WIP F-4C Phantom II engines One of the features I love about this Zoukei-Mura kit are the two complete engines that can be built up to be displayed outside the fuselage. In most aircraft kits you only get the exhaust nozzles and complete engines need to be purchased as aftermarket. So it will be a seriously missed opportunity if I don't incorporate an engine into my diorama! My plan is to fully detail one engine on a trolley stand for the diorama, and then use a set of replacement resin exhaust nozzles from Eduard on the jet. A pair of FOD covers over the air intakes will hide the fact that the engines are missing inside the fuselage. And yes, I'll be posting a video on the engine building process. The General Electric J79-GE-15 powered the Phantom C and other legendary aircraft like the F-104 Starfighter and the B-58 Hustler. What really astonishes me is how monsterously huge these things are... just look at them! And just like that, she suddenly starts looking like a Phantom... Once the nose cone goes on, the characteristic shape is already there even without the wings. Interesting Phantom Phact (see what I did there?): unlike the USAF version that had duplicate controls front and rear, the Navy's F-4s didn't have a stick for the rear seat, or "the pit". The Navy RIO controlled the fire control systems and radar, wasn't a pilot and couldn't land the plane, so visibilty wasn't important. Hence the small rear canopy. Really loving the little bits of background info Zoukei has added throughout the instructions. F-4C Phantom II rescribing panel lines. The tail of the Phantom required some filling and sanding along the fuselage seam. And replacing the detail will require the use of the dreaded scribing tool... To be brutally honest, scribing or rescribing panel lines is not easy! In fact I was so scared of destroying irreplaceable styrene that I avoided it for a long time. Until someone pointed out that by using plastic labeling tape as a guide, this becomes much easier. I'm by no means an expert at this yet, but I can replace basic surface detail and this is something I'll be showing in my next video. Zoukei-Mura F-4C Phantom gap filling. Yesterday I joined the fuselage halves, and this morning I discovered that I had tiny gaps on both sides of the canopy sill... Now just to be clear - this was ME, not Zoukei-Mura! Somehow I still managed to misalign their almost perfectly moulded fuselage halves... Doh!🤦‍♂️ As I had already painted and detailed the canopy sill, and as I'll be posing the canopies open, this will need to be addressed very carefully. The solution was to mix my own coloured filler from Vallejo Plastic Putty and Vallejo NATO Black paint. Easy fix 👍 I'll be covering this topic, as well as rescribing panel lines, in my next video. I'm so impressed with the fit on this 1/48 Zoukei-Mura F-4C Phantom II. It is perfect! Zero warp in the fuselage halves and the cockpit section fits like a glove on the first try. If you've ever built an aircraft model you'll know what a pain the seamline between the two halves is that runs across the aircraft's back. Usually this requires a lot of sanding and filling that just destroys the moulded detail. And it is usually the most visible part of the aircraft model. Zoukei solves this by a spine insert that covers the seam fully. Jackal spare wheel cover Finally, the step I've been delaying for more than a week, having gotten sidetracked by the cargo nets and stowage - scratchbuilding the Jackal's canvas spare wheel and ECM box cover. This is clearly visible in reference pics but missing from the Hobby Boss kit. To make this I again used aluminium kitchen foil. Judging by the 52k YouTube views the Abrams' M1A1 bustle rack tarp collected on my channel, scratchbuilding stuff from kitchen foil is a fan favourite, so I'll be posting a video on how I made this cover soon. Jackal stowage. Woodland DPM pack and net hook closures done. This took about a week longer than I had expected, but honestly the result is well worth it. Interesting discovery in painting woodland DPM: make sure to make the rust brown and green "brush strokes" much larger than the rest of the colour elements, otherwise it looks a bit like Rhodesian Brush Stroke pattern. WIP Jackal stowage. British Desert DPM (Disruptive Pattern Material) items done. It was important to get my head around this as the figures for this diorama will need to be painted the same. I'll be posting a video on how I paint these camo patterns in future, so stay tuned for that. One of the things I discovered is to make sure to paint the darker brown "brush strokes" in both random vertical and horisonal directions, otherwise the pattern will just look like desert tigerstripes. It wouldn't be one of my builds if there wasn't some form of scratchbuilding or modification involved 😁 I'll have to modify the Gecko packs quite a lot to fit the Tetra Model Works cargo nets. Eg. the commander's pack needed to be shortened, and I decided to add some scratchbuilt shoulder straps while I'm at it. It fits nicely into the net pocket now. These stowage pieces will be painted British desert and woodland DPM camo, two patterns I haven't painted in a while. Will be matching paint colours to actual uniform examples I have tomorrow. Jackal side-mounted cargo nets. Not going to lie, I was expecting these assemblies from Tetra Model Works to be easy...and they aren't🤦‍♂️ In fact it is pain in the ass to get these vinyl nets attached! However Hobby Boss did not include these in the kit (fail!), so it is nice to have them in the aftermarket kit. So what are the nets for? Corporal A explains: "The driver's daysack is what that is made for. The one behind it is for the gunner's day sack, and the one on the opposite side is the commander's day sack". "If you’re using a camelback style one (which I believe were issued by then) it would be coyote brown. If it’s a Northern Ireland patrol pack style one it would be a faded Woodland DPM. Unless it has a cover which would be desert DPM. By this point (Operation Herrick 12, Afghanistan 2010) I can imagine a lot of lads were buying their own daysacks so it wouldn’t look out of place to use three different ones mate". A Gecko figure kit fortunately has the packs I'm looking for. Hobby Boss Jackal mirrors. One of the things I love about this specific build is the crash course I've been getting in Jackal and British Army ops in general. Take, for instance, the small detail of folding down the commander's side mirror. Corporal A explains: "The commander's side wing mirror would be folded down to allow for maximum pivot of the GPMG. Those are the old wing mirrors (which is correct in the kit) now they have a double mirror on a swing arm-style mount like what trucks have. Commanders would fully remove the whole mount prior to ranges/exercise/ops as the current ones don’t pivot downwards like the old ones". So if perhaps you're building the Jackal, remember this small detail, not indicated in the HB instructions of course. I made the mirrors from reflective/chrome adhesive masking film from Ammo Mig. Remember the subtle colour difference I had with the Jackal's doors being a paler yellow than the body, after I painted them separately weeks apart? Well it is fully sorted now, thanks to Mig Productions Filter (F420). Diluted this down with odourless thinner and applied with a brush until the colour matched perfectly. I'm really a big fan of these filters! I've used them for everything from pinwashes to colour filtering. Amazing what a difference a roll bar and four doors make...finally this tan bucket that has been sitting on my bench for weeks is starting to look like a British Army Jackal! Because I painted them later there is a subtle colour difference between the doors and the body...my bad! But fortunately easily fixed with a little filtering. Plenty of small details added and issues fixed today. I noticed some cable trunking going to the rear antenna in one of my reference pics. This is easily made with 1mm black spring from AK. Seats and wheels next. Done. Hobby Boss Jackal radios Finally back at the bench after a rather exhausting work week. Not going to lie, getting all the cabling attached to the radios and tucked into those tight corners was a massive pain in the ass, but the added accuracy was worth it. Again, drilling anchoring holes beforehand and using a gel type superglue makes this process a little easier. Unfortunately I can't post the reference picture referred to below publically here, but the model shows the final result. Corporal A writes: "Every socket I’ve circled would have a cable in it. The red circles indicate a thicker black cable with a right angle plug, whereas the blue circles indicate a thinner cable (about half the diameter of the thicker cable) with a straight forward-facing plug and salmon coloured cable".
