Most of my artwork is related to how we interact with this beautiful planet we all call home and share with all living things. Our birds are part of the sky and connected to the thin layer of atmosphere that protects us and allows us to breathe, other mammals and insects share the land we inhabit, cultivate, and call our home, and water is the domain of fish and aquatic life. Our Earth is the common thread that binds all life as we know it together. There is a dual perspective in that we inhabit the Earth, but are also part of it. “Morning Has Broken” has found a new home. I am always grateful for the collectors who make my art a part of their homes. The neat little house on the hill is in the near distance, not too far off, and easily accessible. The lights are warm and inviting, and I can imagine “The House on the Hill” being a center of family life throughout the decades. I think of the different seasons there, the winters warmed by crackling fires, and the balmy summer days when fog settles in or bright sunshine casts its glow on the garden with its fragrant climbing roses, beautiful but thorny on the fence surrounding the house. Its location on the hill allows for protection, views of things far off, gentle breezes or gusty winds. It is inviting yet apart, a little oasis and hub of activity, stately but not pretentious. From plein air on Padre Island to the Post in downtown Houston! It was so windy when I painted my plein air piece that I had to set up my easel on the leeward side of my Jeep Cherokee. Nonetheless plenty of sand got mixed into my wet paint and became a permanent part of my painting from that dawn on the island! Back in my studio, I translated my work to a 48 x 36” canvas and titled it Dune Dance after the rhythmic nature of the dune formations and the columns of clouds blowing by. It has just been juried into the WiVLA (Women in Visual and Literary Arts) Exhibition titled Expansion opening in the historic Post in downtown Houston on Aug. 27 and running through Nov. 11, with a reception on Sept 6 from 6-8 pm. Progress on a still life from life. Once a week I paint with an amazing group of artists. We often take turns creating a setup to paint. I’m amazed at the talent involved in arranging these setups for many of us to paint from different sides and angles. A great weekend in Fort Worth at the Annual Texas Medical Association Meeting. There is much work to be done to deliver the best possible health care in Texas. Science, politics, and the Art of Medicine are all parts of the equation. I am grateful for the countless hours Keith and other dedicated physicians spend in leadership positions to help physicians of our state deliver the best possible medical care. There is always more work to be done. Ever have a painting, and as soon as it sells someone else wants it!? I truly believe every painting I create is an original, besides, it’s impossible to get back into the exact frame of mind when creating one painting to the next. That being said, I will often take the same subject matter and paint it again, from a different perspective ..and a different frame of mind! You may have heard about the devastating fire in the Winter Street Studios that destroyed the art and studios of so many artists there. On Sat. January 21 from 11 am - 3 pm Sawyer Yards in partnership with Fresh Arts and the Houston Arts Alliance will host a Pop-Up Art Show and Fundraiser in Silver Street Studios at 2000 Edwards . All proceeds of the sale will go to the Houston Arts Alliance Emergency Relief Fund to provide stipends to the artists affected by the Winter Street Studio fire who apply. In Houston, we generally have 2 seasons, hot and not hot. We’re currently in our not hot season, when fall and winter kind of run together. Even in January, we get some “fall colors” around here that can be quite beautiful. I was taking a walk the other day, which I tend to do more of in the “not hot” season, and being inspired by some beautiful leaves I found (swipe to see them) started this painting from my imagination without a plan. Without a plan is rarely a good way to begin a representational oil painting, but determined for it to not end up in the trash bin (which crossed my mind more than once) I persisted. Experimenting with this color palette, not one I use often, has been challenging and a great learning experience for me. Sometimes the trash bin is the best option for paintings created without a plan, but sometimes persistence pays off. Painted this scene near High Island on the Bolivar Peninsula today. It’s almost October and the pumpkins are out! I started this painting from life last year, and there it sat. The block in was fun and loose and colorful. In trying to complete it from a photo the values all became sort of mid toned and the nice sculptural pumpkin looked kind of flat and mushy, so I put the painting to the wall for a couple weeks. I pulled it out today, put the reference photo aside, and added some bold shadows and color. I may soften those darkest shadows some, but it’s time to let it rest again.
