🛒 We are proud to announce Everything Must Go, the upcoming solo exhibition by Dries Verhoeven about shoplifting. On view from June 7th until June 16th at Nieuw Dakota.⁠ ⁠ In an age when we like to make a display of our virtuous behaviour, Verhoeven focusses on the socially undesirable. For how virtuous are we really when we think we are unobserved, at the self-checkout for instance? Verhoeven spoke with more or less well-off people who occasionally ‘forget’ to pay for things every, with thieves in detention and those who consider theft as a form of resistance. He invited these shoplifters and self-proclaimed Robin Hoods to do some soul-searching, which resulted in a grim depiction of the darkest depths of our moral actions. ⁠ ⁠ Everything Must Go is part one of a new diptych, part of the artistic program called 1 x 2 at Nieuw Dakota. Within this concept, one theme is exhibited in two different and nearly opposite ways. The current theme is 'give and take,' with the first exhibition being Everything Must Go, which highlights the aspect of taking. In this durational performance by Dries Verhoeven, shoplifting at the self-checkout is examined as a late-capitalist phenomenon. ⁠ ⁠ Be welcome to visit. Op Gelijke Voet (On Equal Ground) is a representation of an abstracted topographic map, crafted in shades of gray using carpet tiles. By eliminating color and markings, the artwork becomes open to diverse interpretations, symbolizing both mountainous peaks and valleys. It metaphorically captures the imbalances inherent in the relationship between Goof Kloosterman and Jesse Strikwerda—highlighting dynamics of elevation, diminution, and the potential for emotional distance.⁠ Throughout its creation, the carpet served as a platform where the former lovers engaged in dialogue, striving to bridge the gap between them. The various drawings on the carpet visually depict conversations between the ex-partners. A recurring motif in these images is clouds, symbolically representing different facets of a relationship. Long Time No See is a contemplative piece that symbolizes the reunion and artistic collaboration of two former partners and creative minds. In this installation, Jonas Lund and Anika Schwarzlose engage in a parallel dialogue, each on their own screen. The conversation spans a decade (2012-2022), exploring how their artistic practices evolved independently post-separation. The work becomes a narrative of divergence and growth, reflecting on individual journeys while acknowledging a shared past.⁠ The setting is minimalist, focusing on the artists and their spoken words, creating an intimate atmosphere. The two channels, while separate, are in constant subtle dialogue, echoing the complexities of their past relationship and the intersections in their artistic development. The work Lifeline portrays the end of the relationship between Bas Schippers and Helena Hoogenraad. The (extended) triptych abstractly explores the profound disparity in their visions for the future: she aspired to build a family, while he sought to focus on his career.⁠ ⁠ On the left panel, Hoogenraad depicts flowers and butterflies symbolizing the concept of new life; Schippers illustrates his dynamic life path on the right side. Introducing one of the duos in It’s Not You, It’s Me: Kenneth Aidoo & Anouk Hoogendoorn ⁠ ⁠ The encounter between Kenneth Aidoo (1988) and Anouk Hoogendoorn (1995) occurred in 2017 during an exchange project at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, leading to a relationship that lasted about a year. Their breakup, as natural as the beginning, gave rise to numerous uncertainties. The couple had always communicated with few words, fostering a pleasant naturalness, but delving into deeper layers was often left unexplored. Introducing one of the duos in It’s Not You, It’s Me: Helena Hoogenraad & Bas Schippers⁠ ⁠ Helena Hoogenraad (1992) and Bas Schippers (1992) graduated from the AKI in Enschede with a degree in Fine Art. Their artistic connection began during a joint exhibition and grew into a relationship through the exchange of cat videos on Instagram, despite the physical distance between Groningen and Amsterdam. Their love story ultimately ended due to incompatible future plans: Schippers wanted to focus on his art, while Hoogenraad longed for family life. Introducing one of the artist duos in It’s Not You, It’s Me: Michaël Bloos (& Eva Meijering) ⁠ ⁠ Michaël Bloos (1988) and Eva Meijering (1989), who shared a 14-year relationship, are currently undergoing a breakup initiated by Meijering. This sudden change prompted Bloos to reassess his future plans. Meijering, after years of being together, now feels overwhelmed and desires time for self-focus. Originally, the project aimed to explore their relationship and its termination process. Despite extensive discussions about the breakup, they hoped a new visual approach would aid in processing and exploring a different relationship dynamic. However, midway through the project, Meijering decided she wasn't ready for collaboration. Introducing one of the artist duos in It’s Not You, It’s Me: Jonas Lund & Anika Schwarzlose ⁠ ⁠ Jonas Lund (1984) and Anika Schwarzlose (1982) met at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, where they both studied photography. Between 2007 and 2011, they shared the highs and lows of their art education and the challenges of life as artists after graduation. After this phase, their interests shifted, and the couple grew apart during their individual postgraduate studies. After four years, they ended their romantic relationship, but today, they remain good friends. Introducing one of the artist duos in It’s Not You, It’s Me: Jesse Strikwerda & Goof Kloosterman ⁠ ⁠ Strikwerda met Kloosterman in 2017, shortly after he moved to Utrecht. While their relationship started on a promising note, cracks gradually surfaced after an initial period of intense infatuation, revealing misalignments in their long-term personal needs. For Strikwerda, the relationship served as a source of stability amid life changes, but Kloosterman sought a contrasting impetus and felt constrained. As doubts grew, Strikwerda attempted to overcompensate in a futile bid to anchor Kloosterman to the relationship, ultimately leading to its termination. Currently, their communication is sporadic and casual, with no discussions about the relationship or the breakup. This project presents an opportunity for a meaningful post-breakup conversation where doubts and questions can be openly addressed, with the goal of achieving a mutual understanding. 🚧 We are closed for maintenance 🚧 Hello farm family, With the leaves falling and winter approaching, it’s time to wrap up another fantastic season at Project PACE Farm! 🌦️🍂 While our doors will be closed for visits until the farm is blanketed in snow in mid-December, our mobile farm service remains available year-round. 📆 In addition, our volunteering events are planned to take place in November, on the weekends. Here’s a snapshot of some memorable moments from this season: 👨‍🌾👩‍🌾 We welcomed new team members! 🐤 Several schools, some friends and ourselves incubated many chicks and ducklings. They are now grown up and ready to join their big brothers and sisters in the barns. 🐇 We had many lovely baby bunnies, who will be moving indoors into the duck barn for the winter. 🦙 We had lots of fun mobile farms all around Montreal (and beyond!) at daycares, in schools, in parks, cities, special-needs organizations, birthday parties, and even at the circus! 📖 We released our children’s book! 🧘‍♀️ We used our platform for yoga, book-reading events and birthday parties 🥳 🐑 We launched our pilot project of Lawn Mowing by sheep and goats, and it was a great success! 🌱 👻 Our Halloween tours were lots of fun and we added a few new special effects this year 🪄 🎥 We had an interview with CBC (link to be released soon!) 🤩 Your enthusiasm and support have made this season truly memorable! 👨‍🌾 Today let us re-introduce Edward Privorotsky, the visionary founder of Project PACE farm! 🚀 Back in 2014, Edward decided to trade in his computer screen for a life of adventure as an inventive farmer. With a twinkle in his eye and a mind full of ideas, he embarked on a journey to create a farm that harmonizes with nature. 🌱 🔬 Drawing inspiration from permaculture pioneers like Bill Mollison and Geoff Lawton, as well as local gurus, Edward has become a master of turning innovative concepts into reality. 🌿 Since he started the farm, Edward has tested aquaponic systems, mobile coops, regenerative grazing, hugelkultur, vermicomposting, compost toilets, food preservation through dehydration, and many other projects. He has also designed all and built most of the structures you find around the farm including the mobile coops, various barns, Mobile Farm shack and so on. He has driven far and wide around Quebec to bring animals, hay, and fodder to the farm. 🌈 When Edward isn't busy on the farm, you'll find him dreaming up exciting new projects, repairing broken things 🔧, watching documentaries, practicing yoga and fishing! 🎣 💡 Edward's passion for sustainability and his never-ending quest for knowledge have shaped the very essence of Project PACE farm. Lina illustrated the children’s book “Where is my Maah-Maah” for Project PACE as well as the Farm Zine. 📖 Lina recently became a yoga teacher and now teaches at the farm! She’s still at the beginning of her yoga journey, but learning is a never-ending path. 🧘‍♀️ Lina also loves the animals at the farm; she finds connecting with them is easier than with people (no, really!) 🐴 Jokes aside, Lina is easy-going by nature. 🌿 Aside from freelance work, Lina also runs a small online shop featuring prints and stickers of her work! He creates an atmosphere highly appreciated by humans and farm animals. Meet one of our newbie Tour Guides and Mobile Farmers, Roxanne! Roxanne is a fast learner who embraces challenges. She is very punctual, super well organized, very patient with animals, and great with children! 🎉 Since she was little, Roxanne has known that she wanted to dedicate her life to caring for animals. She even has her own little zoo at home, with 4 cats, a bunny and 2 dogs! 😲 Roxanne will be studying Animal Health and Disease starting this fall, but in the meantime, she has been working with us on the farm, guiding tours and bringing our little friends 🐥🦆🐇🐐 to daycares and birthday parties during mobile farm events! Roxanne loves spending time outdoors and adores going on adventures, like hiking and paddle boarding with her pups! A month ago we celebrated Mother’s Day, and today it’s time for… 𝕗𝕒𝕥𝕙𝕖𝕣'𝕤 𝕕𝕒𝕪 𝕠𝕟 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕗𝕒𝕣𝕞! Today, we want to give a special shoutout to the amazing farm papas! 🐑🦙🐓 First, we have our rooster, Bouillon II, who takes care of our recently incubated chicks 🐓🐣🦆 along with two of our male rabbits, Sugar and Caramel, who are also safeguarding chicks in the coops next door 🐇. Next, we have Riley and Pita, our sweet alpacas, who have unexpectedly adopted little Milton (or rather, he adopted them), the irresistibly adorable and super friendly 8-month-old alpaca 🦙❤️ Then, there’s Vincent Van Goat, the proud father of 7 absolutely adorable kids. Some of these little ones are exact replicas of their handsome dad, inheriting his charisma and social skills 🐐🫶 We also suspect that Pumpkin, our Halloween star 😎, is the proud father of some of our precious lamb cuties 🐑 To all the fathers, thank you for your love, care, and guidance! Your presence makes our farm a happier place. Continuing our team introductions… Re-introducing Yasmine, our awesome tour guide and occasional mobile farm facilitator! 🥰 She joined our farm right before the 2022 Winter Tours. Yasmine is a CEGEP student in the Environmental and Wildlife Management program. She is extremely well-organized and, even though Yasmine studies full-time, she still manages to work at the farm at least once a week. 😲 During our volunteer season, Yasmine brings her family to help out! We’re incredibly grateful to have met them! 💕 Yasmine loves animals 🐔🐰 and she’s really good at bird identification. She’s also super energetic and makes the farm visits super interesting by giving little fun tidbits about all the animals. When she’s not outside, Yasmine likes to make things with clay. Meet Becky, one of our farmers and assistant builders. Becky is also known to do the occasional tour or mobile farm. When she isn't at the farm she can be found writing ✍, shooting photography 📷, or at the gym 💪. Becky used to be a nurse in the States but has since decided to dedicate her time to caring for animals.🐮🐴🐐🐑 She is also studying Permaculture Design in her free time to hopefully become a designer on the farm in the future. Farm animals and farm visitors absolutely adore Becky! 💕 She possesses a unique talent for understanding animals and persuading them in a kind and gentle manner to do what needs to be done.
