It was a great evening paddling School Section Lake! We saw Red Necked Grebes, Buffleheads, American White Pelicans and muskrats. We also saw a floating nest that belongs to a pair of grebes. The aquatic nest had several eggs inside and the water was clear enough to see how it was anchored into the lake bottom. Next weekend we will celebrate FREE fishing days and National Trails Day! . . . #lakemetigoshestatepark #lmsp #ndparks #ndstateparks #ndstateparkselfie #letsgometigoshe #bottineau #kayaking #kayakingadventures #getoutside

WOW - What a great weekend the Wild Outdoor Women had in the great outdoors. This weekend we had roughly 115 ladies at the park learning new skills, gaining confidence, trying out gear and meeting other enthusiasts. We laughed, learned and shared many stories. We got out on the trails and shorelines to xc ski, skishoe, snowshoe and hike. We learned basics of walleye fishing, practiced fur handling with muskrats and mink, tied flies, made custom built antler handled knives, speared fish, created journals, painted mini landscapes, made a variety of teas, learned about winter birding, tasted grouse, baked bread and so much more! We also managed to get some ladies to visit our friends at the Bottineau Winter Park to take in some tubing and downhill skiing! Thanks to all of the ladies that registered to spend some time with us at the lake this weekend. We are so grateful for the volunteer enthusiasts that continue to share their time and talents by teaching classes. It’s also amazing to have the support from other organizations and agencies that share common goals, including North Dakota Game and Fish Department, Pheasants Forever North Dakota, and ResiliOak. Thanks also going out to our local Starion Bank and SRT Communications for supporting the event and the participants! Marie’s kept us fueled up with delicious food to take on all of our adventures! Our favorite part is learning about and meeting park visitors that continue to do the things they learn with us here at the park and welcome all of the new faces that often become regular participants. WOW is full of stories about participants purchasing their own equipment and teaching others what they’ve learned here as they continue activities learned at these events. We now have several ladies giving back to the event by sharing their time, knowledge and passion as instructors. Thanks for a great weekend…take a look at some of the fun we had! Want to be added to the WOW email list? CONNECTING PEOPLE AND PLACES – This is a story about Mike, Tim, Dave, Steve and Bob. Mike and Dave stopped in last week and were the first visitors to rent winter gear this season. They had a reservation for the Osprey cabin. Rather than trying to fat bike out to it, they decided to rent skishoes given our current snow conditions. They had plans to meet Tim, Steve and Bob at cabin where the five of them planned to get in their “Osprey therapy.” Mike and Dave’s story began in 1973 as that is when they began to ski and bike together. In the late 1970s, Mike and Dave competed in the xc ski race right here at LMSP, which is where they met Bob. The three of them secured 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the xc ski race! Over the years, these five men have spent their time doing things to include bicycling across the countryside and international borders, scuba diving, spelunking caves in the Black Hills, backpacking National Parks, and climbing peaks to include Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier and Mt. Adams. They come from different walks of life but have shared and continue to share their common interest and passion for the outdoors by meeting at LMSP several times a year for their “Osprey therapy.” Whether they choose to xc ski, skishoe, bike, hike, paddle or snowshoe out to it for their stay, they enjoy lounging and going for short hikes during the day. At night, they look to the sky for stars and Northern Lights. They also enjoy their time together for meals and treats, whether it be over Spam and eggs, freeze dried suppers or pecan pie from the local bakery! Thanks to Mike Fogarty for sharing their story as well as the images with us surrounding their placing at the xc ski race in the late 1970s and their most recent adventure to the Osprey cabin. Join us in celebrating their long-time friendships, their love of the outdoors and to their connection to this place – Lake Metigoshe State Park! Here’s to many more adventures together with us at LMSP. . . . . . #lakemetigoshestatepark #ndstateparks #ndparks #lakemetigoshe

FALL FOLIAGE - The days are getting shorter and chlorophyll production has slowed - chlorophyll is what makes plants and leaves green. That being said, the colors that are usually masked by chlorophyll are starting to appear. They’ve been there the whole time, but make their presence known this time of year and it’s beautiful. The park is reporting about 80% of its leaves have changed to its neon greens, crimson reds, golds, browns and orange hues. This week brought a lot of color changes along the trails and shorelines. The reds from the dogwood, nannyberry, chokecherry, highbush cranberry and poison ivy pop against the neon and gold colored beaked hazel, quaking aspens, birch, cottonwoods, green ash and American elms. The oak trees have dropped most of their acorns and are showing golds and browns. The sarsaparilla on the forest floor is dying off for the season and many of the leaves on the trees that changed early are falling fast. The nannyberries are now ripe, chokecherries are starting to droop, the orange bittersweet fruits are vibrant and the highbush cranberries are bright red. The rose hips are disappearing. The local wildlife has been busy feasting on the area’s fruits, seeds and nuts. Many of the birds species to include pelicans, red necked grebes, hummingbirds, robins and many waterfowl species are in the process of leaving or have headed south in search of more suitable habitats with the fall season arriving. Make plans to visit us soon to witness the season change before your eyes. This is the week to take it all in! . . . . . #lakemetigoshestatepark #fallfoliage #metigosheletsgo #ndlegendary #ndstateparks #ndparks #bottineau
