By 1988, Bob Umbel was the key master at Cedar Crest. He'd collect session fees, maybe see you a Coke, and had ultimate control over dragging the chain. He's also one of those few that were peripheral to the East Coast Toke Team. He flew the colors and towed the line, but I don't think he was ever ON the East Coast Toke Team. Hey everyone... I'm back. Things are getting a little bit tense in my cancer fight, but I am also working to make sure there is more Lapper content coming your way during my upcoming hospitalizations. This photo of Tony Magnusson was taken on the Monday following the 1986 N.S.A pro contest that was held at Mt. Trashmore in Virginia Beach. We stopped at Cedar Crest on the way home to find that Tony Magnusson @hstreetskateboards was there ahead of us and getting his first big dose of steel heaven. Jeff Phillips had won the contest in Virginia Beach, but there's no doubt that TMag was at the center of a lot of conversations about how to judge REALLY big airs against a complicated variety of tricks. There's really no question that the height of Tony's airs were pushing limits that hadn't been pushed before. I was not prepared to shoot another session. Particularly so, because it was getting later in the day and the batteries in my flash were dead. When my father and I purchased the Lapper magazine business, over 35 years ago, we were given most of the paper, submissions, mechanicals, mail, and other assorted materials from the original Lapper headquarters. In my personal photography collection, the @gbj_photoworks collection, there seems to be one roll of film I had developed, about which I know NOTHING. Well, I don't know "nothing"... I know I didn't shoot this roll of film, and I know the people on it are John Fudala @johnfudala and Brian Mank @manksk8u. I don't know who shot these pictures and I don't know the ramp. All I can imagine is that this roll of film somehow came to me, undeveloped, and fell into a bag of other undeveloped rolls. It must have come from the old Lapper HQ. This is the first time this photo has been seen by anyone but me. Therefore, I'm going to leave it up to John and Brian to tell me more. Skateboard photography... I've always approached skateboard photography like a wildlife photographer. That means I go to the places where my potential subjects congregate, observe their behaviors, discern patterns in their activities (if there are any), apply any previous experiences that might tell me more, and then get shots I can use. Rarely, if ever, do I tell a skater what I want to see or "work on getting" something with a skater. Back in the day, this was a way to burn a lot of film, but also freed me up to catch little, gem-like moments, like this one here. I guess my point is that there aren't any other attempts to capture this moment on the roll of film. It was just a moment of everything coming together. This shot of Sam Boo @boosamh really looks like something pretty amazing. In reality, it was a quick little bunny-hop to axle, caught at the ideal moment. In my head, this bank at the PEPCO Bowl has always had a name. No one else would remember, but the name is based on the first graffiti painted there. Oh, was I mad? I was never really a fan of graffiti, particularly on a spot bound to be seen by someone who would think we shouldn't be there and might be able to do something about it. The whole thing seemed like inviting someone to throw us out. I was pissed. Nonetheless, my buddies painted something on each of the walls. I know Logan was on one of the walls and Bahne (I'm pretty sure the first graffiti went down in the summer of '75) on another. I can't remember which was which, but I can definitely tell you that they painted the word "Radical" on this wall. Forever after, this wall has been the "Radical Wall". There weren't many times, over the years, that the camera got pointed at me. I have Sam Boo @boosamh to thank for this one. This was my lipslide spot. Doing this again is a major motivator in my cancer fight. I already posted these photos, last year, but they obviously apply to what I've been doing lately. So, here we go again. Not only is it Sam Boo @boosamh on that wall during our deep dive into the PEPCO Bowl, but it may also be one of the best sequentials I have ever shot. Make sure you see all three. The thing about a proper frontside boneless is trying to get both feet back on the board as high in the launch as possible. Sam has that down. The thing about doing a proper frontside boneless in this particular location is that the more Sam travels toward the camera, the sketchier the landing. This moment remains memorable as one of the Sam Boo ankle tweaks, to which I was a witness. He landed it and then got PEPCOed. Since the driveway is also gated at the entrance, I think the PEPCO employees got tired of this second gate decades ago. While we're here... Now, back to our deep dive into the PEPCO Bowl. The PEPCO Bowl (in Olney, Maryland) is an odd structure. Not really a bowl, per se. More like a spread of drainage gullies coming together at one point with walls, some off-camber, between them. Over the years... almost 50(!)... Most of the action has taken place on the wall to the left of the pipe (and just out of this picture). It was Keith Lenharr @klsk8, shown here doing backside air to 50/50 over the channel at Tobin White's ramp in Fallbrook. In that same car was Dan Brown @danbrownskateboarder, Backwards Bernie O'Dowd @sk8boardingsaves, and Steve Villarreal @global_skate_life with the camera. Although all of them have moved around a lot, over the years, I think they all originate in Pennsylvania and that some of the friendships go all the way back to that time. Back in the 80s, Lapper became a team of contributors that kept us in touch with much of what was going on in skateboarding at the time. I wish this were the case today. Lapper is always looking for serious contributors, who might be proud to see their video/photography/art/writing be attached to the Lapper legacy. All we ask is that you let us publish it first. The very first "event" at the Cedar Crest ramp, when it was brand new in May 1986, was the Go for Broke Jam. The ramp had only been skateable for about a month, but, even without the internet and cell phones, the news traveled fast and most of the East Coast skate tribes would be represented. Dave Lemieux made the trek from somewhere in New England and brought a deep bag full of invert tricks. I had to figure out how to reach down to shoot a Good Buddy. This also returns us to the legendary East Coast Toke Team. Now, some memories are indelible. This is Dave Tobin at the Goshen Ramp in Gaithersburg, Maryland. It was either November or early December of 1985. Tobin, who was sponsored by @brandxtoxic, told me that while I could take his picture, that day, I couldn't show them to anyone. All of this was because he had broken a board and had to set up on a borrowed Powell-Peralta board. I'm guessing the statute of limitations is up on that one. For me, what was amazing about watching Gonz skate vert was that, while he was actually on the ramp and crossing the flat, he seemed to be skating very slowly... Almost impossibly so. Then he'd get to the coping and produce the biggest ollie-bonk I'd ever seen. My mind had a hard time comprehending what I was seeing, and I certainly was not aware that I was seeing the future. This is the 7th Most Liked photo of 2023. This is Tim Whistler @[17841408059769113:@timwhistler], who was/is known in skateboarding history as "Puker". The photo was taken in the summer of 1985, about a year and a half after Puker had put the East Coast Toke Team on the skateboarding map, by nabbing the cover shot for Thrasher's October 1983 issue. It wasn't until many decades later that it occurred to me that Puker only skated vert. He had to tell me, and then I remembered not seeing him at ditches, mini ramps, or street set-ups.
