Day 146/366: Sun crossings Once again I return back to my favourite type of photo. The sun crosser… Even though I’m super happy with this shot, it made me realise once again that a lot of it is down to luck. After years of trying, the weather was finally on my side. I’ve been coming to this bridge too many times to count but finally there were no clouds on the horizon. I also thought I was in the right place but as @ireland_aviation_ showed me, where you stand makes a big difference. He was standing literally 20m to my right and got the full plane going through the sun whilst I only got half a wing. I’m still counting it but it’s just humbled me once again proving I don’t know everything… The reason I decided not to move was because I had mounted my camera on a tripod for the first time in a while, but I’m definitely regretting it. Having the mobility of shooting handheld could have made the difference to a good shot to the “perfect shot”. The only tip to take from this post is to keep trying. Learn from your mistakes and try again when you get another chance.

London City April 1995 and the unique Business Air 146 arrives from Frankfurt. The mid nineties were an interesting time at London City as airlines came and went, trying to work out what the holy grail of routes were from the airport that would deliver long term profitability. Business Air operated a fleet of Saab 340s from Scotland, but gave the airport a go with a solitary 146 that flew between the airport and Frankfurt. Although the service didn't last long, Frankfurt, with its banking industry and worldwide connectivity has since become a key destination for the airport. #londonairport #londoncityairport #londoncity #londoncityphoto #londoncity🇬🇧 #lcyphotography #lcy #cityairport #lcyspotters #businessair #scottishairline #airlinenostalgia #airlinehistory #bae146 #bae #bae146ineurope #bae146200 #bae146lovers #146200 #quadjet #quad #airlinerphotog #airlinerphotos #airlinersdaily #airlinerworld #airlinersofinstagram #airlinerphotos #airlineraction #airlinerphotography #airlinerlovers #aviationlovers

Day 6/366: PANNING level 2! Well done, you've all graduated panning level 1! Thanks for all your feedback and advice so here's some more info to digest!  I don't think I made it explicit but panning is most effective when shooting in LOW LIGHT or at NIGHT (photo 1 & 2). This is for two reasons - Your camera/lens won't be able to capture enough light at a higher shutter speed - There are often lots of Airfield lighting behind or in front of your subject (floodlights, taxiway lights, terminal building etc which will appear as blurred lines at night!  So here's how I setup my camera: 1) SHUTTER SPEED. Start at 1/60 for commercial aircraft and 1/250 for fast military jets and lower your shutter speed when you're comfortable you can stabilise the camera.  2) APERTURE. At night, go as WIDE as you can to allow as much light in. If your lens can go down to f/2.8 or lower, it will let in around 4x as much light as f5.6 (I've learnt the hard way but it makes a huge difference) 3) ISO. Generally keep your ISO as low as possible to reduce noise in your image (this is because the camera artificially increases the exposure of the image). However, with newer mirrorless cameras and AI denoise in lightroom and Topaz, you can get clean images up to ISO 6400 (or higher depending on your camera) If you want to pan during the day  1) Reduce your ISO to the minimum (around 100-200) 2) Set your desired shutter speed (as above) 3) Increase your f/stop as far as you need to reduce the exposure of the image   4) If you wish to keep using a wide aperture (to create a shallow depth of field to blur your foreground and background), use an ND (NEUTRAL DENSITY) filter which work like sunglasses for your lens! So here's a few examples at a fairly wide focal length on my full-frame camera  Shot 1) 70mm, 1/8s, f/2.8, ISO 1600 Shot 2) 50mm, 1/10s, f/2.8, ISO 800 Shot 3) 300mm, 1/125, f/13, ISO 100 Shot 4) 24mm, 1/25, f/7.1, ISO 100 Let me know what you would like to learn about next?

I don't usually like to shoot in rain, but here it created an interesting effect which softened the city backdrop behind the plane. Anyway, now that I'm back in the UK I'll be trying to get through all the photos and videos I've taken over the past few months. Took over 10000 photos and 1 hour of video whilst I was in Japan alone, so it could take me a few years at this rate rain😂😂

"Helvetic 465 flight of two, cleared for take off runway 27, wind 260/13." If only this was the case... What do you think is going on? I can only imagine the scenario here, but my best guess is the Falcon's flight plan had expired or was subject to ATC restrictions. It subsequently vacated the runway, only to take off a few mins later after the @helvetic_airways e190-e2 pictured here. I know you're suspecting some photoshop trickery but the only fake thing out there is you doubting me... 😂

This one goes out to our wonderful host @onemoreweektogo and @aerovincenzo from our evening at LCY! Here's to more memories like this at YVR

Words can't really describe the scenes of that fateful evening. All I can say is it was that much more special surrounded by some wonderful friends and like-minded people. And when I say like-minded, I mean they were also willing to sprint around like headless chickens to get the "shot". Me and @dmairplane definitely worked up a sweat for that second shot but I just love the rainbow reflecting off the body with those giant E2 engines...

I don't like reusing photos but now that my editing skills have improved, I thought I'd edit one of the images from my favourite sequence of all times. Enjoy!

So I'm gonna be honest, I'm digging deep into my archives atm. I'm busy studying for my final ATPL exams next month so I'm unable to go out and snap some fresh shots until then. Anyway, here's one of my few remaining LCY shots all the way back in pre-covid times.

How much do you wanna go to LCY (swipe for all the answers): 📷1) Sheesh get me here ASAP 📷2) A LOT 📷3) Not a lot... I think by now it's obvious how much I love LCY, particularly during sunset. But here's proof that even overcast days can be great for spotting! Hope you guys are having a good week so far...
