Here's what Jack's parents have to say about his time at Hammer & Strings: "Jack started piano in elementary school, and despite numerous moves and different teachers, he practiced diligently and enjoyed learning different skills from different teachers. He has entertained his family with his exciting pieces, and recently started to learn songs they specifically asked him to learn so they could sing along. When Jack joined Hammer & Strings in 2022, he enjoyed challenging himself further through their excellent program and performance opportunities. Congratulations to Harmony G, our May Student of the Month! Harmony is a Junior in high school. She enjoys all of her classes, especially Yoga, Film and TV, and, of course, Choir! She loves all types of music. Some of her favorite artists are Meghan Trainor, Mason Ramsey, Benson Boone and Luke Combs. She likes music from the 50’s, 60s, 70s, and 80s, with ABBA and Don McLean's "American Pie” (a tribute to Buddy Holly) at the top of her preferred list. She had the privilege of learning the entire Durufle’ Requiem with her high school choir her sophomore year. She also loves Handel’s Messiah. She was blessed to be able to perform it with a community choir, hosted by her church, in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022, and 2023. Her favorite vacation destination is California. She loves to go to the Beach and visit Disneyland. Faculty Highlight! Chris Rice is the head of our Chamber Department at Hammer & Strings Conservatory. He is an accomplished performer and teacher on both piano and cello. Giving concerts with his brother, Johnny, they have performed extensively in the U.S., including concert halls, churches, schools and house concerts. In Europe, he has performed in Warsaw, Vienna, Salzburg and Munich. Chris has a flourishing private studio, and his students have been winners and awarded high marks in competitions and evaluations in Arizona. He is in demand as a guest teacher giving master classes, working with students in classroom settings, and presenting workshops to students in schools and summer music camps. He is currently working on many projects that aim to make classical music more accessible and relatable through performance, teaching, recordings and social media, especially to younger audiences and students. Here's what Nora's parents have to say about her time at Hammer & Strings: "Nora began formal piano studies with Dr. Olga Kim at Hammer & Strings Conservatory four years ago and made rapid progress culminating with a beautiful senior recital, numerous accompaniment opportunities and summer studies at Brigham Young University. She plays piano in her high school's jazz band, organ for church services, and in the Épanouissement Trio. Nora will attend Brigham Young University in the fall with a major in International Relations and a minor in French with a heavy dose of music, however she can fit it in."
