Fijian Drua and Moana Pasifika competed for the second time at the super rugby under 20s competition. As usual the tournament was held in Taupo at Owen Delany park, and displayed some of the premier talent across the New Zealand and pacific island franchises. The Fijian Drua faced the Highlanders for 5th and 6th, going down 59-19. Moana Pasifika played in the 7th and 8th playoff and lost to the barbarians side 36-15. 2 specific incidents in the same game that had nearly cost one team the match. Nigel Ah Wong, was given a yellow card by Angus Mabey for a high tackle. Which by the rules is correct. Contact was high yes, tackle position from Wong was awkward as he was shadowing the defence line with his outside shoulder turned out. This position doesn’t allow him to effectively lower his body height as his torso and hips were facing the sideline. Furthermore the point of contact was actually the Humerus (upper arm) of both players. This yellow card was then upgraded by the TMO Richard Kelly to a red card for being reckless, dangerous and there was no mitigating factors. Saying there was no mitigating factors is wrong. The biggest mitigating factors were he was off balance with most of his body weight going towards the sideline, the point of contact between the two player was the Humerus (upper arm), the tackler could not wrap his arms effectively from where the point of contact was and there was no way he could have differed from the end result. In the Higlanders vs Blues game there was a significant tackle that went unpenalised and was played over and over for the impact. THIS CONTACT WENT UNPENALISED. How come we cannot get the high contact rule correct or at least consistent between officials. Second incident saw Damon Murphy and Angus Mabey, deem an offside penalty to be cynical which sent Sekope Kepu for 10 mins in the bin. This penalty was reviewed and was clearly wrong Kepu had made it back on side (both feet behind the try line). This nearly cost Moana the game. When clear decisions like these, have an immediate effect on a game which eventuates in costing a team a win like it almost did for Moana. When do the officials start getting reprimanded for these decisions? Just like a player would for a specific infringement (I.e. High tackle)? First 3 photos highlanders high shot, direct head contact from blue, photos 4-6 questionable red card offence for high shot, photos 7-9 Sekope Kepu yellow card for cynical offside?? #superround #melbourne #rugby

Quite the interesting start to @superrugby. Highlight match in Round 1 for me was the Highlanders playing a new look Moana Pacifica under All Blacks legend and future Rugby Hall of Famer Tana Umaga. Highlanders showed more promise than they have in recent seasons, especially coming off a one win season last year. Their new recruit Jacob Ratumaitavuki-Kneepkens scoring 2 tries, 10 Beaten Defenders and 92 meters gained may prove to be quite the steal from the Blues. The player I’m most excited to watch this year is Folau Fakatava and he didn’t disappoint setting up a great early contender for try of the year. However, I have gone against the my team the highlanders in the match up against the Blues in Magic round this weekend in Melbourne. All though my heart will be on their side for an upset, I think the blues squad should be too strong.
