It’s the second week of our Power of Prayer series! The book of Acts records the true story of the apostle Peter’s miraculous jail break. Having been put in prison for teaching the good news about Jesus, Peter slept chained between two soldiers and awaited trial the next day. In the meantime, “the church prayed hard to God for him” (Acts 12:5). God answered the prayers of His people for Peter and sent an angel to set him free! Immediately, the chains fell off Peter’s wrists. He put on his clothes and sandals and followed the angel past the guards, out of the prison, and down the street. When Peter showed up at the door where God’s people were gathered praying for him, they didn’t believe at first that it was really Peter! It’s been nearly 2,000 years since that night, and God has not changed. When we pray for others, God hears us! We're nearing summer, and for some of us that means finding space and time to hit our favorite beach or vacation spot -- that place that feels like peace and rest the minute we walk through the door. Do you have a place like that? Or maybe you have a space closer to home that, that when you step into it, you sense the presence of God. I have several spaces like that. One is a trail near my house. As soon as my foot falls on that trail, I breathe easier. My brain stops racing. I hear Jesus better. It's a holy place. �In this week's Genesis passage, we get to visit Bethel, Jacob's holy ground. We can feel the goodness of God as Jacob encounters Him there, and we too, can hunger for that space where God shows up. I hope you can say that Mosaic is one of those places for you. And I hope this Sunday, as you step into worship and hear the Word of God, you (like Jacob) can say, "Surely the Lord is in this place!" First, can I just say thank you? I am so grateful to our church family for allowing me time away to welcome our newest edition to the family. Raymond Pierce came into the world on March 30, and holds the record for being the chillest, most laid-back kid in the world. It has been a joy to care for him and his sister Emmie while my daughter acclimates to her new life as a parent of two. Thank you for giving us the gift of time together. We treasured it. Now it's back to Genesis and what a story to jump back into! So much of life is about waiting and wrestling, and the stories we'll explore on Sunday personify that part of our humanity. It is Jacob waiting for Rachel, and Rachel struggling against Leah. It is Rachel waiting for Joseph while Jacob wrestles with God. It is Jacob and Esau both wrestling with each other and waiting for peace. All that waiting and wrestling is not wasted on God. These stories teach us how God uses the waiting and the wrestling to move our lives forward. And they hold a Messianic thread that will run from Jacob to Jesus. I can't wait to unpack all these stories and lessons with you on Sunday! This month, KidCity will discover what it means for our lives to be transformed to be like Jesus through the Holy Spirit at work in us! Our series begins with Jesus appearing to the disciples and giving them the Holy Spirit. But one disciple isn’t there—Thomas. He has trouble believing that Jesus is alive again until Jesus comes to the group again when Thomas is present to show the scars on His ha�nds and feet. Not long after Jesus’ resurrection, a man named Saul sees a bright light on his way to persecute followers of Jesus. This encounter changes Saul’s life. He goes out and tells others about Jesus, including the leader of the island of Cyprus and the Roman emperor, Caesar. Along the way, Saul encounters a magician and a fierce storm on the sea. There is nothing we can’t do when we have the Holy Spirit within us to show us how to live and to remind us not to fear when trouble comes our way. We are never alone and it’s possible for every part of our lives to be transformed when we trust in Him. On the traditional church calendar, this Sunday is Palm Sunday -- the day we remember Jesus' triumphal ride into Jerusalem before his death. That story, told in all four gospel accounts, is a rich mix of celebration and death. People greeting Jesus as he rides into town are caught up in the thrill of the moment, having no idea that in a matter of days, this same man will be hung on a cross and left to die. They don't know him as a supernatural king, even if he has told them so. It is a scene full of irony. Meanwhile, back in Genesis, this Sunday we encounter the deaths of Sarah and Abraham. Like Jesus, their deaths are underrated and their legacy stories not yet fully appreciated. And like Jesus, their deaths usher in a new generation of God's people. This week in our journey through Genesis, we find ourselves in the thick of Isaac's story and one of the most famous scenes in the Old Testament. Usually, this story is referred to as Abraham's test of faith, but surely this is Isaac's test, too. What Abraham and Isaac both lay up on the altar is faith. And greater faith is what they take away from what was undoubtedly the most critical moment of their lives. After taking a three-week break to do some very awesome things (anniversary celebration, Epic Day, church-wide retreat ... whew! That's a lot!), we are back in Genesis. This week, we jump into two strange stories, but this is exactly what makes Genesis so good. It's so real. The writer never tries to gloss over the hard moments in our history. There is no attempt to tie everything up into neat little bows. No, actually, in Genesis we get to see God and his people in all their raw and unfiltered glory. This week is no exception. Genesis 19-20 reminds us that God will often deal with people in ways that don't fit our usual categories. He is both holy and patient, fear-deserving and loving, knowable and mysterious. KidCity begins a new series this coming Sunday... RISEN! On Sundays in March, KidCity will explore the concept of resurrection and new life throughout all of Scripture. God has always been the one to offer and bring restoration after the results of sin and brokenness takes hold. Jesus shows us what God is like when He comes to earth! He raises Lazarus from the dead—calling for him to come out from a tomb. And Lazarus walks out! Others realize Jesus is the Messiah and not long after that experience, Jesus enters Jerusalem, where He is praised as King. Through Jesus, we can receive new life too and be saved from all that is sinful and wrong in this world. May this series about rising again give you and your kids hope.
