The tired old refrain about politics, politics blah, blah, blah. I asked her if peak Carey Price could have made the team and she said nope. The politics were so strong her precious rosebud would still have been cut even if they were as great as Carey Price because of the politics. I asked her why she needed coaching from me or how the goalie school would help her. She seemed shocked. I said why spend a dime on your child for privates or summer camps. If I can get your kid to be as amazing as Cary Price and that wouldn’t work, why even bother? Parents, listen carefully. 1) your kid isn’t special 2) there has always been politics 3) there always will be politics 4) EVERY NHL player overcame politics without exception. 5) the application of politics and nepotism should be welcomed as any test to an athlete’s development. It weeds out the “non-hackers” and gives people things to complain about at Tuesday night beer leagues. No one cares your athlete went through politics. We do however truly care about your child getting to be the best the can be and love hockey. Whatever ego bruising people take because of politics and nepotism their child goes through isn’t important. Over use from over teaching!! I’ll start with I’m not anti RVH, there’s a time and a place for it. Unfortunately, there are so many goalie trainers (not coaches, thanks to my good friend for that one) that are over teaching this passive save selection. The over teaching, especially at the young ages, does NOT prepare the goalie for the future. Quite the opposite actually, it prepares them to give up bad goals. I use the trapezoid for a gauge with the RVH. Above the goal line, on the half wall, funnel shots and most dead angle shots can be played much differently. 95%of the time, the shooter is looking upstairs by your ear. Play the situation, don’t let the situation play you. Too many goalie “trainers” are not teaching the actual game. I guess it doesn’t look as good on social media. Assembly line coaching does not benefit the goalie. Every old goalie knows exactly what I’m showing here. It was very stylish back in the 70s and 80s to slightly curve your blocker like Tretiak. The problem is…….. our blockers back then had zero finger protection. It was basically a work glove, sewn on a waffle board. And the result was any rising slapper could ramp up under the curve of the waffle and strike your fingers directly against the stick. Things are just starting for this young man. I had to spend two weeks scouting Carey Price back in his draft year, although the Leaf’s likely wouldn’t get a shot at him. In my opinion, Rye is on a similar trajectory to Price. There are many ways things may not end up as they did for Price. But, in my 34 years coaching goalies I have never seen a goalie I have coached with this combination of skill, talent and athleticism. His family instilled impeccable respectful character traits. He is supremely respectful to all his goalie coaches and his teammates love him for his leadership. This an uncomfortable truth. Many, many parents and coaches either don’t grasp this or avoid the topic because they fear it may discourage a young athlete. You need to change your thinking. If any athlete is easily discouraged knowing full buy-in doesn’t guarantee anything, they weren’t strong enough anyway. This is actually the true nature of why we compete to be the best. “Are you willing to fully invest your heart and soul into a goal knowing even that may not be enough?” If it was simply a matter of full effort and you were ensured of playing in the NHL, there would be 12,324 goalies in the NHL. Other real factors outside of effort decide the final result.
