Jancee Custodio is a dancer, choreographer, videographer, and aspiring teacher based out of Vancouver, BC. Originally, Jancee had started dancing in highschool and later continued his training in “Kill The Lights Co” under the direction of Ken Yung and Shauna Smith. He was then invited to train under “Untitled” with Prince “Nii” Engmann. Jancee has a notable niche for story-telling, and aspires to inspire those around him. Jancee utilizes the human experience when teaching and choreographing, all while aiming to have his students have fun and feel heard. Jancee has been able to choreograph for Richmond Tourism, and has choreographed for Vancouver’s infamous hip-hop show, The Main Event. 🎬 2024 Senior Capstone Spotlight: COCAINE TO LONDON, by Devin Andrada As a dysfunctional family punk band completes their first album, the timid and disrespected bassist must choose between continuing to endure the band's emotional abuse or missing out on her best chance for musical success. Devin Andrada is a screenwriter, director, and storyteller from New Jersey. The pessimist he is, his scripts often explore the negative sides of creating art; the stress, the tension, the unsavory characters. COCAINE TO LONDON, his first official short film, is no exception. After school, he plans on moving to Los Angeles to continue refining his craft and hopefully develop optimism as he maneuvers through the industry.

🎬 2024 Senior Capstone Spotlight: RED PRIOR, by Sophia Lin RED PRIOR follows an immigrant mother living a solitary life in prison. She mourns her young daughter, whom she chose to give up amid her poverty-stricken living conditions. Her monotonous days are haunted by her unshakeable contrition. But when she meets a kindred inmate, she begins to make sense of her guilt. As her burdens shift from solitary to shared, she finds herself uncovering a new way forward. Sophia Lin is an aspiring writer, director, and cinematographer. She loves watching movies with people in distress, and hoped to make one of her own with RED PRIOR. After graduation, she will be moving to Los Angeles and stress drinking smoothies.

Looking back at my 2012 thesis on laneway housing in Calgary, it's fulfilling to see these concepts come to life in projects across different neighborhoods in Calgary and the Bow Valley. Ideas from back then have been realized in built projects, such as multigenerational living that helps families stay close to their loved ones, and heritage preservation that uses laneway houses as tools for thoughtful development. I've had the unique opportunity to live in two of the laneway houses designed by Studio North, experiencing firsthand how thoughtful design can improve daily life. The Withrow Laneway House was our first new-build project, and it's where I met my wife during construction, and where our son was born. Despite its compact footprint of 750 square feet, we loved the spacious feel created by the double-height spaces. The stair landing doubled as a home office, and plant holders were integrated into the railings, allowing vines to climb the metal mesh. A childhood dream was realized with the fire pole connecting the upper living area to the front foyer. The Beaver Lodge Laneway House was the second place we called home, and we moved in while building The Aster in Banff. Some elements stood out for our family, like the big overhangs covering both entrances. They made perfect outdoor spaces to park strollers and enjoy a dining table all year, staying dry from snow and rain. The courtyard design was what we loved most—it was a mix of beautiful landscaping, picnic areas, personal gardens, and a large hardscaped surface where our kids learned to ride their bikes. It was the space where we spent most of our time and got to know our neighbors, building lasting friendships. It felt like Melrose Place in the mountains! Each of these projects has been a journey of learning, creativity, and connection. Living in two of them provided firsthand insight into the positive impact that thoughtful design can have on daily life. It's been rewarding to see these ideas come to life, helping families thrive while fostering vibrant communities. Green is used as a prominent motif throughout the Chamfer Laneway, both in the generous application of planting and as an exterior colour application, where the colour application denotes transitions from public to private space. Five Faces Laneway blends efficiency and elegance, creating openness and comfort in a compact space. Walnut accents and natural stone elements emphasize interesting geometries and details, allowing the laneway to become a home unto itself while presenting a subtle but sophisticated design. Chamfer Laneway creates a complete and sequenced experience across its double-loaded inner city site with a front-facing home renovation and a new rear laneway house. In order to make one cohesive series of spaces, light and colour are used as functional diagrammatic elements that establish rhythm and order. Two solariums, one added to the front of the existing house’s porch and one perched on the upper level of the new laneway, serve to greet the street on both sides and create a soft, light-filled threshold between outside and inside. For our ongoing millwork wall design, we looked to celebrate the materiality of steel at the structural, textural, and molecular level. Structurally, rolled steel has the tensile and compressive strength to work as thin sheets, allowing for crisp gable lines and barely visible floating shelf details. Materially, the raw dark texture of hot rolled steel creates a durable and robust backdrop with a nuanced reflectivity to catch light from the southern facing windows opposite. Lastly, at the molecular level, steel can be used as a stain additive for wood to achieve a unique ebonized finish, bringing the colours of the wood and steel closer together for a more subtle and sophisticated palette. In Locking, he is a proud member of the Vancity Lockers, a crew that has long standing history in the Vancouver street dance scene. He has spent the past few years training with lockers and originators from Canada, Japan, South Korea, and United States. He has participated in Locking battles across the Pacific Northwest and most notably, in the Vancouver Street Dance Festival. Outside of Locking, Julian has danced all over the globe. The concept behind our ongoing Varsity renovation is “midcentury organic.” This idea was born from a relationship between the midcentury character architecture of the current house and the outdoor-loving identity of its owners. We aim to enhance the characteristic organizational grid, visible structure, and roof form of the existing house, while introducing a language of organic shapes and textures throughout. Multiple wood tones, stone accents, highly textured tiles, and found objects from the family’s trail adventures adorn the interior to create a space that offers a unique new take on the midcentury idea of bringing the outside in.
