We arrived in the dordogne yesterday, here is a sketch that I made today. It kind of embodies what I like to do in painting which is reveal beauty in the ordinary. This painting depicts a shadow on stubble in the corner of a wheat field and what pulled me to the subject was the colour trapped within in the shadow and the saturated golden intensity of the stubble. I haven’t made a post for a while as I’ve been busy in the dordogne. I have been hanging a selection of my French paintings in a Biannual exhibition where I was the guest artist ‘ invité d’honneur ‘ at the Théâtre de Périgueux. Twice a year in spring and autumn I spend a few days walking with a group of friends ( usually up mountains) this year they agreed to walk-in the Dordogne, so much to the bemusement of the ‘ Sociiété des beaux-arts du Périgord ‘ I walked the fifty kilometres from Bergerac to my show ! Many people came to the opening and I was asked to make a speech to a fairly full very large auditorium in French. I had an inkling that this might happen so I’d put together a small speech in my head over the walk there as a back up plan. I basically attempted to say that my work was not just about painting light but about painting shadow and the light within the shadow which I sometimes call ‘ trapped light ‘ this is what gives the paintings their vibrancy. Anyway it was pretty nerve racking as my French is very ‘ Malade ‘ as I called it. This is part of a small series of work that I am making about the ‘ golden hour ‘ well more like golden twenty minutes at dusk in the dordogne. They are similar views to ones that I painted two years ago , but that series is all in my kitchen and it’s such an inspirational time that I thought I’d make some more to release into the world. I haven’t made a post for a while as I’ve been busy in the dordogne. I have been hanging a selection of my French paintings in a Biannual exhibition where I was the guest artist ‘ invité d’honneur ‘ at the Théâtre de Périgueux. Twice a year in spring and autumn I spend a few days walking with a group of friends ( usually up mountains) this year they agreed to walk-in the Dordogne, so much to the bemusement of the ‘ Sociiété des beaux-arts du Périgord ‘ I walked the fifty kilometres from Bergerac to my show ! Many people came to the opening and I was asked to make a speech to a fairly full very large auditorium in French. I had an inkling that this might happen so I’d put together a small speech in my head over the walk there as a back up plan. I basically attempted to say that my work was not just about painting light but about painting shadow and the light within the shadow which I sometimes call ‘ trapped light ‘ this is what gives the paintings their vibrancy. Anyway it was pretty nerve racking as my French is very ‘ Malade ‘ as I called it. Two 6x9 gouache studies on natural carton. One painted at the lake at Besse, the other on a trail above Correns. After careful articulation of proportions, I find I can let go and make rhythmic strokes that express how it feels to be here. Hope you can feel what a cloudy, windy day it’s been.
We arrived in the dordogne yesterday, here is a sketch that I made today. It kind of embodies what I like to do in painting which is reveal beauty in the ordinary. This painting depicts a shadow on stubble in the corner of a wheat field and what pulled me to the subject was the colour trapped within in the shadow and the saturated golden intensity of the stubble.
