St Kilda’s new marine grade stainless steel base fully tack welded together. Full welding, grinding and surface finishing will come later. You will notice my nearly ‘invisible’ bung welded into the side of the sculpture. (Welds to be ground flush later!) With the bung removed using my homemade spanner and by threading into the internal pipework, it will be possible to vacuum pump out and replenish the 10 L of Vaporol VCI oil (every 20 years) to keep the interior protected from corrosion. In the event that condensation gradually builds up inside, this will be pumped out with the oil too. Additionally, access to the interior is also possible via endoscope should this ever prove useful. It’s all in the detail with this sculpture, and there’s a huge amount of engineering that’ll never be seen!
