That is why she trained her daughter on the Red Island, the island of Ares, dedicated to war. Anastasia Prince of the Amazons grew into the fiercest warrior in millennia, but at great personal cost. Trained for war, she saw everything as a battle. It wasn’t until she entered Man’s World that she saw it, too, contained beauty and kindness, and that in preparing for war the Amazons had committed cruelties they sought to shelter themselves from. Anastasia saw the interconnectedness of the world, and was gifted the great silver web by Arachne, as well as gauntlets that could deflect weapons but also unleash a deadly “bite.” Now, taking the name of her new patron, Arachne tries to fight for justice, beauty, and grace, in a world all too willing to sacrifice those at any given chance. Meet Scarlet Tanager! Damian Wayne + Scarlet Witch #AmalgaMay2024 Damian Maximoff is one of the most dangerous people on the planet. Along with his brother Swift, he was trained as an assassin nearly from birth on the slopes of Mount Wundagore, home of their mother, the High Demoness. Whereas Swift developed superhuman speed, Damian showed a high aptitude for magic, using the forces of chaos itself. His worldview was thrown into disarray when his mother sent him to distract and disorient his father, the vigilante and revolutionary Bruce Magnus Lensherr. Bruce showed Damian patience and kindness, and the depth of his mother’s deception was revealed; Damian and Thomas Maximoff may not be Bruce’s children at all. Damian still uses his prowess and magic to fight for a better world at his adoptive father’s side as the Scarlet Tanager! This is felt like mostly a palette swap, tbh, but I’m happy with the tiara/batarang bit, especially! I love Damian to bits, and Morrison’s Batman run is one of my faves, so I mostly used Frank Quitely’s Robin design, and of course the inimitable Russell Dauterman’s current Scarlet Witch design, trying to also pay attention to what a scarlet tanager’s actual coloration looks like. Coming up with a backstory was challenging, as Wanda and Pietro’s origin has always been messy, and especially more so as it stands right now. I figured Swift would be Quicksilver + the Heretic, with their mother being Talia Al Ghul + the High Evolutionary, and of course their father being Batman + Magneto, a character that seems fascinating and that I simply cannot imagine a good name for. 😂😅 (A little Speed & Wiccan snuck into the origin too). Meet Dr. Lazarus! Ra’s Al Ghul + Dr. Strange #AmalgaMay2024 If Stifin Gharib was haughty, it was perhaps with good reason. The sultan’s favorite physician, he was a highly skilled surgeon. However, in his hubris he misdiagnosed the sultan’s son, and the man’s subsequent descent into dangerous psychosis was blamed on Stifin. The sultan crushed Stifin’s hands and cast him outside of the city as punishment. Stifin, despondent and depressed, searches for a way to restore the use of his hands. He learns several martial arts in the process, becoming a gifted warrior, but it is not enough for him. Eventually, he hears of The Ancient Sensei, a seemingly immortal man and - if the rumors are true - a talented magician. When Stifin finally manages to track him down, the Acient Sensei is impressed with Stifin’s determination, and introduces him to his secret; the Lazarus Pits, pools of magical liquid that can not only heal any wound and revive the dead, but also “unburden your mind from its feeble shackles,” a step the Ancient Sensei insists is a key to understanding sorcery. The Lazarus Pits heal Stifin’s hands, but also drive him mad, leading him to murder his master and subsequently learn the mystic arts alone. Centuries later, the man now known as Dr Lazarus is a cunning and capricious figure, often disdainful of humanity but able to marshal great mystic forces as the Head of Sorcerors in order to protect the planet! Just as felines are mercurial, Selina’s service takes many forms… the enigmatic Ms. Knight, reappropriating stolen wealth, the heroic Knight of Cats, and the terrifying Eye of the Moon, dressed in bones and rags. I was super pumped on my initial image; Selina in a dark purple suit with a giant cat skull for a head, but I realized that was more Khonshu than Moon Knight. Meet Clover! Poison Ivy + Domino #AmalgaMay2024 Clover prefers to keep her past a secret; her work as a mercenary and eco-terrorist has kept her on both sides of the law. One of the rumors surrounding the origins of her luck powers says that she was the product of a government eugenics program to create the perfect soldier; a project overseen by Dr. Ziro Woodrue, who also once had Clover replaced with a Plant Mimic clone. Clover’s alliances are fickle and she often works alone, armed with a variety of weapons that usually includes her “weedkiller” spray… a toxin that is harmful only to humans. The design itself is fairly simple - taking inspiration from Domino’s jacketed mid-2000s (?) look and Poison Ivy’ costume in the Harley Quinn cartoon! I’m quite pleased with this illustration. Her backstory is a mess because so much of Domino’s history is tied up in groups like Six Pack and X-Force, while Pamela usually works alone. Meet Presage! Morpheus + Vision #AmalgaMay2024 Anthony Ultron - technician and magician and magical construct himself - sought to create a perfect being to destroy his enemies. Fabricating a synthetic body, he wished to call into a being of dread power, but instead channeled the ineffable embodiment of dreams. Powered by his ruby, the being took to calling himself Presage, and eventually learned to see the beauty of humanity, and the capability of change within himself. While this image and tagline gave themselves to me pretty immediately, trying to - shall we say “synthesize?” - the stories of these two characters was more of a challenge. Meet Soil! Clayface + Groot #AmalgaMay2024 Mercenary Matt “Loot” Hagen was hired to steal from an archeological dig when, hiding in a cave from the dig’s security, he happened upon a strange seed. Quickly pocketing it, this conquering root invaded Matt’s flesh, transforming him into Soil, a deceptively intelligent and highly malleable mound of living dirt. I included my drawing of this one because I’m so damn pleased with it. As you can probably tell, Batman TAS Clayface is my boy, so chucking him full of rocks and grass was a lot of fun.
