**paw update - swipe right for photos - warning they get more graphic** A little over one week on palladia and what an unhappy roller coaster that was. Was finally able to pick up some codeine for her and things are much better. I was able to touch and wash around and under her growth again, which is amazing given that she wouldn’t even rest her paw in my hand on Monday evening. Prior to palladia I had all access to her paw, so the medication is doing something that is resulting in elevated pain levels. Again this should be temporary. And I expect everything to improve in the next few weeks. For now I’m sticking to the full pain regimen - assuming I can get her prescription filled locally. I went by Duane Reade to see and they were closed due to a power outage. It’s just been that kind of week. But she’s back to happy AND comfortable, so I’m relieved - even though for a few weeks I’ll have a medication to dispense every four hours 24/7. Cancer man. On oldie but goodie from 2013 long before the shadow of fester paw overhung our lives. Still working on getting her pain under control on days she gets the palladia. She starts out fine but around 6pm things seem deteriorate significantly. Hopefully adding codeine to the mix will allow us to pull back one med a bit AND keep her more comfortable. This should be temporary, that is the expectation. But if you have a dog with squamous cell carcinoma on their paw and are going to try palladia make sure that in addition to RXClay (for upset tummies/diarrhea - that stuff is AMAZING), you also have yunnan biayao (even if you’ve never had bleeding issues - we hadn’t until palladia) and at least a weekend long supply of max dosage for pain (including codeine). It doesn’t matter if the vets don’t think you need it, her vets didn’t think she needed it before we started this med. Since then it’s been a shitshow trying to get a controlled substance that needs a written script. Her regular vet doesn’t carry. Her oncologist was out for the long weekend and was ready to call it in for another vet at his practice to fill, but thought her regular vet was going to be able to fill it. None of this has been to plan. And all of this could have been avoided if the worse case scenario had been what we prepped for. Instead I spent two weeks working to make sure she didn’t get diarrhea. A mission that has resulted in great success. I would have applied the same amount of neurosis to bleeding and pain if I had been remotely warned about those. But I’ll also own this because on Wednesday I should have been saying “give me the codeine!”, but instead was like “well we are only at 300mg 3x a day on gabapentin and still have a lot of room there so we should be good” and not grasping that LuLu’s long game has changed. I don’t intend to ever have that miscalculation happen again. #palladia #cancershouldbeafraidithaslulu

She is happy, though on much more pain medication. I worry about it, in part, because managing her pain and keeping her comfortable has always been the goal. **CANCER UPDATE** As promised. TiNaY bAbY LuLu, 4 months old. Somehow looking mutantly large. Ugh. The past 24 hours to a quick turn from optimistic and hopeful to extremely stressful and depressing. While it’s not impossible that the palladia could start working so quickly, her oncologist thinks it’s more likely her carcinoma has done more damage than what we are able to see. Basically, and I’m going to slaughter this, carcinomas can be erosive and just eat away at what’s in their area (flesh, bone, etc). The change in LuLu’s paw today vs Monday before we started palladia has been dramatic - mainly in that her pain level seems to have shot up and the paw is creating a gory mess (it was never something that bled before). We’re increasing her pain meds for now and because it’s cancer the way thru this is to go thru it and be hopeful that in a month we see some positive changes. I don’t feel like trying this med was the wrong thing given where we were and what we knew. But it’s really stressful to watch, because unlike a lot of dogs with cancer - I can see her tumor, so I see the stuff happening to it and I see how dramatically the pain level has changed given she has to walk on that leg. But it’s all still very early. Her foot started bleeding/oozing about four hours after her second dose on Wednesday. And it just kept oozing, bandaging it didn’t help and seemed to make it worse, but last night, after letting it air overnight without her walking on it - it finally stopped oozing. Of course this morning she got her next dose, but at least I have seen the oozing bloody goo can stop. So hopefully we can at least have a normal Sunday. My apartment looks like the elevator scene from The Shining. I so wish I had my own washer / dryer. I have been dying by cuts and scrapes financially for a while, but I’ve been hemorrhaging trying to absorb the additional costs above her budget. Geriatric arthritic English bulldog with severe environmental allergies and cancer. Hopefully the universe doesn’t add to that list. That being said if you said if you saw her you’d swear she was 5, except this week - she’s moving gingerly right now. Rightfully so. #cancershouldbeafraidithaslulu

**LuLu Cancer Update** I will save what this mornings grody situation for another day, for now I’ll share this… Yesterday was LuLu’s second dose of palladia. About four hours after her dose, her paw started bleeding on the bottom. Only it wasn’t just blood. Sometimes it was like a mixture of blood and fluid, I dub that “blood juice”. So gross, but also - SO GROSS! Her outside toe by her tumor, the primary toe for it IMO, looked REALLY angry and red, but by late afternoon had dialed back its rage and was merely very agitated and a happier pink. Which is good since her oncologist was out for the day (because of course he is! Thanks Murphy’s Law!!) Throughout all of this she remained comfortable, though had a bit more pronounced limp when everything was at its worst mid-morning. That being said by mid-afternoon she was back to nesting and digging with the paw (FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WHY?!!?). I don’t know what to expect and since I haven’t talked with her oncologist I can only guess the following: this is a good sign it’s working. I was told it could take up to four weeks to see results, but there is definitely a visible change after two doses. This has really raised my hopes, I try not to let that happen, but this all just has me feeling very positive. I hope this is working. I hope it’s working so well that we can eventually cut the dose of the palladia AND cull the pain meds she is on (though for now we will be increasing the pain medication). But given how poorly our prior experiences trying to manage this via the Western route went I opt to remain cautiously optimistic until we go in for that one month check up on June 20th and her oncologist gets his eyes on it. A lot can happen between now and then, and if I’ve learned anything over the past 2.5 years it’s that cancer can very quickly go very poorly, even when it was doing so well. And given my morning I feel like we’re walking a razors edge right now. Never underestimate the amount of stress this has brought into my life. Lu? She’s fine. Happy. Roly. Poly. And that’s the goal. But man, not only is this stressful to manage it is now very gory/grody. #cancershouldbeafraidithaslulu

**CANCER UPDATE** LuLu took her first dose of palladia today (don’t worry I don’t touch it with bare hands). I’m very hopeful that it will help, but it’ll likely take 4 to 6 weeks before we can tell. I’m including some shots of her paw. One is from last July - it had almost healed over (I’m sure you can see how bad it was the year before that photo is you search the hashtag #cancershouldbeafraidithaslulu). There’s no bottom shot of her paw because nothing was there. Fast forward to this spring. Right now we have three major issues. The first being that a massive growth showed up on the bottom of her paw - which is problematic because it’s not a spot to mess around and try a debulking surgery. The other issue is the deterioration of the top. We don’t know if it’s being caused by cancer or if it is the long term effects of the short course radiation. Or both. Apparently damage from radiation can take two to five years to show up. If it’s radiation there isn’t much we can do, but if it’s cancer and the palladia works - it could scar over. So now, unbelievably, I’m hoping she has cancer. 🫠 AND that the palladia works (make sure you hear that last part Universe!). The last major issue (at least that I know of) is that after her recent suspicious aspirate I get to have a new really fun fear that the cancer has spread to her lymph nodes and lungs. I’m grateful we have a good candidate to try for her, but am sad because we had been so close. SO. CLOSE. that being said if you saw Lu walking around outside with her paw wrapped you really wouldn’t know anything was wrong, I often feel like people think I’m lying about her paw because she is just such a happy little tank. So her pain is very well managed (it’s priority one of the hierarchy of Lu needs). She remains happy and comfortable and really - and really that is the goal here.
