@harleymedical Consultant Surgeon Mr Pundrique Sharma shared some insights into the difference in the surgery and aftercare when having surgery in the UK compared to places such as Turkey, he comments: “Some of the practices I have seen from patients who’ve been operated on overseas in terms of aftercare, and risks surgeons have taken simply wouldn’t be tolerated by reputable medical providers in the UK, where governance processes and safety mechanisms are frankly some of the most rigorous in the world.” “Another significant issue is the consultation and consent processes. Many of the patients who I have seen who have had surgery abroad are very unhappy with the fact that they did not have adequate (or indeed any) time pre-operatively to talk with their surgeon and develop a doctor patient relationship, which is vital, and were not fully informed of the dangers they faced in having surgery. How can you make an informed decision if you don’t know the risks and alternatives?” Mr Sharma also commented on the rise of correct surgery following ‘botched’ operations abroad stating: ‘’Numbers from any individual surgeons are not as useful as collective numbers – and if we look at those, a study by BAAPS (the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) showed that over a four year period, up to 2021, there were over 300 patients who required corrective procedures after cosmetic surgery complications abroad, with a 44% increase in serious complications in 2021 compared to 2020. After more unnecessary deaths in the media due to complications after undergoing surgery abroad, we have put together this short guide showing the main dangers of post-surgical air travel✈️ 🚫 At The Harley Medical Group, we have strict rules in place around travelling both before and after surgery, to reduce any additional risk to your surgery and recovery.* These include: ✖️ You must not have been on a long haul flight for 2 weeks prior to any procedure (3 weeks for tummy tuck or if you have a history of DVT). ✖️ You can only fly 6 weeks after surgery, once you have had surgeon sign-off ✖️ Very short haul flights (less than an hour) are allowed after 2 weeks following check ups beforehand ✖️ We advise to leave it longer for extremely long haul flights such as UK to Australia All of this is to protect our patients, and the risks don't end there. We would always encourage you to have in-person check-ups after surgery, however flying home in between is very risky so make sure to do your research and never feel pressured into making a decision.
