Day 22 of #meetthemaker: Positive My controversial take: “Don’t Worry Be Happy” is the anthem of toxic positivity. I hate this expression. I heard it all of the time growing up. Along with “It is what it is” (ugh! Don’t get me started on this expression). It’s an empty thought-terminating cliché. It’s what people say to bookend a difficult conversation or when nothing constructive can be said. Thought-terminating clichés are used in cųlts to quiet critical thinking or recognizing that something doesn’t “feel” right. What “Don’t Worry Be Happy” does is negate and invalidate one’s negative feelings. It’s not a threatening message—unless you are like me and live with chronic anxiety and depression. I struggle with imposter syndrome—I get bogged by the fear of not liking what I make or not selling my creations or not completing a project. I struggle with time management and prioritizing tasks, which brings up feelings of frustration. When I struggle my fear of failure overshadows my passion. Instead of living an unauthentic life, I try to live out of spite. I create things despite the odds. I know that I won’t be “internet famous” and have thousands of followers, have non-stop custom orders and sales. If you have read this far I feel positive about chasing my dream. The gotta-do’s, the must-do’s, the nice-to-haves, the “I’ll come back to this later” projects. That’s just not how the creative brain works. Or at least not my brain. What things are higher priority? Is it more important to do things quickly to get them out of the way or do things correctly which may take more time? How does one split up the creative drive (making things for upcoming shows) with the administrative tasks (photographing the finished items, retouching the photos, post them online, use hashtags and SEO to reach new people)? Or maintain a website? Or drink enough water? Those were made by artificial intelligence, scraping the internet of other fiber artists’ work and what AI thinks that a certain prompt would look like and cobbles together something that defies logic, physics and basic needle-art techniques. I carefully make everything by hand. If a particular skein of yarn doesn’t have the exact properties that I am looking for, I cobble things together as well. Did you know that a frog can’t keep its eyes open when eating? Frogs do this when they are consuming prey. According to the American Museum of Natural History, “When a frog swallows food, it pulls its eyes down into the roof of its mouth. The eyes help push the food down its throat.” Neat, huh? The head and tail are from @happyberrycrochet and the body was from Rao the Hangry Tiger by @haniscrochet Hook 🪝 3 - 3.5mm Yarn 🧶 The base purple color was Big Twist Comfy in Purple Jam (purchased at my local @joann_stores). The light purple details are made with Stitch Studio by Nicole Pound of Stitches acrylic yarn in Lovely Lavender. The black tips of the ears and the nose were scrap black yarn. Eyes 👀 12mm Stuffing ☁️ stuffed with poly-fil and scrap yarn Modifications 🛠️ I wanted to make the plushie the same size as the other plushies. I used the pattern from Rao the Hangry Tiger and increased the needle size (I think it was a 3.75mm). The Big Twist yarn was made up of 8 strands. I took apart the yarn so I had five strands of the dark purple. I split the light purple yarn so it had three strands instead of four. With the goal of ending suïcïdė among LGBTQ+ teenagers and young adults, The Trevor Project provides crisis counselors to LGBTQ+ youth that seek out their help. With each sale of an LGBTQ+ identity bee and rainbow keychains, I donate a portion of the proceeds to The Trevor Project. I even had customers donate additional funds for The Trevor Project. For the soil of my succulents I only use brown yarn for the top half and use whatever color scraps for the bottom. This project is a first for me: my first Cthulhu (shocking all of my ooky spooky friends, I bet) and my first time using multiple eyes for an amigurumi piece. I followed the pattern from the designer. I think next time I will make some tweaks on the placement of the eyes and maybe make the wings and mouth tentacles a slightly different teal/green to make it easier to see the details. #marchmeetthemaker Day 9: Trial & Error 🤫 You wanna know the “secret” to making anything creative? . . . It’s not being afraid to make mistakes, make modifications, experiment, and try stuff out. Sometimes your vision of what a final product should look like may not be in line to the pattern that you are following. As a crocheter, I pin parts in place so I can visualize the finished product. If I am not in love with a certain part, I pivot towards something else.
