Me Made May - Day 30 Something with trim. I haven’t made anything with trim but here’s my second #sagebrushtop with a ruffle, and that’s kinda similar. I’m also wearing my just-finished #helenejeans in 11.5oz rigid denim from @drapersfabrics. I cut these jeans a size up from my previous ones and they’re super comfy. I spent ages learning about the #topdowncenterout fitting method only to realise that these jeans side seams don’t change between sizes. I did do a rough one legged toile with a waistband which helped me make the decision to size up. I tried adding rivets to the pockets but the top keeps popping off. What am I doing wrong? I’m using the @kylieandthemachine jeans hardware set, and I’ve tried hammering a mallet, normal hammer and even a brickies hammer. No dice. Now I’ve got one rivet back poking out of the coin pocket with no top, the back is sewn into the pocket facing so I can’t even remove it easily. The one rivet that is holding firm is all rough and keeps scratching my arm. Aside from that, I’m looking forward to watching these age and fade with time. MMM Day 29: Favorite fiber. The fabric of our lives. This top is linen which I love wearing but absolutely hate sewing. Cotton is my number one. Denim, seersucker, and corduroy are probably my favorite ways to get it. I realized I don’t actually have much seersucker or corduroy and what I do have has already been shown. What I don’t need is more jeans, but I can’t imagine never sewing another pair. I’m so over doing this but only a few days left. Cinderella goes for a picnic 🧺 That’s how I felt in this powder blue #vikisews_paulina dress with the most delicious puff sleeves you can imagine. Ive been wanting to make this dress for the longest time but since this is a part of their sewing courses I could never justify the price. But luckily @vikisews had a spring sale so I was able to get it cheaper. It’s still more than I would have liked to have spent especially since the dress doesn’t have any complicated techniques that need a course, but it turned out to be one of my most favorite #memadedress of all time. I think the skirt is especially flattering and to me this seems like it would look great on all sizes since the puff sleeves and a line skirt really give you an hourglass shape (I’m shaped more like a breadstick 😅). I ended up taking 2cm out of the sleeve gathers because it seemed like a little much and it ended up being perfect. I used a @mindthemaker faded blue poplin from @materialistic.cz and it was the perfect weight to give the sleeves enough drama and the skirt enough volume. ANTHEA BLOUSE Influenced by pretty much every sewist on IG, I finally made this blouse. For this project I used entirely new materials and really wanted to get it right so I wouldn’t wreck or waste this beautiful print. Birds flying freely together. Makes me think of the strength of community. It took a few attempts to get the sleeves where I wanted them. The first version was too wide. I used casing and elastic on the second attempt. Finally, I just shortened the band and brought the gathers closer together. That did the trick. For the placket I used selvedge instead of interfacing (see last photo). We’ll see if it stands the test of time. #MeMadeMay Day 27! I wore one of my #BlommaTank s and a pair of #GSBalboaShorts for a hike with Joel. This is my second pair of these shorts, which I actually made last summer except for topstitching the waistband. I wore them once and quickly realized they needed topstitching, so they went back into the to do pile until I finished them this morning. It took 5 minutes 🤦🏼♀️ just took me forever to finish. I believe I made a D graded to an E at the hip, but I lengthened the elastic to be about 2 inches longer than the pattern calls for if I remember correctly. It was just a bit too snug for me! MMM Day 27: Something that took forever to make. This top took so long. I couldn’t understand how to construct the bust cups so I put it away for months. I started on it in Omaha and finally finished it after moving to Santa Fe. I’ve since made this pattern one other time and it’s now clear that i made this one “wrong” but it works just fine. #dreamfrocktop These jeans are feel like a constant work in progress. I first installed the zipper too low. I later ripped it out and reinstalled it but way more poorly than I had before. I think I ripped it out and did it once more? It functions, but it looks so messy. Maybe I’ll try and fix it yet again or maybe I’ll leave it alone. #adamspant I cut this collar out and it sat for weeks. #OkayMeMadeMay: this took forever. This is the #CloudBowDress knit in @craftmeknotyarnco Legend of Zelda yarn. It took a very long time. Gotta say, though, the dress is not important. Having a really hard time justifying posting my little photos on here today when there are much bigger things happening and I have very little power to effect any change. But photos make this algo work (kinda) so I can use this to talk about something else. One of the things I can do is to try and support people who have bigger platforms. @matthewgreenndp is an MP here in Hamilton and he is an incredibly outspoken and inspiring policitian in a place where those folks are few and very far between. He is drafting a private member's bill called the Nakba Bill as it is "therefore critical for Canada to re-assess its role and potential complicity in the ongoing violations of international law in Gaza, as well as the ongoing violations of international law in the illegally occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem." Participating in the extensive consultation process made me feel like I was able to contribute in some small way and have my voice heard, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing and hearing more as the bill is drafted. I would encourage you if you are feeling defeated or frustrated or angry or stressed to find one small thing today you can hold onto to get to the next day. I know here in Canada at least that I haven't found many policitians who share many of my values, but here is a short and incomplete list of folks doing work that is making a difference: federal: Matthew Green and Leah Gazan; provincial: Sarah Jama and Jill Andrew; local (which is SUPER important): Cameron Kroetsch and Nrinder Nann. I don't want to be annoying and tag them all here but they're here and they talk about the efforts underway to make the city, the province, the country better. Find your folks, support them where you can.

We had a really fun weekend up north! Great food, great friends, and even had a bonfire! :) I wore my new linen #clobiasskirt with a shirred top I painstakingly made years ago. I think this top was waiting patiently for this skirt to get her first ray of sun. I've never wore it before, because I couldn't figure out how to style it, and with this skirt I think it's a match made in heaven! (Not to be dramatic or anything 😄) Shirring is not especially hard, but it's tedious and doesn't always work... you have to figure out your machine setting, so it's a bit of a trial and error thing. After wearing it though, I do feel like making another one. The pattern is so easy... you just cut a rectangle double your waist circumference! Easy peasy! This outfit was also day 25 of #memademay2024 Can't believe may is almost over!
Day 25 #memademay2024 Today's #okaymemademay prompt is "a make that feels like art". It's a work in progress garment though. I used the #siadress pattern by @marsha.style. I've had my eye on this pattern since it was released but only just bought it a few years later. The main fabric is the Kaufman Painterly Petal Lawn Summer - such a pretty painterly floral print. And the lining is a sheer tangerine lawn which gives a nice pop of color. The pattern itself is really beautiful with some lovely design details. Combined with this artsy fabric, it's definitely giving art vibes. Can't wait to finish it up! #austinsews #sewistsofinstagram

#OkayMeMadeMay: something about art. I don't think of anything I've made as art, really. Craft, yes, but not art. Anyway, this is a bit of an artsy outfit, I suppose. The fishnet shirt used to be a dress but it got ripped, so now it's a little cropped layering piece. Vest is from my sister's defunct clothing line. Pants are actually a halter top romper thing I made years ago (why? Not sure I ever actually wore it). Anyway, decided to just wrap the bodice and straps around my waist and now they're pants. Ans then because it's cold and rainy, I put on a sweatshirt to go get groceries.

MMM Day 24: Something that doesn’t get worn often. SO many of my makes don’t get worn often. I’ve been sewing long enough that my style and skill level has evolved significantly. There is a definite emotional attachment to things I’ve made and it feels difficult to let them go. So my closet is filled with not-so-wearables. Here are two examples: This tank is an old oldie and is overall very messy. The lining flips out so bad but I probably didn’t understitch it. The hem is just zigzagged which honestly doesn’t look awful but, damn, it’s lazy. Pure white is not my favorite color to wear nor are spaghetti straps. It’s #rheadresshack with an added ruffle. These pants are constructed well but are just a little too skinny for my liking. They’re in a popcorn denim that must be like 6-8 oz. So light and not in a way that I prefer. They fit well except there is some tightness in the inner thigh that’s always been there, like maybe I forgot to stretch it while sewing. Who knows. They’re #philippapants. It’s really windy today and I truly almost fell over taking these. . . . #okaymemademay #memademay2024
It's already day 24 of #memademay2024. Today's prompt for #okaymemademay is something that doesn't get worn often. If this top looks familiar, perhaps you recall seeing it in dress form in my original post about it last year. That dress, the #m7948dress in size 8 to be precise, was my second sewing project ever and I was pretty proud of it! But I never really found myself reaching for it bc it just felt like kind of a lot to wear. So today I decided to whack off the bottom and voila, we have a #m7948hack. It feels a lot more wearable this way. The bodice part was my favorite part anyway, and now I don't feel like I'm drowning in this print. I did add one pocket to the dress and I just decided to leave it, so the top comes equipped with one little impractical pocket shown in the final pic lol. I just prefer separates I guess and this dress just feels a tad too fancy for everyday wear, with the belt and all, although I really love the shape. I made a size 22 but had to shorten the center front, you can see how I took a wedge out of it on the video, I didn't bother to resew the skirt to the bodice so the wedge just stays there. Fabric is a rayon linen blend, it's very comfortable to wear. Hey, it’s another #memademay2024 #okaymemademay #memademayfat post! Fewer outfits this time because I genuinely didn’t leave the house much. Hopefully I will have some fun stuff before the end of the month - my favorite makes tend to be the more ridiculous ones and there hasn’t been much opportunity to wear them this month. Fingers crossed though. Or maybe I’ll just play dress up in the alley. It’s been a while since I’ve done that. 1. This is a skirt I made from some ancient flocked taffeta back when I was convinced I was going to sew through my small stash and then only buy fabric for the specific project I was working on at any given time. That, uh. Didn’t happen. OH WELL. 😆 No pattern - I just made a waistband on the crossgrain and then used absolutely all of the rest of the yardage to make the gathered skirt. Also it has side seam pockets. Also also I got that blouse in a @tuesdayofcalifornia mystery box and loved it but never could make it quite work. So the other night I over dyed it - goodbye bright tomato red, hello deep wine shade that was a surprise but I’m so into it. I also had to fold the cuffs over because they’re a little big and I didn’t get around to moving the buttons. I think I’m going to wear it all the time now. 2. I don’t remember why I got dressed this day but that’s another self-drafted skirt - this time with pleats and a ton of a mini pompom trim I don’t even remember buying. The typewriter fabric is the cotton linen blend from @rubystarsociety and it’s so so good. I used to have button covers that were images of typewriter keys but I kept losing them, alas. Also this shirt is the @cashmerette #carlyletshirt and I cropped it a little too aggressively but that square neck is a dream. I should make another one probably. #OkayMeMadeMay: rarely worn. I used to wear this @sewliberated #StudioTunic more often, but I don't reach for it as much as I used to. It's a great pattern, just maybe not as much my style as it used to be. This fabric is an absolute beast to sew, and absolutely not what is recommended for this pattern, by the way. I was a tester and I quite often use something from my stash that pushes the limits of the recommended fabric just to see if it will work, and some results are better than others. This patchwork denim is very thick and in some places there are a lot of layers so it was tricky to work with. The pockets are amazing, I think I fit a bottle of wine in here one time when I was carrying a bunch of stuff to a friend's for a potluck. Anyway, I believe this is a size 14 or 16, it's been a while and there are more details on the grid (somewhere). Worn with a Georgia Tee that is a little too cropped but oh well. Also, desperately fighting the urge to cut my hair today, I'm not loving it but I also kind of want to grow it again so I am willing myself to jusf live with bad hair for a little while but oh my God today it's hard.

#MMM day 24 and it’s a repeat outfit. Not because I have nothing to wear but because I fixed the dress! that’s right pocket fans #ithaspockets! I also let out the shoulder puff and it is now perfect!!! I am so happy I don’t want to take it off. I was wearing and that fabric was pulling me in so I thought - right I am going to fix it. I added sort of welt pockets (with lots of drama and unpicking) and then I unpicked (so painful!!) the bias on my sleeve heads and let the gathers out and added more bias to it. the result is this perfect summer dress that will be in heavy rotation once the sun comes out to play. super chuffed with it. I had to patch the pockets with some other fabric as I only literally had scraps left. so here you are - it is fixed thank you sewing friends for convincing me to give this another go. Me Made May - Day 24 I missed yesterday. Solo parenting for the week wore me out and I couldn’t be bothered to get changed out of activewear. I’m back today with something that rarely gets worn. The #patinablouse I made for my dear Oma’s funeral. It reminds me of that and I feel sad when I look at it, so I don’t wear it. I always remember what was going on in my life while I was making something, all my clothes are like time capsules that way. I do love this top though, the #naniiro linen is gorgeous and shape of the collar is so perfect. I never wear it because it feels precious and my lifestyle isn’t that gentle. It’s pretty unfortunate to keep such a lovely top locked away in a cupboard, I’ll have to make more of an effort with this in future. #okaymemademay #mmm24 #memademay #memademay2024
#OkayMeMadeMay: out of my comfort zone. The #NikkoDress was out of my comfort zone in terms of things I wear. I'm usually in oversized or weirdly shaped things, and I rarely wear anything form fitting. But I love this dress and its variations as layering pieces, and even on its own it feels like a grown up dress. Fabric is vintage from @empiremakespace. The vest is definitely out of my comfort zone in terms of thing I make. I'm usually a "whip something together" kind of person, not a meticulous, taking my time kind of person. This #Aquilegia vest from @taukomagazine took a long time, and required a kind of focus I don't use all the time in my sewing practice (even though I probably should). But it turned out well even with my struggles and I'm really proud of it.
Me Made May Day 23 — I’m revisiting some previous #okaymemademay prompts bc the remaining ones don’t speak to me. Today I’m wearing something that I made a mistake on — the Clo bias skirt from @soften_studio. I made this skirt last October, and it was such a frustrating project that I never posted these photos. But I’ve emotionally recovered now and ready to wear it again. Most of the frustration was my fault: I attached the waistband to the wrong side of the skirt *TWICE* and had to unpick the stitches from this rather unforgiving sandwashed cupro. Then I accidentally sewed a safety pin inside the casing and only found out when I broke a needle sewing over it. And THEN I discovered that the waistband casing was too small for my elastic (last photo). I still do not understand what happened with the elastic. Last photo shows the elastic width stated in the instructions, and it’s much too wide for the casing. I checked the pattern pieces and the elastic should fit just barely with no extra space. I used what I am 99% sure are the correct seam allowances to attach the casing and triple checked my printing scale, but there is no way this elastic would fit inside. In the end, my solution was to create two channels in the casing for two rows of much smaller elastic. It ain’t perfect, but it works. Despite all that, I actually really love wearing this skirt. The bias cut gives it a beautiful movement, and it is super luxurious in this sandwashed cupro. I want to make another version in linen, and next time I’ll pay closer attention to the waistband construction. Wish me luck! #CloBiasSkirt #MeMadeMay #MMMay2024 #MeMadeMay2024

MMM Day 23: Something out of your comfort zone. I knew this top was out of my comfort zone aesthetically. I don’t like showing much skin, but I loved how simple and architectural it was. What I didn’t know is how out of my comfort zone the construction would be. This pattern uses the burrito method to attach the lining. I actually love this method now, but my lacking spatial intelligence made it challenging to wrap my head around at first. I had to enlist the help of a friend to make it make sense. I don’t wear this much but I DO have matching pants. These jeans were out of my comfort zone because it was the first time I mashed two patterns together. I didn’t know how it would work (and I don’t toile) so it was the happiest surprise when they turned out exactly as I had hoped. . . . #okaymemademay #memademay2024
#okaymemademay day 23: out of my comfort zone. Well, a jumpsuit was the first thing that came to my mind since it's a one piece clothing item and pants, two things I don't wear much. But as I explained the other day, jumpsuits and babies are a bad combination so I chose this very new @deer_and_doe_patterns #ddhysope. First, it's cropped and sleeveless, which isn't generally what is recommended for fat bodies, but I love this kind of top when it's warm, especially since the washed cotton from @rijstextiles is super comfortable to wear. It's also way out of my comfort zone sewing wise, since I'm a really lazy person, and six buttonholes + buttons for a simple top is crazy, but it just looks sooo nice and polished. I made a size 52 with no mods. #memademay2024 / #okaymemademay day 22 My most recent example of something I made inspired by a garment I saw on someone else is this @grainlinestudio Archer shirt, which was 100% inspired by @carolinesomos Olya shirt I saw on the @blackbirdfabrics web listing for this exact yarn-dyed woven cotton fabric. I already have an Olya shirt with a contrast striped front yoke, so I thought it would be fun to make a short sleeved Archer with a similar contrast stripe yoke feature. Details for this make are in my previous post about this top, but suffice it to say that Caroline’s Olya top lived rent-free in my brain until I finally made this top for myself! Worn with my @sewliberated Estuary skirt & Crocs sandals.

MMM Day 22: Something you saw on someone else and had to make. I think probably most of my ideas for makes come from seeing them on others. But this is basically the dress that started it all for me. It’s an #m7969. At the time, it felt like every sewist had made one. I fell in love with the enormous sleeves and the deep V. I think I initially sewed the sleeves on backwards or maybe didn’t mirror them? Since I made it, I’ve shortened it several times, added pockets, and finished the seams (lol). #OkayMeMadeMay: saw it on someone else. Surprise wfh day because Henry came home with a migraine yesterday and he needs an extra day of recovery (and Steve went home with him yesterday so it's my turn). This faux jumpsuit outfit is dedicated to two of my fave sewing people: @cocosbeforebros and @minimalistmachinist. Rachael is the first person I think to show me these Style Arc #BobPants, and she had shared Coco's versions, which spurred me into trying them. The rest is history, I'm probably on eight pairs of these pants and they are my faves. The top is directly inspired by Coco, because she had drafted this tank for herself and I gushed over it, so much so that she very generously traced her pattern and sent it to me! I've made a few and have also used the pattern as a base to draft a whole bunch of other stuff. Both Rachael and Coco have truly inspired me to start thinking outside the box a bit, sewing things I love and experimenting with shapes and not just making whatever the new thing is, because most of the time that's not really me. They're both genuinely lovely, thoughtful people and I'm glad to know them. Also shoutout to @stephaniedoig_edits for the sunscreen rec, no makeup (other than eyeshadow and mascara), just very glowy sunscreen.
Me Made May - Day 22 Remember when everyone was making Ogden Cami’s all the time? I made this #ogdencami way back when I started sewing, in early 2019, because I wanted to copy everyone else. I bought the tencel fabric on my very first trip to @wearethefabricstore. I had no idea what I was doing in there! I hate how you can see the lining through the main fabric, I hate the feel of it and I don’t particularly love the pattern on me. A good example of following what everyone else is making without thinking about whether I would actually wear it or if it suits me. I'm back! It's Me Made May, Day 21 🌞 I disappeared for a while to attend an incredible multi-day embellished textiles class with @jenniferareis and now I'm finally slotting back into #mmm2024. Pants are the @annaallenclothing Persephone Pants made out of a gorgeous yarn dyed woven from @blackbirdfabrics. I knew this was going to be a tricky choice for a bottomweight pants pattern, but it came together with lots of staystitching. This is a size 14, and fits quite nicely as a midrise, but it's drafted to be a high waisted pattern. Next time, I'll make this in a heavier weight and take in about 1.5" using darts for extra shaping. I love this fabric, but the lighter weight isn't meant for holding stable at the waist. I knew that when I chose it, but I just really wanted this as a pant 😛 I also did the often suggested mod of a line of stitching between each button in the fly to hold it down and reduce bulk. #memademay2024 I’m catching up a little but haven’t remembered to take pics each day. This was Sunday when we visited Paterson Great Falls National Park in New Jersey. These falls are right in the middle of a built up small town which is kind of surreal and rather strange too! In 1792, Paterson was established as America’s first planned industrial city, centered around the Great Falls of the Passaic River. I’ll post some more pics of the Falls in my stories. These canvas Pietra shorts were the first pair of @closetcorepatterns Pietras I made two years ago and I lived in them that Summer! They’ve been with me on some lovely adventures and they make me think of when my mom visited us almost two years ago. Her and I had such a fun day in Manhattan visiting the Rose Main Reading Room at the NY Public library and The Morgan Library and Museum. My comment to my mom in one of my videos says it all “Mom look at this place!!! 🤯🤩” I made this pair in a canvas, I think it was Ruby Star. But unfortunately they have faded quite a lot.
