When one thinks of Gayatri Devi, the Rajmata of Jaipur, she is remembered as an enduring symbol of elegance and strength. Born 105 years ago on May 23, 1919 and nicknamed “Ayesha,” she was the daughter of Maharaja Jitendra Narayan of Cooch Behar and Princess Indira Raje of Baroda. Well traveled and educated, she defied gender roles by participating in horseback riding, polo, hunting, and tennis and was known as the “mad princess” for concern over palace servants, who were otherwise non-existent. At 12, she met the 19-year-old Sawai Man Singh II, Maharaja of Jaipur, and after a six-year courtship, “Jai” proposed to her in the backseat of his Bentley as his chauffeur circled London’s Hyde Park. He agreed to her refusal to be bound by purdah, which dictated women be veiled and walk three steps behind in public. Against the approval of her family, they married in 1940. As Maharani, she lived a dazzling life at Rambagh Palace and blossomed into a style icon with Life Magazine pronouncing her as one of the world’s most beautiful women, and Vogue calling her “a dream in sari and jewels.” With her husband’s extended absences, her only company were his two ex-wives who lived in the household according to custom. She raised their son Prince Jagat Singh, founded schools, and fought for female emancipation and human rights. In 1962, she joined the Swatantra Party and won a seat on the Lok Sabha in a landslide election. Her husband died in a polo accident in 1970, and the privy purses, a right to collect taxes, were abolished after a legal battle since independence from British Raj in 1947. In 1975, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who despised Devi’s beauty, hereditary wealth, and dignitary relations, declared a state of emergency and Jaipur palaces were raided before Devi’s arrest on tax evasion charges. Imprisoned for five months in the Tihar Jail, she gave lessons to prisoners and “refused to surrender dignity.” Released on parole over declining health, she left politics and published her memoir, “A Princess Remembers” in 1976. Having mourned the death of her son in 1997, and battled her stepson in court over a $400m estate, she died on July 29, 2009 at age 90.

Her Highness 𝐌𝐚𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐢 𝐆𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐢 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐢 during her campaign for election to the Indian Parliament, Jaipur 1962. In 1962, Maharani Gayatri Devi contested the Lok Sabha elections from Jaipur, and won by a landslide majority, 1,92,909 votes out of 2,46,516 – 78% – a world record margin according to multiple reports at the time. Maharani Gayatri Devi contested on the Swatantra Party’s ticket, the party founded by C Rajagopalachari, the party that was the primary challenger to the Congress Government’s Sharda Devi. Additionally, after the landslide victory in the 1962 Lok Sabha polls, it was evident that Maharani Gayatri Devi was a political juggernaut, a force to be reckoned with. So, in 1965, Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri offered Gayatri Devi a chance to join the party. After Queen Victoria died, Edward VII became King of England and Emperor of India. His coronation was planned in 1902 and several important Indian rulers were expected to attend, one among them was Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II, the Maharaja of Jaipur. The deeply religious Madho Singh was reluctant to attend, for it would require him crossing the sea- a taboo for ultraorthodox Hindus. The priests in Jaipur were against his 'vilayat' visit, but not travelling to London would mean disloyalty to the Crown. The distressed Maharaja was comforted by the permission of the priests to travel to London on certain conditions. No meat was to be cooked on his ship, the idols of the family deities were to be accomodated on board, and his meals were to be offered to God as prasad before he ate. The only permissible water during his 2 month stay in England was the holy water of the Ganges. Moreover, the entire ship= SS Olympia- would have to be scrubbed with gangetic water ro purify it. The ship was given a holy wash in the presence of 25 priests and a puja was performed on the deck. Over a hundred drums containing holy water from Hardwar was transported to Bombay and several businessmen held a reception at Apollo Bunder to bid the Maharaja bon voyage. On 12 May 1902, 25 priests headed by Raj Acharya Bhatt performed a sagar puja, which Kachwaha rulers claimed was similar to a ritual performed by their ancestors at the Setuband coast before conquering Ravana’s Lanka. Silver and golden urns carrying holy water and gems worth lakhs of rupees were offered to the “god of the seas” amidst a choric chanting of mantras as the ship sailed out of Bombay. The journey was such an event in Bombay history that its socialites rented canoes and boats to have their own sundowner as they witnessed SS Olympia chug along at a speed of 14 knot, covering 2000 yards an hour. 3 massive silver urns, which carried 9000 gallons of Gangetic water aboard the SS Olympia, have pride of place at the city palace in Jaipur even today. #jaipur #jaipurroyalfamily #jaipurroyals #royalfamilyofjaipur #maharajamadhosingh #citypalacejaipur #citypalace #princelystate

A place filled with the Jaipuri charm and royalty, this place was beaming with amazing architecture and authentic cultural attractions. The Maharajah Sawai Man Singh II Museum inside the compounds, on the ground floor, is a must visit if you want to know more about the royal families. I could only visit the ground floor area and the museum. The private quarters are not opened for the public, but the Royal Family recently decided to offer tourists the possibility of visiting a few of the floors. If you wish to visit the inner quarters, you may join their “Royal Grandeur Tour”, including guided visits to “Chandra Mahal’s” “Sukh Niwas” (the “Hall of Pleasures”), “Chhavi Niwas” (the “Hall of Images”), “Shobha Niwas” (the “Hall of Beauty”), “Sri Niwas” (the “Hall of Mirrors”) and “Mukut Mahal” (the “Royal Temple” on the top floor).
