Chesty Puller VFW Post 1503 in Dale City, Virginia is a must stop post to visit! There was so many types of different architecture within this post. As a history nerd I was excited to visit this VFW. I was able to get my fill of historical memorabilia and brick work. The canteen had the old style wood working with little items here and there to catch the eye. Our canteen host Stacy was amazing! Even though the canteen was busy and she knew we were from out of town she did her best to include us in conversations and gave us the best tour she could without neglecting the regulars. American Legion Post 8 in Washington DC was a nice little oasis on a brutally hot summer day. Renee the Canteen Host was just amazing to us visitors. She really made us feel welcomed and comfortable. VFW Post 6658 in Emmitsburg Maryland is a great post. If you’re in the area, we recommend you check it out. We stumbled upon this post while walking downtown on vacation. Once we figured out how to get inside we were immediately impressed. Canteen host Monica greeted us with a smile and a warm welcome. She was tending to other members and took time to show us the hall in the back,and answered all our questions. This post is lucky to have her! The hall is extremely spacious, and they are working on adding more memorabilia. The historic building adds so much charm, and they are doing a great job of blending the old and new. The canteen is a nice size and the members were so nice to us. We want to give a special thank you to Donna. She is a member that went above and beyond. She noticed we were not locals and sat with us at a table. She has some incredible stories and even kept cold pop and water coming for John. Emitsburg, Maryland!!! What an incredible American Legion!!! American Legion Post 121 welcomed us with open arms as soon as we walked in. This is a small town feel Post in a larger city. We were blown away by the memorial outside and the incredible POW/MIA display inside. Just a beautiful non traditional display. The open layout was bright with natural light and the canteen shape allowed for everyone to participate in conversation. Canteen Host Joyce was just an incredible joy and amazing person! Francis Scott Key American Legion Post 11 in Frederick, Maryland was an incredible building. This post was very spacious and had one of the largest canteen bar tops we have ever seen! The size of the open area canteen was just amazing. The day we stopped there was many people and all were having a great time. Even with the canteen being so busy the canteen hosts were doing their best to keep up and did a wonderful job :) We want to thank Patty and Clive who were regulars for having a great conversation with. And! We’re Michigan Natives!! 2nd Canteen Host Kelly was just a sweet heart! Even though she knew we were not regulars she treated us like one! American Legion Post 612 in St. Thomas, Pennsylvania was just an incredible first visit on our vacation to the east coast. We got there a little early and toured the immaculate grounds that are on their property. The Post was so gracious they actually opened up early for us. VFW Post 7729 in Muskegon, Michigan was a great stop for us. The clubroom has been recently updated with brighter colors and plenty of bright lighting. This post was very friendly to us and even enjoyed that our youngest son was visiting. It has a nice open floor plan and had a welcoming feel. VFW Post 5096 in Custer, Michigan we had to come and visit a second time. The first time we stopped it was closed. VFW Post has so much potential in this building. Canteen Host Lorie was new but was trying so hard to be a wonderful host and we think that she succeeded in that. Lorie was the bright spot in this post for what could be achieved. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet he regulars at this Post. We were very disheartened when a Global War on Terror Veteran was not the greatest representation of this post. It shocked us immensely. In the close to 200 posts that we have been to this member was a shining example of who we do not want at these posts. VFW Post 4499 in Manistee, Michigan was a beautiful place to visit on our bike. We could not have asked for better weather. We were shocked by the size of this post. Michelle and I toured the grounds and were amazed by the size of the parking lot and the large back yard with honor trees and a few places to hook up an RV. Inside was incredible spacious with a pool table, lots of military memorabilia and artistic custom tables honoring all the military branches. We have never seen tables like this before. We were able to tour the hall and meeting room. There is just so much space in this post! We want to give a huge shout out to Canteen Host Peg. Who was just an incredible person. She was very nice to us from the time that we came in until we had to unfortunately leave to go home. VFW Post 5065 – Sheridan Michigan We stopped by this post on a whim to see if it was open. It was not open at the time, but someone was inside. We were able to meet the Commander at the time Tracy. He was working hard in the kitchen getting prepared for the breakfast they were serving the next morning. Commander Tracy was so nice to let us peek around and answer our questions. When a post has more room on the inside than it looks like from the outside.. That is an amazing surprise. The upstairs hall is enormous by itself, with a full commercial kitchen and plenty of military memorabilia. That was just the beginning. He took us downstairs to another huge space. To say we were surprised is an understatement. The downstairs is host to 2 pool tables, dart boards, and auxiliary canteen. Post 5065 also has a food pantry in the basement they use to help support local families and the community. At one time this post was the largest Ladies Auxiliary and the 4th largest VFW in Michigan with over 1,600 members in total. VFW Post 5365 - Hobart Indiana This Post is one we have wanted to visit for awhile now. This is the home post of my uncle, and it did not disappoint. It was extremely busy due to a celebration of life that was going on. We didn’t get to talk to many people or take many photos out of respect for the family. And it was packed to the walls. What we did enjoy is that on a hot day, this post is the place to go. The interior is all rock and mortar, which keeps it cool. It has the “party basement” vibe which made it fun. The P.O.W. / MIA table is placed up on a ledge next to a gas fireplace. I can only imagine how cozy this post is during the winter months. We really loved the feeling of this being like your parent’s basement when all your friends are over. We were lucky enough to catch the name of the canteen host Lisa. VFW Post 2536 – Michigan City Indiana This former church turned VFW is so charming! We were greeted by Pam, who took time to talk with us about the post. She also told us of a few other things going on in the area the weekend we were in town. Pam truly takes pride in being a member of Post 2536 and it shows. VFW Post 2511 – Porter Indiana This post was a quick stop on the way to our destination. The hall was packed due to a Fish Fry dinner going on. We didn’t get to talk to many people, as the members were all helping with the dinner. We met Canteen host Nikki, and she was very polite but was also very busy. VFW Post 988 – Valparaiso Indiana Whenever we get the chance to visit posts in another state, we are always excited. V.F.W. Post 988 didn’t disappoint. This is a smaller post, but the people were extremely friendly and welcoming. The parking lot is a nice size, the banquet room is large, and the backyard is just as big. They have horseshoe pits and a nice patio out back. Perfect setting to just relax. The canteen host Lori was just superb. She welcomed us right away and made us feel at home. The place was extremely busy as they had the hall rented, a party in the canteen and it was a holiday weekend. As busy as it was, she was constantly coming over and checking on us and holding conversations. We would also like to give a mention to some of the regulars that were just as friendly and made us laugh so much. Thank you, Marty and her husband Bob, for all the stories, laughs, and tips for other posts to visit. Tory and Larry kept Nate occupied with swapping stories of their service. The laughter in the room was contagious and it's all because of the members that have become family. We absolutely LOVE this place and can’t wait to get back! VFW POST 671 – DEWITT MI We stopped at V.F.W. Post 671 and immediately had the, “This is going to be great” reaction from the parking lot. We usually trust our gut, and boy was it right! From the moment you open the doors, you are immersed in the history of the Post and past members. The P.O.W. / M.I.A. table is very prominent in the foyer which is always a reminder. We were immediately greeted by Canteen host Todd. He gave us a rundown of the post, and some of the history. We also go the chance to chat with Maurice who was a Desert Storm Veteran, and Barry who was a Vietnam Veteran. We always enjoy it when we get to talk to the members of the post. This post underwent renovations during Covid, and they hit the mark. A huge banquet room, equally large canteen with a pool table and plenty of seating for everyone. Great job V.F.W. Post 671! AMVETS Post 1988 in Baldwin, Michigan says its the largest AMVETS in the world. It has go to be close! We stopped in to this post from a suggestion from a member that we met in at the Cadillac AMVETS Post 110. This Post has a nice canteen area that is not to big or to small. But is very well decorated. It also has a axillary canteen room with lots of space. Then the large banquet hall is massive. With a fire place and larger display cabinet. AMVETS Post 1941 and American Legion Post 98 in Big Rapids, Michigan was a nice quick stop for us. This post we had to revisit twice. The first time we stopped they had an unfortunate event where the entire club flooded. But we wanted to try again. Thankfully we were able to revisit a little later. This post has a nice open floor canteen with plenty of space. They also have a really nice semi private outside area with plenty of picnic tables. Canteen Host and Commander of the AMVETS Sons Dave was wonderful to be the first person we met. He welcomed us right away and even gave us some of the history of the post and showed us around. We were able to meet a member named Cy. We had a great conversation about many topics in the Military Social Club Community. We do look forward to meeting with him again. And lastly we want to give a shout out to Wolfie. What an incredible person with a huge heart. We are also a follower of Gunnys Bunker on Facebook! AMVETS Post 110 and VFW Post 6864 in Cadillac, Michigan was a stunning train depot from Michigan's past. We were amazed by the old brick work and wood accents. This post was not very large but you could just feel the history inside. The building is right across from a beautiful lake and a deck that you could spend hours just watching the world go by. If your really lucky you will catch the train that crosses right in front of the post. Canteen Host Brad was just phenomenal and had us rolling with laughter the entire time we were there. He treated us like regular members and made sure everyone in the post felt welcome. Thank you Brad for all the great memories we made there. American Legion Post 528 in Alto, Michigan has always been a great time for us. This small hometown legion has an incredible history and down-home hospitality. It’s not the biggest legion but has one of the biggest hearts. The first time we came here was during a last-minute schedule change. As soon as we walked in we were welcomed and the regulars that were there had us rolling with laughter until last call. We are so lucky to have memories of Skip and his girlfriend Gwen. The times we stopped there; the post had a nice pool league group that was wonderful to watch. The Auxiliary was amazing to us and even invited us to speak about the resources we have collected to assist in getting help and filing paperwork to request DD214s. They also graciously donated enough funds to buy two gallons of D2 to clean military gravestones. We want to give a shout out to Miki the Canteen Host and Aux President. She has always been so supportive of our mission and what we are trying to do. Also, Larry and Jim for being incredible hosts. American Legion Post 412 in Bath Michigan While out and about, we discovered Post 412 hidden behind a long driveway. When we finally saw the building, we were excited to get inside and see what they had. This is a very nice building with many event options. The inside is nice and open with an enormous horseshoe shaped canteen. It was busy when we first got there, as people from a class reunion had all met at the Legion, so we dove right in. Stacy the canteen host was not only super sweet and attentive, but she was working her tail off. I was in awe of her multitasking of taking care of everyone, while still holding a conversation with us. The commander at the time was Leo, and he happened to be there as well. He told us all about the Post, and the amazing things they had been doing. American Legion Post 412 has additional space outside with a nice, covered patio and horseshoe pits. American Legion Post 287 Cedar Springs, MI We have been to this post a few times, and always have a great time. The parking lot is nice and big, the interior is warm, and the regulars are amazing. Down the back hallway they have many artifacts, and history of the post and the American Legion. Canteen host Barb was just spectacular. Her attitude, drive and kindness set the mood of the place. They have burgers that are to die for! Hand pressed, super juicy and very wallet friendly! One of our other favorites on the menu are the Tater Kegs. American Legion Post 260 Portage Indiana American Legion Post 260 had an amazingly huge inside along with an even bigger outside. The interior open floor design works great for many members to mingle and enjoy the atmosphere without being on top of one another. Every regular engaged in conversation with us and made us feel like we were members of their post. From the large banquet room to the backyard, we were in awe at every turn. Canteen host Debbie kept us there longer than we expected, as she was showing us all around and answering all our questions. American Legion Post 169 New Buffalo This Post is a MUST VISIT for everyone! If we didn’t live so far away, we would be here more often. The second we walked in the door, Brandy the canteen host immediately greeted us with a huge smile and the warmest Hello. Chuck, who is a member, asked if we would like to sit together and offered up his seat. Within the first 3 minutes we felt the “at home” hospitality. We started chatting it up with Chuck, and before we knew it our conversations included multiple members. This post and the members work hard and are extremely proud of their post, as they should be. During the pandemic, this post was remodeled, and man did they do a good job. The members came together to help with the grunt work, which also included building a deck among other duties. Post 169 has a spacious canteen, industrial kitchen, pool table and much more to offer. If you are in the area or looking for a day trip, we highly suggest visiting them. American Legion post 123 Kent City MI We have been to this post a few times and never gave a proper review. Post 123 is off the charts when it comes to hospitality! This post has a nice size parking lot, huge backyard with picnic tables, horseshoe pits and more. They are very proud to be part of the American Legion and it shows with every member you encounter. American Legion Post 76 – Ludington MI We finally made it to the Ludington post! We had heard so much about this place that we made a special trip for a visit. To say we were blown away by the hospitality, layout, and overwhelming welcome we got is an understatement! Canteen host Kim was on top of everything! She welcomed us right off the bat, engaged in conversation and just had an amazing positive attitude. Truly a great representation of the post. Once we looked around the post, we were still in awe. Every turn there was something else to see. This post is very proud of the members they have, and the members that made the ultimate sacrifice. It’s so beautiful to see they honored and truly still remembered and will never be forgotten. This post has so many amazing artifacts, stories and all-around character to it. We stumbled across this Post at 2949 South Waverly Hwy, Lansing, Michigan 48911 This building has 40/8 Post 946, American Legion Post 8 and American Legion Post 183. This beautiful post has little league baseball diamonds in the front and has a secluded country setting. Canteen Host Makayla was just incredible to us. While we were there. Tom and Nancy welcomed us in almost as soon as we walked in and invited us to their table. They answered all of our questions and gave us a tour of the post. AL Post 452 in Stanton, Mi completely and totally shocked us! This spacious post has everything we look for. Military artifacts proudly displayed. The amazing attention to detail to their POW table. With many artifacts about the post namesake. Post 452 is the only post that we have seen that has a child’s table set up dedicated to children’s sacrifices for having a parent in the military! I have been following Lakeview VFW Post 3701 for a few years now. The Commander is a true innovator in the VFW. The different ideas they are trying are a source of hope and inspiration to all of us that are trying to be the change in these Military Social Clubs. Lowell, Michigan Veterans Center and home to VFW Post 8303 and American Legion Post 152 was a nice visit. We were lucky enough to catch this Post open. It’s posts like these that are trying their best to provide their wonderful community with resources for Veterans. VFW 6132 in Lansing, Michigan was packed when we stopped! They had a pretty healthy pool league going on. They had three pool tables! There was so much ceiling and wall decorations that it took a while to take everything in. We want to spotlight Commander Lorenzo for being an incredible host to us. American Legion Post 52 in Coldwater, Michigan was just a phenomenal visit! Their open floor design and canteen lay out made it possible to include everyone in a conversation. There were many artifacts to look at and their collection of trophies from the past brought back the nostalgia of the military social club sports teams. American Legion Post 157 in Quincy, MI has an incredible looking building. It definitely gives it that private club feel. There are some great artifacts to look at and almost had a private VIP pool room! I loved it. But the real treasure here is the Canteen Host Keith. VFW Post 2406 in Charlotte, Michigan was a great stop on our travels. They had the perfect open canteen area that was the perfect size for including everyone in a conversation. They had a good selection of local military history and vintage military artifacts. The upstairs meeting area is great for any event and the down stairs area was equally spacious enough for many types of events. However we want to give a special shout out to member Tim “Boats” McDaniel! He was the model ambassador for the VFW and Post. He took time to play board canes with our son John and took time to share how he is getting the word out on providing Veterans with helpful resources. Amvets Post 1978 in Niles, Michigan is really grabbing the boot straps to make this a great social club! What we loved about this club is the love and dedication Commander Kari is putting into her club. It’s amazing how the Global War Veterans are really starting to take charge. Nick the State Amvets Rep was just an incredible host also. This club really does a lot for the community especially the children. They put on Easter egg hunt, car shows, Halloween and many other events. When we visited they had a great turn out for pool league. We stopped by American Legion Post 51 in Buchanan, Michigan for a short visit. They have an excellent little museum that is filled with some quality military artifacts that is very nicely displayed. Put this American Legion on your list now! Berries Springs American Legion Post 85 was just incredibly amazing to us and Our youngest John! First, the view was just incredible from the sun room. The post has a beautiful mural celebrating the armed forces and a pool table that they let John play on. The fire place and how it was made was just amazing. Berrien Springs is also home of Muhammad Ali! The Canteen Host even let John hold the famous boxers sword! American Legion Post 345 was a cute little post in the small town of Baroda. What their canteen lack’s in size is made up by the enormous hall and yard. The Canteen Host Bethan was just amazing to us. She had the small town hospitality and really made us feel like we were at home. American Legion Post 73 in Sturgis, Michigan was a bright spot on a day that started out rough. This post welcomed us in right away with open arms and the regulars instantly included us in their conversation. We want to personally thank Randy and Jim for giving us a tour of this incredible post. From the main canteen area to their ball rooms to the basement with antique auxiliary canteen. American Legion Post 105 in Benton Harbor was a nice place to stop in and visit. We were told about this post while visiting another legion post. This post is cash only. It has a nice open lay out design and makes it so everyone can be included in a conversation if you want. American Legion Post 568 was incredible! The hospitality of the canteen host and regulars was astounding! We loved the Cheers feel and Tammy took the time to give us a full tour. Regular John was made sure to really roll out the red carpet for the post in welcoming us. Kathy even helped us with our new destination. This post has so many amazing things going on. American Legion Post 411 in Hesperia, Michigan….. Wear have you been all this time! This American Legion sits in a quite little town, but don’t let that fool you about the people there. The moment we walked in, it was an eruption of greetings. This post has a newly redone back room, huge parking lot and back yard. One thing Nate and I always said to ourselves is that the people are the back bone of the establishment. Well Hesperia, you have set a new standard for us. This club has so many things going on for the community and helping raise awareness and funds. I can’t remember the last time I was laughing so hard! I had tears rolling down my face just from the first time conversation with complete strangers. Melinda the canteen host was on point with answering our questions. She even gave me the secret to getting the WIFI to work. Steve, Sally, Ted, Nancy and Kim were an absolute joy to spend time with. American Legion Post 331 in Bridgeman, Michigan we love you guys! This post has been turning into a halfway point to stop at for us on weekends. VFW Post 2326 in Grand Haven, Michigan your Host Tina is a saint! She has to be one of the most wonderful people we have met in our travels! This a gorgeous VFW inside and out. Huge open floor design with a private outside area in the back. Great place to escape the crowds that form up in the summer. VFW Post 7956 is set in a nice country atmosphere in Augusta, Michigan. This post had a nice cozy feel where everyone could take part in a conversation. It had the right amount of historical artifacts and current items from the gulf wars. This post also has a nice banquet hall for family events. American Legion Post 298 in Springfield Michigan you are doing it right! We stopped by on a Saturday afternoon , and were welcomed the second we walked in the door. This post has a massive parking lot, which they utilize for their Riders chapter and other events. Once you walk into the building you are in awe of the spacious bar, and immediately greeted by the post members. The Oscar Brady post has a full kitchen with menus, banquet room and plenty of seating inside. They proudly have a display honoring Oscar Brady himself. It’s always great to see the history of the chapters on display. We want to give a very special shout out to Josh and Joey for taking time to talk to us. These two are what true ambassadors should strive for. We all swapped ideas, and helped them with brainstorming for the post. Also, we would like to say thank you Jack the bartender who kept us hydrated and gave us a rundown on the kitchen. VFW Post 5855 and American Legion 207 in Portage, MI was a nice spot to stop by later in the evening for us. This post has been on our radar for a while and finally were able to stop by. I’m a sucker for military artifacts and loved seeing them on full display here. I want to personally thank the Bar Host Brian for being incredibly nice to us. VFW Post 1855 in Dowagiac, MI was one of the most unique buildings we have been too. Beautiful stone structure with updated inside. We caught them as they were having an indoor corn hole tournament with plenty of room. The back yard was very peaceful and downstairs could hold a nice size group. Penny the host reminded me of that small town hospitality that you do not see very often any more.
