The pacing is so off, the writing is terrible, the cinematography is all over the place, and the score… Nick Cave ?… wtf ? In terms of the acting, I think the actors playing Blake, Mitch, and Cynthia Winehouse did good. Marisa as Amy, Idk who she was playing but that wasn’t Amy. I’m sure she’s a good at her craft with the correct project, but as Amy Winehouse, not once while watching this film did I feel I was watching her play Amy Winehouse. The singing… sounded like Fran Drescher doing karaoke with auto tune. People saying she did a good job or that they felt she truly captured Amy, ya’ll need to stop lying. As far as the story, it’s entirely focused on Amy’s relationship with Blake and her dad - ENTIRELY ! There are few instances where we see Amy’s relationship with her grandmother and I would’ve liked to see that relationship more, than the two it’s focused on. No scene in this is powerful enough to cause tears, like you hardly connect to Cynthia Winehouse’s character to actually feel emotional when she passed. Same can be said about the main character, Amy. The actress playing Amy’s mom is only in it for like 3 or 4 scenes. I know a movie can’t fill in everything, especially with a short life that was so full like Amy’s, but this movie made NO attempt at telling Amy’s story. They seriously just told a made up story of what someone (probably the screenwriter and the director) imagined Amy’s relationship with Blake was like. The Mitch storyline, that’s just his book on screen. To summarize, the story is someone’s Amy and Blake fan fiction blended with Mitch’s version of things. I also have to mention the goofy directing decisions, one of the ones I laughed out loud at was Blake wearing a grey polo in jail, while every other inmate wore a regular grey sweater and pants combo (not sure if this is the default jail outfit in England) and another one is them pulling a Forrest Gump and 90’s editing Marisa Abela into the Jonathan Ross show interview in 2004. 👇🏼 more in comments
