Queen’s Hotel in Fort Macleod. The Queen’s Hotel dates way back to 1903. This beauty is a three story horseshoe shaped building, with sandstone blocks for the front facade. Originally the most expensive hotel in town, towards the end the building mainly revolved around a main floor bar area with low income rooms on the upper two floors. The Mountain View Theatre was constructed in the 1930s in Little Chicago (Royalites), as Mt. View Theatre. Almost nothing exists of Little Chicago now, but it was built for oil workers in the early 1900s. After the oil boom in the area came to an end, Royalite Oil, closed up the town. Many buildings were moved from Little Chicago to Black Diamond, including the Mountain View Theatre which was moved in 1952. After the move, it served as the Black Diamond community hall. In 1989, the building closed because of poor condition, but was renovated in the early 2000s. Golden Crown Restaurant in Castor, Alberta. This location is a tricky one to write up. The sign on the outside reads Jessie’s Cafe, but for the longest time the location was run by Andy Wong As the Golden Crown. Most locals referred to it simply as Andy’s. In 2017, Andy closed up the restaurant and moved to Saskatchewan. . The building itself dates from the early 1900s and looks to be in pretty bad shape. On the right is the King Edward Building which dates from 1907. Originally, the building housed a pool hall and bowling alley. In not too many years, however, a change of owners resulted in the premises being used as a bakery. In 1964, the owner of the building on the left (Marshal’s Bookstore) purchased the space and used the location as an office furniture retail space. Later, both buildings operated as Marshal’s despite looking like two separate locations. A new owner in the 1980s and a new business, this time a stationary store. The location has recently been renovated as part of the restoration of the entire area.
