Today begins the last full week before the crew comes to pack our house for the big move, which means it’s time to start all the prep work before their arrival. Today I started packing up all the keepsakes from our first round of European living, the trips we made to some thirty cities in about sixteen countries. When we did our sightseeing with a wagon or stroller filled with two toddlers and a baby strapped to my chest. Where we drove our old little station wagon an unknown number of miles with an untold number of vignettes and tolls. And as we prepare for round two, I can’t wait to tour cities at a slower pace, where the kids can get more enjoyment and create memories that will last a lifetime. As our collection grows over the coming years, I look forward to the years when the kids see one of our keepsakes and can participate in saying, “remember when…?” Sometimes military life is hard. Sometimes all we want to do is rant about how frustrated we are. Yesterday, to take a breather from the chaos that is PCS season (or “military move season,” for those not in the milspouse community), we headed into Savannah. We had delicious beignets, breakfast, and morning cocktails at @hueysontheriver, then walked along the river just to pass the time. Eventually we grabbed some cold coffee and sat in the shade. This PCS stuff is a lot, even more so when going overseas, and it’s absolutely important to do the prep work, but these quiet, slower moments are important too. We’re to the stage of moving where I take decor off the walls. I take everything down at once, lay it out so it’s easier to wrap and pack. And then I paused yesterday and looked at it all before I put it away - it’s not just decor, it’s our life. It’s Baby Lane and Baby Sarah before we left for his first assignment, it’s different units we have served in, it’s the hills of Germany and the flea markets of France, it’s our girls, it’s my grandma’s paintings. This was one of the tasks I’ve been putting off because as soon as the memories come down, these four walls feel less like a home and more like a building. We lived here for a little bit, and now we’ll live somewhere else for a little bit. I attended a 103 year old Division dinner tradition this weekend. I sat next to my husband, one of the few nights out we get together, and some of our dearest friends. All around me were those currently serving And MANY of those that had come before. The youngest service member in attendance (21) received a coin, And the oldest (92). I didn’t really know what to expect with this event, I know I referred to it as a “ball” but it wasn’t. It was a night of camaraderie, A night of deep reflection of where we’ve been as a Nation, And where we’re headed. A night of recalling and recognizing the sacrifices that have been made by so many that were sitting in that room. A night to reassure those veterans in attendance that their service mattered, And that they are NOT forgotten. The keynote speaker was a Lieutenant General Retired. If I could have recorded his entire speech and blasted it out to the American people, oh man, I would have. It was one of the most powerful speeches I have ever heard. We are ONLY free due to the sacrifices of those who came before us. That’s it. We will only remain FREE while we have brave men and women willing to sacrifice their lives to protect it. And you want to know how he began his speech? By thanking and recognizing his wife. He said he would never be where he is or have achieved what he did had it not been for her innumerous selfless sacrifices and her unwavering commitment and support of their marriage and family. I am so proud and honored to run in the same circle as you, Military Spouse. Our sacrifices aren’t all for naught. You ARE seen, even if most of the time it doesn’t seem like it. I see you, Friend🖤🫶🏼 And DAMN! Lane walks into the kitchen this morning, uniform on and boots in hand, a little bit rushed to get out the door, but as he sits to lace up his boots he pauses and says “Just so you know, April 29th is the day that Weston died. It’s always a bit of a sad day.” I was sipping coffee, getting girls ready for school and still: Instant tears well up. He continues “And also, today is the day that Dan gets to take command, so that’s also really good. I’m proud of him.” And there it is again: Feel one thing, feel the other. Life is always a bit of sitting smack in the middle of the ache and the good, but my gosh do we live there in the military life. Thinking so much of Weston today and all who love him. And also thinking so much of Dan and Lindsay and all who love them. As Lane stands up to walk out the door he points out “I’m going to wear my 82nd patch today to honor them both.” Feel one thing, feel the other. 🤎
