It was constructed in 1915 as a pumping station for an agricultural experiment that pumped water out of Lake Mattamuskeet, creating rich soil for farming purposes. The experiment failed, and the pumping station was later converted into a goose hunting lodge. Although the lodge closed by the end of the 1970s, it remains a charming relic from the past.
