An elegant stone building stands sentry near the side of a country road, its location the only hint of its former life as a squat two-car garage. Owners Michael Clark and Charmaine DeMello, like so many other NYC residents, spent much of the pandemic living full-time in what had been their weekend home. “It really gave us a chance to get to know the property, and we thought it would be so cool to turn the garage into a guest house,” says DeMello. An elegant stone building stands sentry near the side of a country road, its location the only hint of its former life as a squat two-car garage. Owners Michael Clark and Charmaine DeMello, like so many other NYC residents, spent much of the pandemic living full-time in what had been their weekend home. “It really gave us a chance to get to know the property, and we thought it would be so cool to turn the garage into a guest house,” says DeMello. They got in touch with Darren Davidowich, and his partner James Dell’Olio, of The Art of Building, a design/build firm based in Rhinebeck. “They were so amazing, so organized, with such high standards, and great design ideas,” DeMello says. Meticulous and materially fearless hand-work is the common thread in a stunning duo solo exhibition celebrating Albert Shahinian Fine Art’s 26th year in the Hudson Valley. Featured are two New York artists: Polly M. Law, showing bricolage and collage assemblages, and hand-cast bronze vessels by William W. Underhill (1933-2022). Law’s earlier work (paper dolls with deep personal issues) has broadened beyond the female figure to include creatures in the natural world. She uses humble materials and techniques— illustration board, acrylic paint, buttons, wire, beads, thread, feathers—to achieve elegant and sophisticated effects. She manipulates form and employs patterning, rich color and gesture to explore myths of deep time and current self. The Troutbeck Symposium is a student-led historical educational forum. It returns for its third consecutive year at Troutbeck in Amenia on May 1-3, 2024. Middle and high school students from 14 regional public and independent schools gather to listen, present, and discuss findings of their research projects uncovering little-known local histories of communities of color and other marginalized groups that tie to our national fabric. Like their celebrated predecessors, students will gather at Troutbeck to reveal truths—sometimes uncomfortable ones—in a significant site in the history of American thought and social movements, to discuss their findings with educators and distinguished guests. Step inside and you’ll see. Meticulously sourced local produce, dairy, meat, baked goods, and pantry items, many of them organic, fill the shelves and refrigerators. Labels identify the farms and businesses that grew or produced them, and where they are located. “We’re not necessarily an organic store,” says Alex Tibbetts, General Manager. “We focus on good quality items with ingredients sourced ethically and the right way. We only want to work with people who care about what they’re doing, have good farming and manufacturing practices, and produce high quality products.”Owners Soo and Carolina Kim, once weekenders from Manhattan and now full-time Dutchess County residents, were devoted customers of the original Big Rock Market, a roadside farmstand operated by Mark Burdick.
