highlights of the first day of the festival on Oktober 13th would have to be @mariam_rezaei ! One of our favorite artists in the past years! Mariam Rezaei is a multi-award winning composer, turntablist and performer. She previously led experimental arts project TOPH, TUSK FRINGE and TUSK NORTH, and in November 2022, received the Paul Hamlyn Foundation #AwardsForArtists in recognition of her contribution to music composition. Her music has recently been described as ‘genuinely ground-breaking’ (London Jazz News 2022) and ‘high-velocity sonic surrealism’ (4* The Guardian 2022). Recent releases include ‘BOWN’ on Heat Crimes, 'SADTITZZ' and ‘SKEEN'. Recent performances include Turntable Trio with Evicshen and Maria Chávez at Counterflows/ REWIRE 2023, and as soloist and co-composer of ‘6 Scenes for Turntables and Orchestra’ with Matt Shlomowitz for ICTUS/Frankfurt Radio Orchestra, for the final concert at IM Darmstadt 2023. We've been trying and failing the last two festivals for this but we finally can say it! @temp_illusion will perform this year on Saturday the 14th at our upcoming TCS! Temp-Illusion is an Iranian experimental/electronic duo consisting of @shahin_entezami and @behrangnajafi ,both natives of Tehran, Iran. They use a wide range of music programs and hardware synthesizers in their music production to combine noisy and atmospheric layers with melodies and complex beat programming to achieve a unique style of dance music. Temp-Illusion are mainly known as a live band, and they have performed in various shows and festivals such as Roskilde Festival, MUTEK Tokyo, CTM festival, and SET Festival among others. So far, they’ve released two LPs, “Autolected '' and “Pend '', and a remix album “Pend [reworks]” on Opal Tapes. We're thrilled to announce another wonderful performance on Saturday the 14th of October by @holescapes at the upcoming TCS! Idlefon is Hesam Ohadi (b. 1987 in Tehran), an Iranian Canadian computer musician and sound artist based in Calgary, Canada. They began creating electronic music in 2006 after experimenting with various music styles as a drummer. Idlefon's works can mainly be associated with the broad spectrum of modern visceral ambient, fusing muted elements of IDM and glitch into each work's vastness. Their first experience as a producer dates back to 2010 when they made the soundtrack for the animated short “The Radiologist’s Room” by Arash Radkia. They then released 4 tracks as a third of an split album called “Spotty Surfaces” along with fellow musicians Siavash Amini and Nima Pourkarimi. Idlefon's output has often been influenced by daily existence in the urban center of Tehran and later on by the natural beauty of their home province Alberta. Ohadi has previously released Idlefon's music on Tympanik Audio; as of 2021, Ohadi has found a home for their output with the Oakland-based emotive experimental label n5MD. Faded and processed vocals can also be heard throughout the album among deep pads and harsh rhythms that mark his familiar sounds. On Sunday the 15th we'll have the pleasure to immerse ourselves in @avarasti 's melodic drones, dark ambient textures and melancholic compisitions. Ava Rasti (Born 1996) is an Iranian Composer, Pianist, and Bass guitarist, her artistic journey evolved into a deep love for music. Learning Piano in 2008, she mastered theory and practical skills. Adding Bass guitar in 2012, Ava played a pivotal role in the underground post-punk girl band from 2015 to 2020. Simultaneously, she embarked on a compelling solo project fusing Experimental Drone-Ambient and Modern Classical music. Since 2020, Ava has focused on Composing Music for Films. On Sunday the 15th of October, we have the honor to host the duo @sofialabropoulou & @shabnamparvaresh at Bethanien Studio 1! Two internationally renowned improvisers use the energy of the moment and bring us on a journey between the different styles of music they both represent. In their musical approach they use elements of Folk music from their countries of origin (Iran and Greece) as well as Contemporary and Experimental music. Sofia Labropoulou is a kanun player, composer and improviser who has developed a distinct sound by merging the worlds of Greek and Mediterranean folk, classical Ottoman, western Medieval, experimental and contemporary music. Shabnam Parvaresh is a clarinetist, visual artist and curator from Tehran, Iran. In her musical work, she takes an exploratory approach that combines elements from Persian music with electronic sounds, improvised music, and jazz to create a new musical aesthetic on the clarinet. Thrilled to announce to audio-visual performance by the duo @shaahinpeymani & @maryam.katan on the second day day of the festival 14th of October! Maryam Katan (1989, Tehran) works with animation, video and audio-visual installations. Her practice characteristically displaces and repositions meanings outside their original discourses, searching for alternative cognitive models. Recently she is seeking animation as an approach, motion intervention and reanimating as an act of resistance. She actively engages in research on experimentalism, alternative spaces for animation and audiovisual components. Studying MA in Animation in Tehran and Audiovisual Arts in Gent, she has worked as editor of the experimental animation section of „Cinema-animation”, a quarterly of Documentary Experimental Film Center of Iran, and as a board member of “Animation; Experiment” collective hosted by New media society in Tehran. She currently lives and works in Berlin. .……………………… Shaahin Peymani (1990) is a composer and sound artist based in Tehran and Berlin. He often uses found sounds, field recordings, and archival sounds in his works. By recomposing concrete sounds and processed speech voices into collages, he explores into the realm of human perception and the deconstruction of language in audio culture, and seeks to redefine modes of listening by transforming sound as an indication of its source into an abstract structural sound object. Shaahin studied composition in Tehran and Sound Sonic and Sonic arts in Berlin. In addition to sound installations and Audiovisual performances, his artistic practice includes music composition and sound design for film and animation. Stereotype" is an Electronic Rock/Synth wave band that came into being in 2020 amidst the chaotic underground music scene of Tehran. The band's formation coincided with the global spread of COVID-19 and the subsequent lockdowns, which significantly influenced their creative process and perspective on songwriting. The duo behind "Stereotype" consists of @meshcutttt , who handles vocals and synthesizers, and @zhinardalan , responsible for strings and electronics. Their musical journey led them to Istanbul, where they are currently based and actively performing on live stages. Being born from the banned music scene in Iran, particularly for female artists, has left a profound mark on their artistic expression.
