Yoda was such a handsome, sweet boy. Each year, when we see our pet portraits on the Christmas tree, we think of the funny little traits of each fur friend. Super happy to see this smiling silver face today! Vasco returned for his 3rd vinblastine injection to treat his bladder cancer. When we first saw Vasco, he had to wear a diaper all the time because he would dribble urine constantly, so it was super exciting to walk into the exam room and see him 4 weeks after starting treatment with no diaper on! Vasco is no longer dribbling urine or straining to urinate when he does go outside to pee which is exactly what we want to see ❤️ His owner, like many others, was initially very hesitant to start treating Vasco because he was worried that the chemotherapy would make him sick all the time and that he would have no quality of life. This is a big hurdle that we face in educating owners that it really is not like that with our pets! They tolerate chemotherapy very well and it often has little (and if it does, it’s very short lived) to no impact on their quality of life. Beautiful girl Lucia came to visit us yesterday. She was nervous at first, but warmed up to us pretty quickly. Lucia has a form of cancer known as inflammatory mammary carcinoma. Lucia was adopted from a rescue organization a couple of years ago, and presumably, wasn’t spayed until later in life (she is 12 years old now). Intact (not spayed) female dogs are at an increased risk of developing mammary cancer. This is due to the fact that ovaries produce estrogen, which is involved in the development of the mammary glands. Having your dog spayed before her first heat cycle will not 100% prevent the development of mammary cancer, but it does decrease the risk exponentially (0.5% risk if spayed before their first heat cycle VS 26% risk for females spayed after their second heat cycle). Unfortunately, for the form of cancer that Lucia has, surgery hasn’t been shown to provide much improvement in prognosis. The reality is, that sometimes we do have to say goodbye. We knew when we saw Little Jack last week, that goodbye was probably coming soon, but we didn’t expect it to be this soon. We were heartbroken to learn that Little Jack’s owner had to make the devastating decision to say goodbye to him on Monday. We had been treating Little Jack for his lymphoma since August 2020. That is an AMAZING 18 months. This little dude was a fighter! Because we saw him so often (sometimes weekly for months at a time!) Little Jack became a favourite of many people in the hospital, not just the oncology team! This is Jag! Jag is a 6 year old golden retriever who we have been treating for lymphoma since the end of October. Jag was very poorly when we first started treating him, but we have noticed more and more of an improvement in him every time we see him and we get to see more and more of his personality. Recently, we figured out that Jag can do a bunch of tricks and when we mentioned this to his owner, she informed us that Jag is in fact, a Champion Trick Dog 🏆 and an agility star! We got Jag to perform one of his fun tricks for us today (JAG get your bowl!) to share on our Instagram. We also recently have been told by a few clients that certain behaviours their pets do when they come in to see us are usually only things they do when they are in a relaxed environment, which makes us so happy! We try very hard to make every appointment as easy and stress free as possible for every one of our patients. Sandy came in to see us today for a follow up ultrasound after having surgery to remove a thyroid tumour. Sandy is a bit of a nervous boy, we had to carry him into the hospital. We are lucky because our oncology office is out of the way of the hustle and bustle of the hospital, so it is nice and quiet. We also use other tools to help with the nervous patients including a variety of different treats, yoga mats if they have difficulty standing or walking on our tiled floors and calming pheromones. This handsome fellow is Rigby! Rigby is a 9 year old Portuguese Water Dog who initially presented to our oncology department in June 2020. Rigby was referred to us after radiographs were taken by his regular veterinarian after an off and on lameness of ~3 months and he was unfortunately diagnosed with osteosarcoma of his right distal radius. Rigby eventually went on to have his front leg amputated and received a full course of chemotherapy.
