How do you celebrate accomplishments you take particular pride in? Everyone I know that worked on the design, construction, and fielding of the MK VI Patrol Boat has expressed a sense of pride in this boat, and gratitude to have been a part of it. This boat was the first major project of my career, and I had the privilege to be the lead Naval Architect for SAFE Boats International (@safeboats ) alongside a team of designers, project managers, construction supervisors, craftspeople, and boat operators. And I was able to build mentoring relationships with folks both at SAFE and from Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (@nswccarderock ) that I cannot express enough gratitude for. Thus, this drawing is my way to combine my love of drawing and my pride in this boat. My hope is that if this boat was part of your story in any way, that seeing this drawing allows you to remember and celebrate with me. “Leading the Way” 11”x14” graphite on smooth Bristol Prints available soon. First installment of WIP Wednesday! Starting a new project that’s near and dear. (If you know, you know; if not, that’s for another time.) This is the MK VI (Mark Six) Patrol Boat, often just called MK VI, or 78PB (in Navy circles). This was a significant vessel when it was built as it had been 20 years since the last “Patrol Boat” of this size, the last being the MK V (Mark Five) Special Operations Craft for US SOCOM. But for the last vessel with a similar blue-water “Patrol Boat” mission one has to look to the late 1980s and the MK IV (Mark Four) patrol boats. So when the MK VI program began, it had attention even up to the level of the Chief of Naval Operations. Future posts will share some of the interesting aspects of this boat that I’ve gathered from online- so make sure to follow along if you’ve got an interest in the small(ish) boat side of the Navy! #mkvipatrolboat #usnavy #navy #navyboat #patrolboat

I did something new with this drawing. It was the first drawing of this kind that I ever gave away. 🫢 I made this piece as a gift to celebrate the career of a friend and mentor. The two boats in the image were both boats that he was involved in during his career. Added to that, the Mark 5 (MKV) at the bottom and the Mark Six (MKVI) at the top represent the “changing of the guard”. Just as one generation of boat passed to another, they represent the passing of leadership and responsibility from one generation of engineers (my mentor’s) to the next (my own). It was an amazing experience to be able to present it to him- it was a total surprise, and he was completely blown away. It made it worth all of the time working through the most minute details. The best part? I didn’t know what the picture would mean - the idea of the changing of the guard- until I was nearly halfway through. But it was that message that was just as impactful as the work itself. “The Changing of the Guard” 11”x14” Graphite on medium surface drawing paper • • • #boatdrawing #shipdrawing #gofastboat #maritimeartist #maritimeart #navyart #mkv #mkvsoc #mkvi #mkvipb #mkvipatrolboat #pencildrawing #nauticalart #pencilart #pencilartist

Can you name the boats? Curious to see how well known the Navy small craft world is… Work-in-progress. This drawing was made as a “retirement” (to a different job) gift for a friend and mentor. Now that he’s got it, I can finally start sharing about it! Stay tuned for more- it’s one of my favorite works so far. • • • #boatdrawing #navyart #mkv #mkvsoc #mkvi #mkvipatrolboat #maritimeart #maritimeartist #shipdrawing #marineart

. #usnavy #mkvipatrolboat #NavalNews #FuerzaNaval
