To wrap up my week of Central Utah vacation photos, I have something special for all you history-lovers, you before-and-after types. Only this time, the story is from my personal history. We biked a trail along the Sevier River, starting at the mouth of Marysvale Canyon and riding as far as The Big Rock Candy Mountain. Yes, it's a real place, and it's in Utah! But it's clearly not the anarchist, alcohol-soaked hobo's paradise depicted in the song. They do, however, have a gas station that sells old-fashioned candy cigarettes and bubble gum cigars, so it's not *all* squeaky clean Utah out there. Anyway, right before you get to the mountain, there's this campground along the river with all these old train cars that have been converted to vacation rentals. As soon as I saw them, I had a flashback to a road trip I'd taken long ago that passed by this very spot. I remember stopping to take some photos, so when I got home from my trip, I searched through my digital archives until I found those old photos. And when I saw the date, I couldn't believe my eyes: I had photographed this boxcar exactly 14 years and 364 days since I photographed it again last weekend! Photo 1: 5/18/24. I composed this photo as I would an urban scene, creating geometric blocks of contrasting color, texture, and origin (nature or human). Using an 85mm lens to compress the space in a tight crop, I invoke the feeling of being in the city, surrounded by buildings that block out the sky. With so much of the frame showing the man-made landscape, the viewer, for a moment, might even think that the mountain is actually a painted backdrop. Photo 2: 5/19/09. Long before art school, my photo philosophy was much simpler: if it looks good, shoot it. And this rusty, graffitied boxcar in the middle of such pristine nature looked good to me. Though all boxcars look the same under a fresh coat of paint, I figured out through historic satellite imagery that the rusty boxcar in this photo is the very same unit as the blue boxcar in Photo 1! Photo 3: 5/19/09. A different boxcar and my friend Aaron's 1981 Porsche 924 that we traveled in for our Utah national parks road trip. Good times!
