Only, that the rock wasn’t a rock at all. It was the remains of an ancient Roman villa. For years, I’d sunbathed, played ball, chatted with friends, fallen in love and swum among the remains of an ancient Roman Villa without giving any thought to it. Imagine that there are the ruins of a tiny fish pool for when the boats couldn’t go out. That’s Italy for you. So much beauty and history crammed everywhere that you end up taking it for granted. Now I’m learning to appreciate it also thanks to you. During the Retreat, we had lunch overlooking the tiny beach and then took a stroll and sunbathed among the remains of the villa. See this rock? It's called Nave di Serapo. It’s called this way because this rock has the shape of a boat. Legend has it that it's Odysseus boat that Circe turned into stone to keep him from leaving. Gaeta is near Circeo which is where this fascinating sorceress from Greek legends lived. Growing up in Gaeta with all these legends for every corner, helped bring places to life to me as a child. Ancient Roman and Greek legends tied up with more modern stories filled up our infancy as we grew up and brought to life what we read at school in history books. The places took up a timelessness with past and present cohabiting in my childish imagination Nowadays, on a nice day, I love swimming to it. Last Friday, 23 February, a group of year 9 and year 10 students from Stretton State College visited ILC for an Immersion experience. They engaged in a session packed with hands-on activities on the topic "IL TEMPO LIBERO" (Leisure time). They learned new expressions such as “NON VEDO L’ORA!" (I can't wait!) and "PORTARE A SPASSO IL CANE” (to walk the dog) and had fun writing FRASI MATTE (Crazy sentences) using the 'sentence builder' strategy. Thanks to a 'running dictation', they also practised their reading, speaking, and writing skills along with their memory. ILC teachers Giovanna and Francesca enjoyed every minute spent with these amazing students who showed enthusiasm and dedication. A special GRAZIE to their teachers, Catherine De Pellegrin and Federica Civiero. Ciao! Monday Mention is here! “Professoressa” Marissa Bognanno is our highlight today. She is the Italian Language Teacher for all three Elementary schools in Portsmouth. Highlight is a great word to describe her! Professoressa Bognanno has been an amazing addition to learning and to the culture of Dondero. Even walking into her classroom you will feel the warm light of her management ☀️Her kindness is felt throughout the school, in her classroom and in the community. She is enthusiastic, engaging and passionate. She strives to reinforce positive recognition of students and makes them feel valued and welcome with her calm demeanor. Not only does she support a language but she makes learning FUN through hands on activities and total immersion of Italian culture. Children come home sharing their learnings and excitement about her teachings. How did we get so lucky to have her AND this opportunity? We received funds from the Italian consulate to add Italian to our school. In year one it was exploratory while in year 2 and 3, classes became a part of the 3-5 UA schedule. Friends of Italian Americans a group in Portsmouth donated $1500 for every 5th grader to receive an Italian book. Ho trovato Italia a Gaeta. Questa è la frase che ha scritto Cecilia alla fine della classe di Art Therapy durante il Retreat che ho organizzato a Settembre. Alla fine della classe, Marta ci ha chiesto di scrivere dietro il disegno una frase che racchiudesse le emozioni di quelle due ore. Oltre a creare bei personalissimi souvenir del proprio viaggio con l' acquerello, le ragazze hanno scritto delle bellissime frasi. Eravamo tutte così ispirate! La frase di Cecilia " Ho trovato Italia a Gaeta" ha un valore molto speciale. Cecilia è argentina, discendente di italiani. Lei è venuta in Italia per ritrovare le sue origini e la sua famiglia. Trovare quel senso di appartenenza era una priorità per le e sono così contenta che il retreat e il suo viaggio, l' abbiano aiutata nel suo percorso. Perché le nostre origini sono importanti. Ci dicono chi siamo. Eccone alcune delle altre bellissime frasi scritte. "Painting on the beach mentre listening to music in Gaeta! C'è paradiso!" Adoro come Nalini ha mischiato le lingue per creare un ricordo ancora più potente. O Lindy: "Gaeta, una cittadina bellissima dove c'è il tempo per assorbire la cultura, la tranquilla, e le viste ma anche un posto per fare le amiche nuove." E Tara, che ha già detto che ritorna a Gaeta: "In solo cinque giorni mi sono innamorata di Gaeta. La cultura, il cibo, le persone, i colori, tutto." Cosa ho scritto io? " Questo è quello che voglio". " It's really hard to decide what I enjoyed the most of the Retreat. But, If I had to pick one thing, I think it would be meal times and the time we spent eating. During these times all of us were together and we were able to have many spontaneous conversations as a larger group and hear different experiences and perspectives from everyone. It gave us an opportunity to learn about each other and talk about ourselves. I found that these were the times we chatted the most, and it gave me the best opportunity to practice my Italian in front of everyone, or most people. We also had so much fun ordering and sharing food, experiencing a wide variety of food and drinks, and of course drinking wine. In these moments I felt like we all opened up and became comfortable with each other. I felt like we had seen so much of the beautiful town and I had also gotten to know my fellow retreat participants so well, so it was perfect to spend the last night doing what Italians do best: Eating, drinking, laughing, and just being together." The May group built an incredible bond in less than 24 hours We were so connected that when we ordered food at restaurants, we all wanted to share with the rest of the group whatever we were eating.
