It meant everything to her to meet a princess who not only looked like her, but also spoke Chinese. Piper knew at that moment that she wanted to someday be a Rose Festival Court princess and inspire other little kids like her. Piper has been co-leader at her school’s APIC (Asian Pacific Islander Club) for the last two years. Each year 15 outstanding Portland Metro students are selected for the Rose Festival Court. Comprised of junior and senior students, they spent their spring visiting community events, hospitals, youth organizations, and participating in the Rose Festival parades and events. They receive a college scholarship, a travel wardrobe, and mentoring from local business people. Before the Grand Floral parade, one student is crowned Queen of Rosaria, a tradition that endured since the beginning of the Portland Rose Festival. In 2008, I was on the David Douglas Rose Court! Brenda Olmos was our representative (she did a wonderful job representing DDHS, and is currently marching in the Grand Floral Parade with the Royal Reunion Marchers), and the experience of being on my school's court was delightful. I decided to apply because it was my senior year, and I thought I may as well give it a go, as at the time only seniors were eligible to apply. I showed up, gave my speech, and answered the judges questions. Imagine my surprise when I was called as one of the six! Today was so fun! I spent the morning with my PRF Princess. We painted our own pottery at Mimosa Studios (10/10 would recommend), had lunch at Hana Japanese Bistro, and then grabbed some ice cream from Salt & Straw (my first time there!). Stella is the founder of the Passion Impact Volunteer Event Program, a nonprofit that fosters self-awareness, and social justice through civic leadership as well as being involved with College Possible and Upward Bound. She plays trumpet in her school’s Jazz Ensemble and loves to play tennis and read fiction novels in her spare time. Meet Princess Jayilee Sloan, a senior at Jefferson High School and welcome her to the 2022 Rose Festival Court presented by Unitus Community Credit Union. Jayilee is on Honor Roll and a member of the Black Student Union and Black Magic. She plans to obtain her bachelor’s degree and go into the medical field as a pediatric nurse. In her spare time, Jayilee loves to explore her passions for art, fashion and photography, and visit the @portlandartmuseum to see the newest exhibits. Maria is a varsity athlete who plays volleyball, basketball and runs track and field, where she lettered her Sophomore year. She loves Portland's holiday season where she can view the Christmas lights that fill downtown. Awek is a Vice President of the DD Black Student Union and a Varsity basketball player, where she received an award in the NW League 3rd Team All-League '19-20 season. She is most proud of her growth through our high school, and learning to understand the value of self-esteem, something that her father instilled in her. Awek plans to attend the University of Portland School of Nursing and hopes to become an OBGYN. She is most looking forward to the Starlight Parade at this year's Rose Festival.
