Well my start to the sea bass season has got off to a flying start, 2 sessions with 5 bass under my belt. Nothing huge 55cm being the best but given the brown water clarity I've done really well chucking white shads close to groins where the bass cling to structure. Had a short but sweet session on the rocks with @benbassettfishing last night. After some decent action on the heavier gear targeting wrasse, we switched over to our lighter setups and were pleasantly surprised to find some great sport mid water. We found some decent sized sandeels at first, which I was surprised to see took a liking to a Keitech Crazy Flapper that I was flicking around 😅 it wasn't long before we got stuck into some nice chunky mackerel too, which always put up an impressive scrap. We even nabbed a ballan each on our trusty jigpara metals as they were clearly stirred into action by the feeding frenzy that was taking place around them. I've always enjoyed a spring evening session down at Exmouth, the pollack fishing is pretty reliable and although modest in size, they make for some decent sport in the current of the estuary. Before the light started to fade, I was catching them on metals at range and then switched over to soft plastics as they moved in closer when dusk approached. Fishing down the walls found me a tompot and a little ballan on Gulp Isome fished on a cheb. Despite a decent and pretty productive session, the main thing that sticks in my mind is the fish that I didn't catch but really should have.... Before heading home, I had a drop down the wall next to where I was parked and had a solid bite first drop. I lifted into it and it seemed like I was snagged but when I tried to pull out of it by hand, I could feel some pretty heavy pulls back. I immediately assumed I'd hooked an eel and that I'd shortly be snapped off, but to my surprise after a little sustained pressure, the fish came free. There wasn't a huge amount of weight there so I questioned if I'd got the ID right, but I was soon excited to see it was indeed an eel. Going by location and colour, I assume a conger but in the low light I couldn't be sure. It was small, some might say perfect LRF size and I might even have been able to lift it. But this would be my first LRF eel. So I made the decision that I needed to net this one. The fish was about 5 metres down and with a fair bit of current pushing through, I found it really difficult to line up fish with net. Eventually though, I had it in the net, or so I thought. As I began to lift the fish towards me, when a few feet up, it tumbled back down to the water. Turns out I'd snagged the jighead on the outside of my net and the eel had simply wriggled loose as I lifted. Gutted, can't remember the last time I was so tormented by a lost fish.
