Well I had an amazing weekend at Japshow with Outlawjapclub - but unfortunately without the car. Once the engine was back in and bolted up I noticed the drivers side manifold was just touching the chassis leg - I knew I couldn’t leave it because as soon as I started and drove it, that would vibrate, bang, and crack. Which meant removing the manifold, chopping it, clocking the 90 deg bend by 10deg to lift off the chassis leg; and re welding. Time I just didn’t have in the schedule - Which put me on a little downer. However I got on with that Friday by undoing that side engine mount, lifting the engine, using all sorts of spanner combinations to undo the bolts, and removing the manifold. I cut and re welded it and it’s all back fitted again. Back to where I was before - ready to make the downpipes. I’ve also finished the water system, filled that the best I can till the engines running. Fitted the transmission cooler and filled that with oil. So far no leaks. Manifolds done! Well almost - I need to take the left bank off and drill the hole for the exhaust temp sensor but that shouldn’t take too long. Alternator back where it’s staying for now. Cam belt covers all back on. All spare studs removed and replaced with bolts. Got the panel to make to cover the centre of the cam belt. Two more old ports on the water neck to get welded up; and fit the oil feeds. And heat wrap everything. An amazing weekend at Japshow with Outlawjapclub. Car was brilliant driving down and the welding repairs seem to have done the trick. Just need to sort the cruise control PID on the Link ECU Thunder. However on the way home - about 15 minutes from home on the M6 - I heard an almighty bang under the car and something spinning off into the hard shoulder. I immediately anchored on and pulled over. The engine note hadn’t changed, and all readings seemed good. I checked the engine bay and couldn’t see any issues, however as I got back into the car I noticed the drivers side skirt was missing! It’s a one of a kind real carbon fibre visage skirt so I took to the grass and went and grabbed it from the hard shoulder behind me - expecting to only find bits of it. However much to my surprise it was intact! With only a bit missing where it had ripped off the back of the car, and a scuff at the front where I assume it first hit the road. At some point the front fixings must have come out, then the wind got behind it and ripped it off. So tonight was about repairs, I removed the rear fixing from the car, and then with resin, fibreglass, and reinforcing with carbon fibre it’s all back together. - it won’t be perfect, but you can’t see it behind the arch. The front scruff is at the bottom so again patched with carbon. I will trim and sand when dry and add a little lacquer. Not much updating recently. The new coil overs are on and I packed the car up for Japfest. Had an amazing weekend with Outlawjapclub there. In terms of the car, it felt like it had a misfire part way through the journey there. A check of the plugs had cylinder threes tip a little stubbier than the others. Swapped over at the show and seemed spot on going home. However again part way through the journey the “misfire” noise re appeared. Got home and plug 3 looking different to the others again! Signals checked and both injector and ignition seemed to be working, but I replaced the ignitor anyway. Also did a compression test and everything was looking strong!? Finally got chance to take it out today and it was perfect initially but again developed the noise when warm and under load. Visions of rebuilds were flashing around my head - so I headed off the my mates garage to ask for an opinion (it’s hard to load the engine on the foot brake and listen inside the engine bay at the same time on your own lol). Thankfully they quickly reassured me the engine sounded good and it sounded much more like a crack in the left bank manifold. So next job is to get the passenger manifold off - this does mean lifting that side of the engine slightly to get it out. And then check for welds and repair! Other than that the other jobs I identified on the trip were minor. Car went out for its first proper test drive today. Here’s the quick rundown - Firstly it wouldn’t run and kept stalling - I had been messing around with the antilag settings in the Link ECU - will have to have another play as once I turned that off it ran spot on. Second thing I noticed - I haven’t put the steering wheel on straight. That should be a simple fix. Nor have I plugged in my phone cable so it doesn’t connect to the stereo. The main couple of bits to work on are - the car is hitting some form of limiter about 4.5k rpm. I didn’t have the laptop on to see what it was. Certainly wasn’t boost or rpm though. Secondly the down shifts on the auto box are really harsh when slowing down. I’ll adjust a couple of the pressures in the Spitronics Micro Ignitions cc mercury2 TCU to sort that. To help with the future I also need to adjust the PowerTune Digital dash so that it flashes up the limits if they are hit - should be simple to set up then I’ve been given advice on how I can simulate the signal to test it. Continued to crack on. Both left hand heads are now stripped and the good one is at Lancaster Engines to get the none pitted inlet valves lapped in, plus a light skim to give a fresh surface for the headgasket. The right hand head is off and ready for me to fit the uprated valve springs - this had a light skim when I last had it off a couple of years ago so should be good. The majority of the time tonight was spent drilling the exhaust manifolds and preparing the pipe work for fitting the SAS valves. The bank thermocouple ports are now drilled and tapped, both holes are made and the pipe work has been notched to weld on. Just waiting for my new Milwaukee Tool UK M12 die grinder from Powertoolmate to tidy up the holes before I tack them. Well Christmas is over, I got a few new tools so it was back into the garage to use a few. This is how the evening started and ended…. Now the wiring is sorted I moved onto the engine work. First job was to mark up where I want to fit the Mitsubishi SAS valves and the full bank thermocouples. Once that was done it was on to removing the passenger head to replace it and fit the Brands Hatch Performance uprated valve springs. Honestly it would probably have been easier to remove the whole engine, but I really couldn’t be bothered with messing with the transmission, exhaust, etc under the car so I went with removing the heads in situ. Turbos and downpipes needed to come off first to access the timing belt. A few choice words were used in the process, but the first head is off. I’ll also start on the new inlet manifold whilst it’s off. Working on a different car to my own today. The Lexus IS200 Turbo I rebuilt a while ago had an issue with its Link ECU G4+ Storm. Working with #linkecu we upgraded it to the latest G4X Storm. I painstakingly transferred the map across from the old version, but when he tried to fire it up it wouldn’t go! I remotely logged in, but without being able to do some other physical checks I ran out of ideas. Thankfully with a bit of help from the Link forum it was suggested in the X software that’s the base timing had been reset to zero. Arrived at the car today, adjusted the setting and BOOM it fired up straight away! After that it was just a case of checking with the timing gun to get it spot on as we were sorted. We did a couple of other minor jobs whilst we were there - but one very happy owner! This car is an extremely well built example with great attention to detail. The wiring slog continues. The alarm is now fully rewired and back working as it should be. I was going to get a new one, but I’ve found and fixed all the niggles with this one so alls good. All the drivers side wiring is now sorted and tidy. Next job is to connect up a few bits to the PDM and ecu, then that should allow me to tie back up all the passenger side! Another evening doing wiring on the car. Tonight I focussed on tidying up the wiring loom under the passenger wing, there was some excess wiring from old parts, and I’ve also simplified the headlight wiring and connected it up to the Hardwire Electronics PDM - another relay and fuse combo gone! Yesterday evening I started by commoning up quite a few of the PDM outputs. The PDM15 allows you to see and log the currents being drawn. When I’d checked this it appears I’d been quite conservative with the separate outputs. Putting a few of the lower draw ones that simply power up the ecu, TCU, and sensors freed up some of the outputs so I can add other circuits. I’m just waiting on some braided sleeving to finish this off. More bits arriving for the winter projects! Unfortunately a bout of man flu kept me from cracking on this week, but I’ll be back at it asap. Firstly some Funk Motorsport heat sleeving arrived for the coolant pipe work to the interior heater. Again part of my quest to reduce cabin temperatures. If it’s anything like as good as the manifold sleeves I have then it’ll work a treat! Other arrivals are some drills that should cope with stainless. 1 generic hole saw, and 1 Starrett UK one. Plus a DEWALT pilot drill. I’ll need these to drill my manifolds so I can weld on some additional pipes and flanges to fit the Mitsubishi Evo anti lag valves. Not something I plan to use much, but a cool little engineering and design project regardless. A friend of mine did the CAD of the flanges a while ago. The idea is that the inlet to these is fed by the charge pipe work before the throttle, and feeds its directly into the exhaust manifold. This only happens when the throttle shuts and the vacuum in the manifold opens the valve. The turbos are still spinning so producing airflow and that is forced directly into the manifold to keep them spinning! I've just reached 2K followers! However recently I appear to have an influx of random profiles so not sure if the last load should count as they look like spam accounts! However Thank you for continuing support. I could never have made it without each and every one of you. 🙏🤗🎉 In terms of the car - mods have kind of started. My laptop was extremely old and slow so I’ve comendeered the wife’s very under used one. Now I don’t have to wait 15 minutes for it to fire up so I can make changes/review settings. Just need to create a nice mount for it on the passenger side. I’ve updated the Hardwire Electronics pdm to the latest software. That was a bit of an annoyance as some of the settings didn’t transfer across so I had to correct them - all done now though. Dash out is the next job - get all the wiring bits I want to do sorted whilst it’s still warmer. That’s the Yakushi Show smashed and car is back in the garage. That’s my last show of the year for the car so more mods will begin shortly! One I need to research is speaking to Zircotec about what’s the best material to stop some of the engine bay heat coming in to the cabin. A great weekend at the Outlawjapclub meet at Rebel Classics. The car was excellent with a few little rides out included. Though the power steering fuse decided it had had enough and popped. Think itd just got to its limit as I was manoeuvring into place. Also decided I need to get some heat sheeting on the firewall - it was hot! I think I’ll speak to Zircotec as they have some amazing products for this purpose. Next up is Yakushi Show! Still awaiting the new valve springs to arrive so the head build can wait till after show season along with the new inlet manifold. Another night doing small jobs. First was adjusting my oil cooler mount. It wasn’t quite right and pushing the front bumper out a bit. So some gentle adjustment with a hammer had the bracket sitting better and the bumper fitting spot on. I’ve left the bumper off for now though as I’m awaiting a new wideband sensor. This is about the 5th sensor for the passenger bank I’ve had since fitting the engine. I’ve had them from reputable companies, and also through eBay and they just don’t seem to last. I’ve checked all the wiring, including voltage and resistance and it matches the driver side. I’ve adjusted the boss on the downpipe so it angles the sensor more downward to prevent moisture. It sits in the same location as the drivers side in terms of gas flow - but still they fail. Though oddly the drivers side has been working happily for many years - it was the one I had in the old 1ggte engine as well. This last one has lasted 11 months and was an equivalent part number of the drivers side one. I had ordered that again, but it arrived and didn’t work from the start so that’s been returned and refunded. Now I’m waiting for one that’s the exact same part number as the driver side from a reputable place and for a bit more money - we’ll see how it lasts! For reference the part number of ones I’ve had fail are 0 258 017 123, 0 258 017 052, and the most recent was 0 258 017 237. The one that’s on the drivers side is 0 258 017 025. Then I’ve swapped round the wideband readings on the dash, as they were on the wrong sides (left was right, and vice versa) and updated the map for the transmission based on a bit more logged data. Next up for me is a meet at Rebel Classics in a couple of weeks with Outlawjapclub. Went off again tonight to Bridge House Tea Rooms Classic Car & Bike Events 2022 at Bridge House Farm Tearooms. Was absolutely rammed! Another great local event. This months was motorsport themed so some nice motorsport cars including single seaters and rally cars. I saw a couple of cars with an interesting feature as well - injector controlled boost control. Not a lot to report recently. The car is running good so I’ve left it be. I have planned a new strategy for the #daviescraigwaterpump. I currently use the Hardwire Electronics pdm15 to run it using PWM based on water temp. However after watching the High Performance Academy video I’m going to try a times on/off process to see how that works. Few jobs recently - first I found some great pictures of the car by using the Facebook reg search feature. The guy who took them very kindly sent me some high quality originals - very grateful for that. I’ve also updated the PowerTune Digital dash to the latest version. Encountered a problem with the CAN link once done - but excellent live support from them got it back Uk and running asap. Also finished trimming the rear. I have modified the standard ski hatch panel and shortened it right down so it looks presentable. Continuing with the interior theme I’ve sunk the Spitronics Micro Ignitions cc transmission display into the dash and angled it towards me. This should make it look more like it belongs than it did previously. Final job was to start to wire in a couple of thermocouples for the exhaust manifolds. When I change the heads I’m going to drill and fit a thermocouple on each bank - will just help with more data into the Link ECU Thunder which can take two thermocouples direct. Unfortunately I only had three link pins left in my box so ordered up some more for the final wire. I’m also holding off changing the heads. The rattle can be managed and doesn’t affect the running of the car - and I want to save up a but and get some uprated valve springs from Brands Hatch Performance. New door cards made and covered in interior cloth. Nice and simple and clean. The doors already have poppers fitted on a hidden switch under the arm rest, so I don’t need the handles etc. Additionally I’ve hidden away the required parts of the window switch so they still work from the front switch panel. Also started trimming the rear area, just started gluing the base and will work my way up. Short night in the garage this evening. A mate came round to change the stem seals on the head of his silly stripped out Vauxhall thing, so whilst he cracked on with that I got on with making some door cards for the rear doors. I’ve recently stripped the seats out and will just trim the rear area with appropriate cloth, so it seems pointless having a proper door cards there as well. Nice wooden template made from some old ply - it will be held on with standard Toyota clips which makes it simple. I’ll now order up some alloy material to transfer the template to. Once the Vauxhall head was done, it motivated me to do the passenger side head for my own engine. So stem seals all changed on that and back together. New head gaskets, cam seals, etc are ordered and should be here at the end of the week. However I won’t be starting change till after a local car meet next week. Decided I will change both heads as I’ll have to take the cam belt etc off anyway. I’m going to fit some thermocouples to each bank of the exhaust as well whilst the manifolds are off. An eventful weekend! I was all set for an amazing time at modified nationals with Outlawjapclub however when I set off the stereo had stopped working! Unfortunately whilst cutting a cable tie to try and fix the issue I did myself a fair bit of damage! Not fun. Then when driving to the show the car has developed a ticking noise that rises with load and revs. I think it’s a valve bucket again so I will have to have a look under the cam cover and see what I can see. It may be a case of replacing that head with one of my spares. I have found the issue with the stereo though - when I removed the rear seats and seatbelts - the main earth for the amp was previously attached to the back of a bolt for the seat belts - obviously when I removed them it wasn’t earthed anymore! So that’s fixed at least. I plan to recover the rear bench with sound deadening cloth to tidy it up.
