Kvantová čísla n, m, l a s, používáme v chemii pro popis elektronů a jejich orbitalů v atomovém obalu. Každé toto číslo odpovídá určité energii tzv. vlastní číslo, které se vzájemně ovlivňují, a tak pomocí nich dokážeme popsat různé symetrie daného systému. HLAVNÍ KVANTOVÉ ČISLO n - určuje celkovou energii elektronu, tedy i slupku, ve kterém se elektron nachází - nabývá hodnot 1, 2, 3,…, 7 (podle period v PSP) VEDLEJŠÍ KVANTOVÉM ČÍSLO l - určuje tvar a symetrii elektronu - tvoří podslupky s, p, d, f - souvisí s kvantovým orbitálním momentu hybností L - nabývá hodnot 0,…(n-1) MAGNETICKÉ KVANTOVÉM ČÍSLO m - určuje orientaci orbitalu v prostoru - nabývá hodnot -l,…,-1, 0, 1,…+l SPINOVÉ KVANTOVÉ ČÍSLO s - určuje orientaci elektronů ale také protonu a neutronů - má vždy hodnotu -1/2 nebo +1/2 Na kvantových číslech závisí popis elektronové konfigurace v atomu, uspořádání elektronů uvnitř elektronového obalu. Existují 3 pravidla: • Výstavbový princip - říká, že orbitaly s nižší energií se zaplňují elektrony dříve než orbitaly s vyšší energií (přednostně se obsadí orbital, u něhož je součet n+l menší) •Hundovo pravidlo - elektrony se zaplňují do orbitalů o stejné energii po jednom, poté se párují s opačným spinem •Pauliho princip výlučnosti - říká, že žádné dva elektrony atomu nemohou existovat ve stejném kvantovém stavu. Liší se právě spinovým číslem. Ostatně, bych zde mohla připomenout, že elektronovou konfiguraci často na školách zapisujeme ve čtverečkách, které představují daný orbital, s šipkami představující příslušný elektron se spinem. Nověji ale zapisujeme pouze pomocí kvantových čísel a počtem elektronů atomu/iontu nebo lze používat podtržítka _, kam se dopisují šipky. Příkladem uvedu úplnou elektronovou konfiguraci mědi, jelikož u ní je zapamatování její el.konfigurace důležité, protože je to nestálý přechodný prvek má ve své valenční vsrsvě orbitalu 4s pouze jeden elektron: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s1 3d10.
