Show(s) Spotlight Rural Grit continues to assemble and organize! Tonight is the third of four Vote No! shows titled “Bullies & Liars,” featuring long-time Rural Grit members, Little Maggie. The protest continues with a performance of “A Living Breathing Folk Song” at The Brick. Then on Wednesday, they are presenting “The Great Big K(NO)W Show” at recordBar. The concert will begin at 6:00 PM, and the artists will perform in 15-minute slots until 10:00 PM. In between each performance, there will be guest speakers sharing facts and information. There will be organizations and arts representatives to share information with you. Performances from Bob Walkenhorst, Gerald Trimble and Jambaroque, Cody Wyoming Deal, Havilah Bruders w/ Rich Hill, A Living Breathing Folk Song, Starhaven Rounders, Mikal Shapiro The Musical, Steddy P, The Uncouth, Kadesh Flow, and Freight Train Rabbit Killer. Doors open at 5:00! Rural Grit and the greater East Crossroads community are under threat from the Kansas City Royals’ proposed stadium project. The proposed stadium would significantly, and perhaps permanently, impact several of our city’s few remaining live music venues. The Brick, recordBar, and The Truman would be immediately next to the new ballpark, and we would lose unamplified stages to bulldozers at Chartreuse Saloon and The Pairing: Crossroads Wine & Grocer. Rural Grit remains committed to preserving our community, and we continue to hope that the Kansas City Royals will become neighbors and friends of Rural Grit in East Village. Until then, we are helping organize the voices in our community who love local, live music, the arts, and the community that all of us have helped create over the last three decades. An invitation from Rural Grit and The Brick to join A Living Breathing Folk Song. Please read, follow, support, and participate! “We have a mission going on right now and we’d like you to participate. On Feb. 29, Kristopher Bruders posted a song in response to the Kansas City Royals’ stadium being built in the Crossroads Art District, and he sent out a creative challenge to other artists. He collected the responses and started reposting them into one song. Cody Wyoming joined in to add his song, voice, and support of furthering this challenge into a performance. Rural Grit is providing a place for this song to continue to grow each Monday at the Rural Grit Happy Hour. We would love for you to sing one of the verses (found on the A Living Breathing Folk Song FB page) or bring your own verse to sing this coming Monday, March 18 around 7:30/7:45 pm at the Brick, 1727 McGee. We draw names and announce the groupings. You go off for 5-7 minutes to prepare. We call you all back together and each duo or trio performs. Then the night ends in two large groups and one large Jubilee. The following two Mondays have featured artists, but we will sing as well. An organic, collaborative response to the invisible public officials, lack of community involvement, non-transparent plan and marketing falsehoods of the proposed Royals’ stadium tax, subsidies and relocation to the Crossroads Art District. @ruralgrit Happy Hour celebrates its 25th anniversary this February 2024, and we’re featuring Rural Grit, Kim Stanton, and Mark Smeltzer as our Artists of the Month! A staple of the Kansas City music scene, Rural Grit has hosted a weekly Happy Hour since 1999. RGHH is a group of individuals who play and work together. “We are musicians, artists, teachers, students, social workers, farmers, welders, engineers, chefs, retailers, conservationists, realists, and idealists. Our focus is roots music–old time, old country, honky tonk, blues, jook joint and original music.” After forming a band in northwest Missouri, Mark Smeltzer moved to Kansas City to pursue music and make art in the late 80’s. He is a founding member of Rural Grit Records & Productions which spawned the Rural Grit Happy Hour, a weekly showcase of American roots music that continues weekly after 25 years. In 2006, Smeltzer formed Experimental Instrument Orchestra (E.I.O.) that combined construction of instruments and musical storytelling. Currently he tours at home and abroad with Freight Train Rabbit Killer, a band he co-founded with Kris Bruders in 2013. Through Freight Train Rabbit Killer he has worked to establish connections between art, fashion and music. Kim Stanton, a teacher by trade, returned to the midwest in 1996 and began providing support to her friends’ band Trouble In Mind. Thus, helping to foster the making of the foundation of Rural Grit and by extension the Rural Grit Happy Hour. Coming from a theatre background, she had an understanding of putting on a show and stage management. She curates the Rural Grit Happy Hour show each week. Rural Grit Happy Hour currently happens every Monday from 6pm-9pm at The Brick and will feature a full weekend of events this Feb. 1st-4th to celebrate 25 years in the KC musical community! Show(s) Spotlight A super special week is upon us as Rural Grit Happy Hour celebrates 25 years with 5 days of events beginning this Thursday with “Duets & Trios” at The Brick. “Rural Grit is dedicated to the promotion, performance, and preservation of roots music and strives to provide opportunities for like-minded individuals to further their artistic causes.” Every third Monday of the month for over 24 years, participants have put their names in a hat and duets and/or trios are drawn and announced. Participants gather together to choose songs and practice. Everyone reconvenes to listen, and then after the round, a new round of pairings/groupings is announced. This repeats until the night is over and ends in a huge jubilee. On Friday, “Steadfast” will showcase a variety of Rural Gritters who have steadfastly supported Rural Grit’s mission to further American Roots Music. Each of these artists were instrumental in establishing the Rural Grit Happy Hour and supporting Rural Grit Records & Productions’ mission. High & Dry, CDV Band, Havilah Bruders, Boxcar Brethren, Missouri John Griener, Scott Hrabko, The Matchsellers, The Twang Daddies and The Rural Grit All-Stars On Saturday, “Retrospective” will bring back several powerhouse artists from the first 5 years of the Rural Grit Happy Hour.
