Borja captivates her audience with an inverted and luminous palette that she meticulously honed through her affinity for color blending in acrylic. Her works evoke sincerity, solace, and warmth. Borja artfully weaves elements from children’s stories, constructing wide-eyed characters that skillfully convey a sense of melancholy and grief, creating a unique and enthralling artistic experience. Through her art, she imparts the importance of optimism, serving as a constant visual reminder to look beyond the surface of adversity and keep embracing the brighter possibilities that lie ahead. A graduate with a BFA in Advertising and a former multimedia designer, Borja’s artwork has made its mark, gracing numerous exhibitions and art festivals both in the Philippines and in international scenes. Galerie Stephanie is proud to present the works of Jem Magbanua for 𝐀𝐫𝐭 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐚𝐧 from May 10 - 12. 𝗝𝗲𝗺 𝗠𝗮𝗴𝗯𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮 received her BA (Hons) Fine Arts from the LASALLE College of Arts, Singapore (in partnership with Goldsmiths’ College, University of London). Her practice is grounded firmly in drawing and explores how places and people shape each other’s conditions through the merging of points between movement and stagnation; naturalness and artificiality; and comfort and displacement. Magbanua completed several artist residencies in Japan (Studio Kura, the Daison Animation Project, and the Itonami International Festival). Apart from exhibiting in the Philippines, her works had been featured in exhibitions in the United States and the Southeast Asia. Magbanua works and lives between Singapore and Manila. #WorkOfTheWeek: Nunzio Paci narrates his observations on the congruencies of human and animal behaviors, questioning the complexities and growth between the two. A lot of human weaknesses are cleverly juxtaposed in the sweet and bright elements surrounding the subjects, where the painting entitled “Flexitarian” comes as a prime example. The two mockingbirds present in this particular work hints the primitive instinct of survival that leads to cannibalism where upon close observation, one would notice one of the birds (with the deformity of a plant’s branch extending through its beak) was being eaten by the other one. Born and raised in Bologna, Italy, Nunzio Paci (b.1977) paints with the eye of a doctor and the hands of a painter. Painting in the tradition of Baroque and Renaissance, Paci’s works are faithful to life, from anatomy to colors, and meticulously composed. But his works depicting flora and fauna coalescing and unraveling easily come across as dissections, too, cutting open and exposing the flesh for mutation. This artistic practice enables Paci to parse contemporary scientific and ecological issues.
